OVERALL RATING: 5/10

Spy vs. Spy is one of those classics I played as a kid, but had completely forgotten as an adult.  My low rating however, is simply due to the ethics of mathematics and I was actually more inclined to rate it a 6/10.  This game is simple in nature and yet it's charm is unmatched by many of its competitors.  It's no wonder, to me at least, that this game was actually released through more than half a dozen systems before it came out on the NES.  It's value is simply improved by having a partner to play it with, but I could undoubtedly play this for a good hour before getting bored of matching the computer.  While I realize an hour might not seem like a long time to keep someone's interest, that hour isn't one I would regret, placing it above many games in the same 'hour- life' category.

In Spy vs. Spy, you play an agent crow whose goal is to collect four items, avoid or defeat an opponent agent, and then be the first one out a specially marked door.  (In training mode, you only need two items.)  However, there's a definitely a little more strategy to the game, which I discuss under the difficulty category.  The strategy that must be employed to win is the alluring factor to the game.  The fact that there are only eight levels, on the other hand, is disappointing.  If there were more levels, I could easily play Spy vs. Spy for more than an hour.

GRAPHICS: 5/10
The graphics are really not that impressive, but then again, they don't need to be.  The garishly drawn crows are hardly recognizable as such, but their humorously shaped heads make up for that fact.  The actual rooms and furniture are reminiscent of the basic 3-D point- perspective drawings I was forced to draw in CAD programs way back in high school.  They're not very detailed, but they give the player a good sense of 'front' and 'back', while offering depth to any motion as you search the rooms.

That being said, there aren't very many colors in the game, and what colors do exist aren't very vivid.  Each room has its own color scheme like green, pink, white, and yellow.  The walls will be a dark shade of the color, and the floor will be a lighter, checkered pattern of the same color and white.  Most rooms, unfortunately, also happen to be pastel in nature which isn't very appealing in a game like this.  There were a few rooms that broke this pattern (olive green or deep purple for example), but there certainly weren't enough of them.  The furniture and doors, on the other hand, are always the same reddish brown color.  The spies where a black or white suit, and their beaks are orange.  Items you pick up are gray, black, or white.  This sums up all colors used in the game.

Unlike the character sprites, most things in the game are recognizable.  You have access to a number of booby traps (a bomb, a spring, a bucket of water, and a timed bomb) and remedies for the booby traps (umbrellas, pliers, and buckets of water).  Each is non-disputable, along with the items you must collect.  The only thing I had difficulty discerning was the symbol on the exit door, which isn't important anyways.  I only -just- now recognized it was an airplane as I was sitting here looking at it and typing my review!

There's also a little cut-scene at the end of each level which never differs.  The winning spy gloats and his head bobs as he laughs.  He's chased off the airfield by the losing spy and after a roar fills your ears, the winning spy moves back across the screen in an airplane taking flight.  The losing spy then becomes so angry that he explodes and floats up to heaven.  It's not an impressive scene, but at least it's not so horribly long that it detracts from game play.

SOUND: 3/10
Strangely, I seem to find the sound in most games I review to be highly irritating.  This game doesn't escape that stereotype. There's not much to hear, and I can easily sum up each sound in the game:

There's the game music.  It's the same across all eight levels and only breaks when you arrive at the cut-scene.  The music is of poor quality, but it's implicative of older systems. In this game it simply does not have much appeal and almost seems out of place since similar music is usually used in rpg's (at least, from my experience).

The crow's laugh is the most annoying sound in the game.  Whenever a crow sets a time bomb or senses that the opponent fell into a trap, the crow gives a jilting laugh of amusement.  This precious little noise sounds too much like someone holding a key stuck on the keyboard, or rapidly scrolling text.  I have no idea why the designers of this game couldn't pick a sound that at least resembled a chuckle in -some- way.  The crow's laugh is also there in the cut-scene, along with the roaring sound of a plane.  However, until the player sees the plane on the screen, they're unlikely to think 'plane' when they hear the dull static filling their ears.  The noise of a dying crow flying to heaven sounds more like a flying vehicle at least, reminding one of cheap helicopter propellers.

Finally, there's the sound of fighting and of taking/ placing objects, both actions taken by pressing a button.  Taking or placing objects is nothing worth noting and are simply accompanied by a little musical tick of sound.  However, the combat noises are a little more amusing.  It sounds as though the game designers took the noise of a thousand Mario's jumping and then overlapped that little sound effect.

In short, none of the sounds in this game match the action they belong to.  It's sort of like a child had fun at a sound board and found the mismatches to be humorous.

ADDICTIVENESS: 6/10
This game would have been rated higher if there were more levels.  Like most games that seem to capture my attention though, it has very few levels.  In fact, it has eight.  However, most games in which you battle, declare a winner, and battle again... well they just have the tendency to get redundant by their very nature.

I love that each level had larger and larger maps, sometimes even including a second floor.  It only makes me want to keep playing though, because I love games in which I get the chance to explore large areas.  Since there -aren't- more levels, the saving factor is the ability to play with a friend.  It's true that you can play with a computer, but the computer tends to be a bit predictable and so a human counterpart offers a vast array of new strategies.  Thus, if I was playing this game with a friend, I can imagine being addicted to it for however long it took my opponent to become calculable.

STORY: 2/10
Okay, so there's not much story to this game.  You play a spy..... placed against another spy.  The spies just happen to be crows.  The location just happens to be some random building.  And you're always looking for the same four items.  You can kill the other spy (who doesn't love some spy action?) and set booby traps to foil his plans.  And then you get to gloat when you succeed.

This category simply gets a 2 for the simple fact that the spies are crows that appear to be all suit and beak.

DEPTH: 5/10
Did I mention how this game only has eight levels?  This is probably the largest disappointment in the game.

However, there's a plethora of people to play against, which changes game play each time, so it has some decent replay value, which is why I rate this a 5/10.

DIFFICULTY: 6/10
While the actual game actions in and of themselves are not complicated, there is some strategy needed to be successful and that need only grows as the maps become larger.  This is perhaps the most fun part of the game and compensates for the areas in which the game lacks.

In the game, you must collect four items to leave the building.  Unfortunately, these items are in pre-determined locations, so once you've played a round once, there's little challenge if you're quick enough to retrieve them before the enemy.  Fortunately, the enemy can pick the items up and move them, which he sometimes does.  That way, retrieving items can become a little more difficult than rote memorization allows.  There's a good chance you yourself will move items around because until you find the suitcase, you can only carry one item at a time.  Thus, if you find two items before the suitcase, you'll have to set one down and come back for it later.  In the meantime, the opponent crow can take the item from your hiding place.

You can also set traps, as can the opposing spies.  You are limited to the number of traps you can set and they can be placed in furniture, in rooms, and above doors.  If you happen to fall victim to a trap set (even if it was one YOU set for the opponent!), you are frozen from playing for 5 seconds, and 30 seconds gets subtracted from your clock.  This means that each player can easily have a different deadline time to find the items before losing the game.  You can use remedies to avoid traps or defuse them, but if you haven't found the suitcase yet, you can only carry one item at a time.  This also requires that you've watched the opponent on the other half of the screen, and that you remember where they've been and where they've set traps.  Therefore, I can hardly argue that remedies are worth picking up. Luckily, you can access a map which tells you which rooms have traps, but there are three cons to using this method:  1.  The enemy is still moving about and playing as you read the map.  2. The color code simply tells you that a trap is in that room, but not what -kind- of trap is there.  3. If there is an item in the room, you won't be able to see it because the trap hides it.

There's also the aspect of battle.  If you happen to cross paths with the opposing player, you must battle it out until one crow dies.  If neither of you are carrying a weapon, the winner is the player who mashes the attack button faster. However, there are two weapons hidden in each map: one for each spy.  A bat doubles the damage you deal, while a dagger triples the damage you deal.  However, if you find the dagger and then find the bat, you lose the dagger.  If you keep an eye on your opponent in the split screen and you notice that he /she has picked up a weapon, you probably want to avoid them like the plague.  It's practically impossible to win a battle in which your opponent is better equipped and this means an almost certain loss in your time clock.

Finally, for the larger maps, keeping track of the exit door can be difficult.  Thus, if you find all the items and are ready to leave, you've got to remember where the door is and reach it before the enemy finds you and kills you.  If your enemy kills you or you hit a booby trap, you lose all four items and have to start all over again.

In conclusion, despite the lower -individual- ratings, I honestly feel this is a game worth trying at least once.  It's fun with a computer opponent, but it's even more fun with a human player to try your wits against.  This most likely wouldn't be your favorite game, but it's a good way to waste a bit of time with a friend, and it's fun to foil your enemy's frantic efforts.

Seishiro Leonhart :   Aww thanks! I saw it was the game of the day this morning and I was all "O.o What are the chances of that?!?!"  LOL

Totally awesome!

Anyways, I'm so glad you liked the review!  And yes, they are supposed to be crows. hehe.  It actually came out through many systems, and some of them were a little more clear on that fact. However, I never would have guessed it myself. haha.

Singelli : It's not a problem, I saw this game as game of the day I was like "Oh man! I remember that game! That game was good!", but because I was curious of the history of the spies, I read your review, and your review caught my attention and I searched the web for the history of the Spy vs. Spy series.

While checking the unofficial site, there was a few cartoons made by the creator of the Spy vs. Spy series, which showed a spy without the round hat, and looking at the back of their heads really makes them look like crows.

Anyways, review on! Your reviews are perfect!

If I knew how to make one, I would give you an Epic Face Seal of Approval!

I just tried to play the game, but the game crashes, I'm going to summon tRIUNE and ask him to fix the game.

tRIUNE : Could you please fix the game? When you press to exit the title screen and go to the game configuration screen the game crashes.

Seishiro Leonhart :   Huh... I wonder how come I never found the unofficial site.  That's odd.  Were the cartoons any decent?    I wouldn't mind taking a peek at them.

and thanks for the compliment.  ^.^

I didn't have any problems when I played it here on vizzed. Did you try a different emulator maybe?

Singelli : Here is the site if you want to check it out: http://www.spyvsspyhq.com/images.html
It is on the images category.

And the image that mostly made me really think of the spies really being crows was the Bob Clarke #309 image, at the 3rd scene when the white spy is on the chair with a book on his hands and the ball comes from the window as he looks at it sideways with an afraid expression, not only showing they really are crows, but with a cute expression (That face from the white spy was cute ).

Oh those are pretty cute!  It's kind of a wonder to me that someone liked the game THAT much, that they made all those comics for it.  LOL

Though they still really don't look like crows. XD

No, the spy vs. spy series was created at year 1960, the series continues until today and there is no sight of it coming to an end soon, except if the cartoonist die and there is no sucessor.

The game was produced due to the sucess they were having (and still have!) on the series, not that the cartoons were produced after the game.

They may not look like crows, but they still have a bird like head, to find out if they are birds or not, only with research LOL!

Seishiro Leonhart :  Oooh I see.  Wow!  I guess if I simply do research on the game itself, I'm missing out on a lot of fun facts!  Next time I won't limit my searches so much, as that was definitely worth mentioning in my review!  Thanks so much!

I found it funny reading the review that singelli didn't realize this was taken from Mad comics characters. In that regard, I find this game to be humorous. Even if to just play 2 players against someone. The experience is less fun single player. I would give this game a 7.5 fun but gets repetitive quickly
