If you dont have what it takes, I recomend you not to do this, but I always tell the young junkies off and all I have gotten so far is only verbal abuse. The old drunks who ask nicely I might even give some especialy if they they stop the sobstory right then and there. And yeah,I have been there and know all the tricks. I dont care if they spent it on beer. I wont be intimitated but I will always have a soft spot for the ones that do it right in my eyes.

Honestly? I don't stop or offer to help them. In the area where I live, the homeless people are homeless because they are drunks or refuse to follow the rules of the safe houses-there's plenty of room for them, but they can't or won't stay sober, stay off drugs, or attend the numerous classes that would help them. I don't mean to sound mean or rude, but if they won't help themselves with any of the programs that we've set up to help them with, why should I give them change so they can go buy some more beer.

And don't tell me things like, oh, drunks can't help themselves.... alcoholism runs in my family and we all beat it. And I tell you what, we did not do it with the free help they are being offered. Nor did we get free clothes, free food, a free place to stay, help finding and keeping a job, food stamps and all the other free programs they are being offered.

I know it's not the same way in every place-I know there are homeless people in other places who genuinely do not have access to the help that they need, so my response would probably be much different in places like that. But around here, that's how it is.

thudricdholee :

In my neighbourhood its not the old alcoholics who are the problem. People think they have been there forever. Its the drug addicts. They are usually young, aggressive and get anywhere they see a door open. To give some old bum a bit for a beer aint really that much of a sin I think?

(Sandwich post, sorry) You wouldn't think so, but yeah. See, we don't really have the drug problem around here you guys do. But even if we did...as I said before, they have every opportunity open to them. If they can't or won't take them, why should I give them my hard-earned money so they can drink themselves to death? Then they end up in the hospital getting free care and being taken care of, when I, who work a full time job, can not afford to have any of the medical procedures done that I desperately need.

There are many homeless just sitting around the town center of Glasgow, it's a shame I couldn't do anything in fear of getting my hand chewed off.

Even if there was the possibility that wouldn't happen, I would at least spare them some change, even though most of them would probably just spent it on drugs, but they still got SOME use out of it? Who knows, they might not even be USING the money for drugs and might be spending it on food or water/other beverages or maybe even saving up for one of those houses the homeless people are actually allowed to go into and are free of charge.

I'd go for the 2nd option.

thudricdholee :

Yes! That is what you do as a kind person. Dosent that bible quote hint to that way? The one who do get better do so, the ones who dont they wont but thats why we share some kindness. Eh?

And as a former homeless I know better than going to those places where you can get stabbed and robbed at night.

As for medical care. You never ever get what you need unless you can afford private medical care. Dosent matter if you are on the street or if you are a working class.

Brigand : So..you're telling me that as a kind person I should enable their drinking problem? How is that kind? By not giving them the money, I am helping them to sober up...which might make them more willing to go into treatment or get the help they need. Giving them money that they spend on booze just keeps them drinking!

I'm not talking about homeless people who are homeless through circumstances that are not their fault. As I stated before, our city has excellent homeless shelters and programs to get people off the street and help them to get on their feet and be self-supporting. We spend a lot of money on it, actually. So they don't have anyone to blame but themselves. It's different in other places, I know that. I give to the Salvation Army and other charities who help homeless people and I volunteer at the Food Bank too, so i know the homeless people who just need a helping hand.

We don't have many homeless people out here but I usually look the other way when I see them. I do feel bad seeing them but considering how poor I am, I just can't spare any money to help.

Honestly I do so much charity work where I live that when I do meet a new homless guy I probably already know him or one of his buddies has told him about me.

thudricdholee : Drunks are going to drink themselves to death no matter what you do or don't do. It is a realization I have had to come to myself recently as I watched one of my friends continually kill himself with alcohol. there just isn't anything I could do. The decision to live is his and his alone.

As for the topic on hand: I treat them with respect, strike up a conversation, ask them how they are doing, give them some good words, give them some HOPE. Treat them with dignity, kindness and love (IF they deserve it). I know the local homeless pretty well and I know when they are going to spend on alcohol. If I know they are going to take the money I give them and drink I won't give it to them but I know some of the locals well enough that on another day I could give the same person enough for a bottle and he would go get cigarettes with that money (which in my eyes is acceptable because if you have ever been homeless you'll know how much stress the situation puts on you). I have even invited a few into my own home after I managed to pull myself out of the gutter. I genuinely want to see these people better themselves and it hurts when you befriend one that just won't or can't or whatever.

My girl has never been homeless so she doesn't see things the same way I do and it is a daily wake up to me when I remember that the demographics of urban and suburban West Virginia change drastically, I can only imagine some places like NYC, Chicago, Utah, LA.

To all you people who said they would just ignore them or not even look at them: you know something? That is harsh, mean spirited and hateful. You don't turn down someone because they look scruffy and they're clothes are torn. Or maybe because their hair is a mess and their personal cloud of odor around them is offensive. They are HUMANS too. Some humans who with a little help wouldn't be in the situation, Some people that might find a reason to give up drugs in return for a real friend. I'm not advocating for every living homeless I understand that some are violent, are on the National Sex Offender Registry, are on drugs, are alcoholics. So what? I got a good friend of mine that is a pill-head that is in prison for defending himself cause he got jumped by a gang that tried to steal his personal, legit prescriptions. when he gets out he will be homeless... again, for something that really wasn't all his fault.

All I am saying is you can't judge people by the way they look, smell, by what they wear, etc. some of the most influential people in my life have been homeless and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be alive right now. I most definitely wouldn't be engaged. I seriously wouldn't have my own house. Get to know someone before you judge them (unless they are chasing you... obviously if someone is chasing you then they are probably not the kind of person you want to make friends with... sit in at the soup kitchen and just watch... you'll know who the safe people are after a few visits).

Final words: Don't ever, EVER think that this can't happen to you. In today's economy most people are only one paycheck away from losing everything and it isn't getting better for the working class any time soon. If you find yourself homeless and don't know what to do find a shelter, a library and the local branch of the Department of Health and Human Resources (Welfare Office). Then PM me from the library. I hope it never happens to any one of you Vizzers, but it can and if it does remember that there are people that have been there before that can help...

I'm going to stop rambling here. PM me for more on this topic or any questions about me or anything I wrote about.

A lot of people fake it near me. They stand in front of Walgreen's or the shady building next to a mall near me in really nice clothes. Sometimes this one lady stands in front of said buidling saying she is a grandma saying she needs at least $75. I'm thinking it's something to do with drugs. I've seen real homeless people behind the second Walgreen's, but never the one that I go to.

I only ever have once, that I know of, and I suppose he could have had a home and just been begging on the street anyway, but I gave him some spare change. I don't know, I didn't really think much about it at the time, nor have I thought much about it since.

I usually try not to acknowledge them. Unless, of course, the hobo is riding an unicycle or something. Then I hand him all of my money.

I shrug em off in one way or another or I just ignore them. I know it's mean but every time I've seen homeless people they're bugging me while I'm in the middle of getting to my next class, I don't want to be late for my lecture and have "talking to / giving money to a homeless person" be my excuse, no teacher I know will accept that.

Still, sometimes there's homeless people where I live that are pretty awesome. One of them tells you these awesome stories of stupid things he's done in his life if you give him spare change. There's also this other one that learned to play the flute when he was younger, someone out of a band club in our university gave him a flute and another guy got a new jukebox so he gave the guy his old one. Now that guy occasionally appears and plays awesome songs accompanied by his rather impressive flute playing to make some quite nifty tunes while you pass by. If I have spare change that day I always throw it into his hat because man can that guy play!

I just walk away. In this neighborhood you can't really trust people lurking around the streets. Many of them use people's pity on them as their modus operandi to make horrible crimes like theft and rape. I'd just rather put some of my money in a donation box or if I have some food, then I'll just give it to those homeless dogs and cats instead.

In New York, I just try and move to the other side of the sidewalk so I act like I don't notice them.... I know it's probably not the best idea, but in all honesty when I see one is smoking or buying liquor, I almost want to spit in their faces and push them aside. I hate to see people who are poor or complain about not having enough money, but then screw them if they are spending money they could use to actually get more than a Big Mac right around the block. Even people who have spending problems I can't help but laugh. It is nobody's fault but your own, unlike the few homeless folk who maybe got laid off or lost their house because of mother nature

Since I've been homeless before I know all about the delights of starving and watching people blankly ignore you whilst eating junk food. Heck it's not nice when people look at you like you are dirt and with such contempt..

I know that they probably are scared by the fact that I look disgusting and that I have long hair and a beard... but to show such hatred to another human when you know nothing about their life is disgusting..

Of course. I wasn't homeless due to Drugs or Alcohol.. It was due to the fact that I had no choice...

If I can be honest.. It was more embarrassing for me watching people that I knew or had seen before in town change their impression towards me...  The thought still leaves me sick..

And what do you get for sitting in the cold trying to be friendly to people.... I got about $1 and utter resentment for how selfish and horrible people can be.

I spent most of that time eating bread from the bin of a bakery.... It may have been disgusting... but it kept me alive and that's all that matters...

So when I see other homeless people I help them out.. I would advise to give them food instead of money... It's safer that way for you and them... Plus I'd recommend not giving money to anyone that smells of alcohol.. Or is drunk....  These people are unpredictable and are only worsening their situation by getting drunk or taking drugs...

It may not seem like it but the smallest thing can make a whole lot of difference.. Someone gave me $10 once and I was so grateful that I offered to help them in whatever way I could.. Just to have that feeling that I earned that money.. The person just said "Enjoy it, and try not to look so depressed"..

Sorry this turned into a rant... it just brings back memories that's all.

I can sympathize with them, as I too have been homeless before. Being homeless doesn't mean they're lazy or an addict that blew it all. If I can, I help them. I could try to fancy myself sharp enough to know if they were legit or not, but nobody can be sure. If I can't help, I'm ashamed to admit, I ignore them.

Most of the time keep going. That person probably deserved it by not using his time and money wisely.
I don't see many homeless people, but sometimes I might give him something.

There most likely is a job for them out there whether its working at a five star restaurant or working at a toxic waste dump. (I couldn't think of anything better to use for that last part)
