Earthbound... where do I begin. This game has put me at a loss for words every since I was a child, from its modern feel to its classic music. You begin the game as a young boy named Ness, whom lives in a seemingly peaceful town called Onett. Then suddenly, one fateful day, everything changes. A meteorite from an unknown origin crash lands in the outskirts of your neighborhood, and an unsettling truth begins to unfold, as Ness comes to realize his true potential. This game puts a modern-day spin on the old-school RPG mechanics, giving the player more attachment to the protagonists as they venture into situations and settings that relate to our generation. Although Earthbound never received much acknowledgement due to poor advertising in America, it has quickly become known all over the world as one of the most masterfully-created RPGs of all time.

I will rarely ever give a perfect rating to a game, and it isn't just because Earthbound is my favorite; it is my favorite for a reason. From the sarcastic humor to the insanely creative and metaphorical enemies you will encounter, this game will keep you interested. Not only that, but the amazing storyline and playability add the icing to an already delicious cake. Call your parents when you get homesick, smash up some hippies with a baseball-bat, visit the dinosaur museum in the big city, or just enjoy riding your bike on the beach. Not to mention, the interactive ending was one of the first ever implemented into a game of its genre. Earthbound has something for everyone, and doesn't fail to deliver satisfaction- even over a decade later.

The characters are easily maneuverable, and the battle system is simple enough, but it just feels too simple for the uniqueness of this game. The game can lag in some areas, causing motion to be slow, and the same problem can occur when there are too many possible enemy encounters on the screen at once. There is also the age-old problem with this style of game where the NPCs move in random paths, and you find yourself unable to walk through them. You literally have to stand and wait for them to move out of your way so that you can continue in the direction you were going. There are a lot of items with many different uses; too many for such limited inventory space, and the items do not stack. You will have to navigate your status menus constantly to get all the functionality from item usage and exploring. Though all of these things can cause an annoyance, it is minor compared to the depth and the amount of enjoyment that can be obtained from playing.

The graphic styles are a bit too pixellated for a two-dimensional game, and the sprites often have too much detail where it just simply can't fit on the graphic. However, the objects and scenery are decently rendered with a bit of a cartoon feel, which fit the mood of the game nicely. The artwork for the enemies while in battle sequence are very creative and for the most part appealing to the eye, not to mention the final boss (which I won't ruin for you, but let's just say if you do the research, it is one of the most horrifying bosses ever implemented into a game).

Sound: 9/10

The sound effects fit the style of gameplay perfectly, and the music is breath-taking even today. Itoi (the creator) was able to capture the essence of each area of the game beautifully, and without the music, Earthbound just wouldn't be the same. It has a great amount of emotion, which compliments the situations in the game remarkably, and gives the player a heightened sense of immersed play. My only issue with the sound is that the quality in rare cases can be poor, and it just doesn't seem on par with its orchestration, but it is still unforgettable. After you finish Earthbound, I could almost guarantee you will be humming the tunes to yourself and listening to them over again for a long time to come.

Even with the minor defects in Earthbound, it is still just too amazing to complain. When you combine all of the elements that it has to offer, you get a masterfully blended combination of classic RPG elements with a fresh and unique overlay. One cannot help but get swept away by the storyline and detailed personalities of all the bizarre yet familiar characters they will encounter. Without a doubt, whether you are an RPG fanatic like me or not, you will get enjoyment from this game. It is a must-play for gamers of all audiences, and I highly recommend it to anyone up for a challenging and gratifying adventure.
