MegamanX 2-3 for S.N.E.S.

Strider 1 and 2 for Arcade Mames first and other Systems Second or Third.

Ninja Gaiden 1-3 for S.N.E.S. and Ninja Gaiden 1 for N.E.S. to try out first (See if you like the game. It is cheaper in vizz.)

I see Contra and there are a ton of them for many systems in this site.
Super C-N.E.S., Super Contra 3-S.N.E.S., Hard Corps-Genisis.

Aliens for the Arcade Mame is good if you want to Shoot-Em-Up. (Less Platforming and more side scrolling.)

I love RPGs, with my top 5 being:
1. MOTHER 3
2. Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu no Hanayome (Hand of the Heavenly Bride)
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Sweet Home
 I highly recommend you try any of these, and also try others in the series mentioned (Especially MOTHER and Dragon Quest, and also Sweet Home is a stand-alone title).

Metroid. Metroid is amazing. It's about a female bounty hunter. She was raised and trained by a now extinct race called the Chozo. Before they were destroyed they gave her the highest tech armor they had made. And that's where her story begins. You are mainly trying to stop the force who destroyed the Chozo. This series is mainly platform shooter/adventure, but the newer games now consist of first person with the newest being 3rd person. Run around shooting enemy's, defeating bosses, and collecting items to upgrade your suit. I suggest Metroid: Zero Mission to start off with

Try some Fire Emblem they even have some hacks that translate them to English.
The Legend of Zelda series is a really fun game as well filled with puzzles.
Pokemon is a really great series as well really fun and addicting.
