Sonic 3D Blast Review

Time for my review of Sonic 3D Blast (also known in Europe as Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island) for the Sega Genesis. For some background, this game was released in 1996 and was developed by Sonic Team and Traveler’s Tales. My opinion of this game, unlike previous entries, is not high. In fact, this game is a mediocre Sonic title at best. The following review should help explain why.

The graphics score a 10 because they make up one of the few positives that this game has. There’s just something about seeing 2.5 dimensional waterfalls and isometric cliffs that makes me smile for some reason. Sonic, the robots, and the Flickies look okay, but Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik just do not look right. All things considered though, the graphics are certainly the high point of this game.

I really can’t do a full review of this game without talking about the controls. They’re just that irritating! First of all, the game is set on an isometric plane, so the game’s controls are angled diagonally. What that means is that not only would jumping be very awkward for the player, but when you would spin dash, you would bounce around all over the place in a manner reminiscent of Sonic Labyrinth. The scheme really comes back to haunt the player when they’re trying to collect Flickies. This is mainly why difficulty gets an 8.

Sound gets a 9 because it’s so plentiful and lively. The ring, jump, and spin dash sounds are all there. The reason why the score that I gave this category is so high is found in the quality of the music. The music in this game is so good that it is often taken and remixed for inclusion in later Sonic games. Examples of this can be found in Sonic Adventure as well as Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

The game’s depth and addictiveness score a 3 and 4, respectively. I put both categories in this paragraph because they kind of tie into each other. In other words, if a game lacks depth, I am less likely to play it again. Anyway, other than completing the main game and collecting the Chaos Emeralds, there is really not much else to do in this game. Considering this game’s terrible controls, there is no real reason to come back to this game in the interest of improving your score.

All and all, this game is a rare moment of mediocrity at the end of what is remembered as the golden age of Sonic the Hedgehog. Would I play this game again? Occasionally, I would if only to listen to the awesome music.  Well…that’s all I have for you I guess. Until the next post /review.

A very fair review that reflect my own general feelings about Sonic 3D Blast on Sega Genesis. I had recently beat this game earlier in the year when I revived my old Sega Genesis, and I was surprised by how disappointed I was in the game. When I first got it and was younger, I could not figure out the game very well, but as an adult, I figured just how easy and... lame this game was.

The controls really ruined a lot of the fun, especially when you get to one of those one-way points and have to travel all the way around once again. Those special stages were also rather lackluster; an easy concept, horrible perspective, and not a fun thing like the past special stages. I know you rated the difficulty as an 8, but I disagree there; the controls really do not make the difficulty as you can get so many 1 ups, it is ridiculous. And this is on the Sega Genesis, where there are no save states.

Other than the difficulty rating, you really are spot on about this game. Well done!

Sonic 3d blast started the whole 3d movement I believe because the 2d era was a little under rated with some of their games but my review is goanna be a long 1 so please try the game out it is an epic platform game that started off an era of new technology it is mother of 3d gaming I believe in my mind best platform game somebody could ask for exactly how they should of started the era with a big boom in newer graphics design and even the best technology known for anything and man possible most precise word would be an epic story line for the past system Sega for sure 1 the best all except the rivalry between the blue blur and also Mario because they were what started 90's Gen of systems with the long rivalry between those 2 I liked both of them equally but most of the time the blue blur was better design in games like sonic 3d blast they had him look like an epic 3d character before Mario even turned remotely 3d and when he did they thought wait a minute they did it earlier for sonic than us doing I have some good history with the sonic games and any gamer would say please give me a newer and better game than the 2d series of genres so the game world mad an epic exchange of game details and had them make the blue blur in 3d so no body would get bored any more from the 2d genre and they said how amazing did the maker do that now we dwell on the newer 3d games like nothing happened with the older games and said hi and bye to a generation of gaming because that generation got old they said they wanted to test out genesis ps2 ps3 pox and also the big names of industry that u cannot find because they are outdated by game makers like Sony Microsoft and also Atari were big brand names and now they only have Microsoft Sony and Nintendo all big parts of the industry of business just to get rid of beloved games like the old ones I am used to because they defined an era of video games for sure more than what new systems do for us they did not define history at all they are cool and all that but sonic 3d blast defined history with our defining 3d graphics and also more better and sharper concept of having it for era of many more years of our long life history lesson of stuff to come halo defined and era by it realistic 3d shooter and sharp graphics and after it was the series like many games we live on making more of those games for people to beat play more and more of the realistic graphic games and u will too define history of our gaming industry and we all can define the most history by typing many words I can type a lot on this 1 review because it is a topic I like talking about the whole realistic views of 1 game and I like saying this in posts what seems to be a bad game is actually a good game because u can play hours of a game that u said looked terrible but it gets addicting in the end and it is a good sign u like it more than Ur life at school home and or even work but my chatter always makes me wonder what is the next post to attack with our genre of good game review my review is always the same let all games be treated as equals because u do not know what those scrooges can do to u because they are not real good men to go at throat for throat I am always the 1 to say hey they are all epic games that defined a part of history for sure they all did and will another time in life where they will make them over and over again just to get them look more better than before and that is what they did with our blue blur in recent time Mario still looks the same in it history and it is not good at all just let us move in a map looking amused for every time u play
