America the land of freedom, opportunity, and diversity. Or so we thought. A lot of people always say that America is the greatest country in the world. In recent years it doesn't seem that way. Here are a couple of reasons on why America is not the greatest country in the world.

Race: America is a melting pot yet many of its problems are mostly race related. America has always had an ugly history with race relations. It is either we sugarcoat it or don't mention it at all. Even after World War 2 it took many years for African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans to get the same rights and same equal treatment as White Americans. Though the Civil Rights Movement was a success we still haven't gotten over our racial differences. Not to mention the genocide of Native Indigenous Americans.

Economics: America has good prices for nearly everything, but goods and services
are usually of low quality. Think of the great number Americans who
receive a free "cell phone" for signing up for a mobile plan. But, then
the "phone" doesn't receive service everywhere it is supposed to or you
drop the thing once and it doesn't work anymore. Is it really a cell
phone then? No, it's just a piece of junk from Korea that's an illusion
of a cell phone. But hey, at least you got it for free. Another problem with economy is the whole consumerist agenda that is forced on us everyday in commercials. We always preach charity but at the same time practice materialism.

The Environment and Energy: America is one of the leading energy consumers in the world.  The United States, with less than 5 % of the global population, uses
about a quarter of the world’s fossil fuel resources—burning up nearly
25 % of the coal, 26 % of the oil, and 27 % of the world’s natural gas. Along with the population boom is it even possible to support it? Most of the wars we have today like Afghanistan or Iraq are do to the fact that those countries have resources we need. The problem is if we are not careful going after these resources well end up having environmental disasters like the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf.

Health: America is the obesity capital of the world. Also the fast food capital of the world. You can't go anywhere in America without see a McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, or etc. An estimated 65 % of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, leading to an
annual loss of 300,000 lives and at least $117 billion in health care
costs in 1999.

Religion: America is not a Christian country despite the popular belief by Evangelicals. It may have some Christian elements but many of these things America has done are not Christian in nature. The Pilgrims came here to practice their faith freely but ended up making the same mistakes as the people they left behind. There is also Separation of Church and State which means  Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The problems now theses days people like Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman are trying to turn this country into a theocracy.

Sex: With the Battle over Contraception its clear that Sex is still a big issue in America. What I don't get is Sexual content is prohibited or frowned upon, but violence is especially glorified. If a kid reads a Playboy or Hustler magazine he/she should be punish but if a child is given a gun then we congratulate them?

Censorship- If there is one thing I hate it is censorship. America is the godfather of censorship, I mean look at the FCC or conservative groups like the PTA.

The clash between the Liberal Left and Conservative Right: If there is one thing tearing apart America its the never ending war between Liberals and Conservatives. Whether its on CNN or Fox News Network there always has to be the whole "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" mentality.

War and Terrorism: When something like 9/11 happens to us we always say "Never Again". But when we do the same to people in other countries in war because of our need to bring "Democracy" are we know better than the terrorist we fight against? We nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, We support apartheid between Israel and Palestine, We killed civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan with drones, and support dictators like Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, Hosni El Sayed Mubarak, and Hugo Chavez. We at one point support Osama Bin Laden and future members of Al Qaeda against the Soviets.

So those are some reason to which why America is not the greatest country in the world.

You are wrong on many points.  Allow me to counter:

1.  Race - Name me a country with diverse cultural nations and show me where they succeeded.  Yugoslavia is gone.  Czechoslovakia is gone.  Countries in Africa redraw lines all the time over 1,000s of dead people.  We haven't had a race war the way most other countries with multi-ethnic groups have.  I'd say we're doing the best with race relations.

2.  Isn't it nice you have a cell phone?  Think of all the countries that don't have the technology available.  You complain about it but here you are, typing away on a computer and posting to people who are American and can read this.  We have first-down technology in football.  England doesn't have it for their soccer leagues.  All the best doctors in the world come here to train.  All the best athletes come here to train (look at the Olympics).  We are sending back pictures FROM MARS!  If that's not good technology, I don't know what is.

We also have economic freedom.  I get taxed less and I can make decisions on how to spend my money.  If I don't want garbage, I buy a nicer, more expensive phone.  Same with cars, houses, computers, clothes, everything.  We get options.  That's the true definition of wealth.  The options.

3.  "One of the leading consumers"  You don't mention how much China uses.  Anyway, the fact that we use energy shows our high quality of life.  I can jump in a car and drive somewhere, or get on a bus and go somewhere.  I have freedom of movement.  I'm not stuck in one place my entire life.  Energy consumption shows a high quality of life.

4.  Last I saw, Micronesia and Tonga are fatter than the U.S., as reported by the WHO in July, 2012.  So, you're wrong again there.  Isn't it nice that we have food, the most important thing to living, readily available?

5.  We have freedom of religion.  We can celebrate whatever we want.  And others have a first amendment right to disagree.

6.  Sex, whatever.  I don't get it either.

7.  You got to publish and print this and no one will drag you out of your bed and kill you at night because they disagree with you.  You can say anything, people usually do, and no one will punish you.  That's not censorship.  In some countries, if you badmouth their king, they execute you.  If you disagree or disobey rulers, you're killed.  This country is way ahead of everyone else in censorship.

8.  Wars always happen.  Name me a peaceful country not involved in anything.  Our influence is around the world and we're involved.  War is a part of politics.

I don't really agree or disagree...

but I'm curious.

If AMERICA isn't the best in the world, then who is?

(Just a note - I don't really have an opinion one way or the other... I'm just curious if you are saying this to make a point or to just blast the country without an idea of who you think is "best")

warmaker : Plenty places have diverse races, have you ever seen london?
Or france, there are a lot of africans and muslims there.
There are 27 eu states where the civilians freely moved into other member countrys.

The war with the natives was a race war, since you wanted to wipe them out or convert them to the way of the white men.

"Major Ethan Allen Hitchcock was subsequently among those who found the remains of the Dade party in February. In his journal he accounted for the discovery, then vented his bitter discontent with the conflict: "The government is in the wrong, and this is the chief cause of the persevering opposition of the Indians, who have nobly defended their country against our attempt to enforce a fraudulent treaty. The natives used every means to avoid a war, but were forced into it by the tyranny of our government."

Aknowledged even by soldiers.

Equally asians were barred from the usa before the world war even started.

tbh even dirt poor countrys have cell phones now, obviously there are exceptions like tribal africans.
The point wasnt the us is rubbish, or all this sucks, it was this dosent make the us the greatest.

As for all the doctors going to the us the uk, and indeed many countrys have excellent medicall colleges, that statement is false, as is the olympics statement.
Equally, if you take european nations you get more gold medals before even reaching the us's population levels, and in terms of population v gold medals, the us isnt that high.

geting taxed less dosent automatically mean life is better either.

@energy.
Europe has more people than the us.
Europe has lower consumption.
Europe has been reducing consumption as population goes up.
America has been increasing consumption as population goes up.
yes china consumes badly too, so does canada and mexico.

Food is readily available yes, but how much of it is bought for pennys from starving nations?
@religion Having in god we trust, on money, swearing on a bible in court, god bless america etc etc is enforcement of religion. it may be vague enough not to solely reference christianity but it discounts atheists or belief systems without gods, thats an enforcement and wrong.
The us was to be founded without religious influence to government, that was reveresed, unconstitutional.

@censorship
The us was one of the very last nations to end censorship after the 2nd ww, britain ended it before and we were still an empire, I csnt remember when censorship ended in the us but i think it was in the 70's.

And yet when wikileaks published illegal acts by america the us did everything it could to try and stop it.

The amount of stuff the us government hides is censorship in its own right.

While the us is ahead of many nations, it isnt ahead of everyone, not even nearly.

War isnt a part of politics and its the wrong way to look at it, that attitude begets intolerance, hatred and violence, many nations thinking, we arent being given a choice, theyll attack us.

There are situations where war is unavoidable to maintain peace, but i dont even know when that was last true.
Afghanistan, vietnam, iraq, all ridiculous, all a waste
e of life, and all for a corrupt agenda.

It wouldnt have been so wrong if the aim was actually to free the people, but it wasnt.

if it was, then something would have been done about china, iran, uganda, somalia, n.korea, but theres nothing to be gained for the government from that.

Yes, america is better than a great many countrys.

No, its not the greatest, And there is an over reliance on the wwar economy.

It saved america from collapse in ww1.
Again in ww2.
Ever since, its been fed like a furnace to keep the economy running, given the money you pay in tax for that its surprising how the usa is agains free healthcare or funding failing buissiness etc, you have funded almost all the weapon companys, the vehicle productions etc for years with regular purchases. Conveniantly theres always a war somewhere that the us is fighting, so buissiness stays good.
I genuinely sometimes wonder what would happen if that money stopped flowing.

maybe america might become the greatest nation, but not anytime soon.
For a country to stay on top it needs to change, people get worked up if you so much as alter a piece of the constitution.

Have to rid of these conservative capitalists who have a corrupt global empire to suppress the masses into slavery. Imported religions and products and outsourced services while trying to live in a fascist state of white supremacy where money buys you out of crime. Programs that protect borders and klans that kill blacks both failed big time and for that we pay the ultimate price for hatred. Terrorists disguised as patriots invade other countries and kill their innocent babies, rape them for all that they got and try to establish our beliefs onto them. Call aliens and ufos weather balloons and hide them in hangers then establish remote terror cells domestically with CIA operations. Phony suits and ties using billions of donation money to change nothing using two party propaganda to keep the choice afloat. Media shoving crap garbage down throats of americans telling them what to think, what to eat, what to watch, how to dress. Judged by popularity not by purpose, censor the poor and promote the elite all the while those in seat define defeat, making laws which bind your feet, putting diseases in cows to stop you from eating meat, get this degree and suck their sheet.

Judged by popularity not by purpose, censor the poor and promote the elite all the while those in seat define defeat, making laws which bind your feet, putting diseases in cows to stop you from eating meat, get this degree and suck their sheet.

legacyme3 : To be honest, I guess nobody is the greatest country in the world. And if they were it was probably a long time ago.

I agree with the above comments,

No country is the greatest, mostly because everyone has their own interpretation of what an ídeal' country is.
To one man America could be a harsh place, to another it could be heaven on earth.
It all depends on the individual, and how you interperate what a 'great' country is.

All lot of the so called "Patriots" are obsessed with the idea that America is the greatest nation in the world. But I believe it will soon face its decline.

In my opinion a country is as great as its inhabitants.         Race. What is that? Is there such a thing? Were all one race " Homo sapiens" it makes no difference the tone of skin or whether you were born South or North of the my border....Plus if there such a thing as race than the most diverse species has the best chances at surviving. Its the law of life. Which in turn would help the U.S. Since its the most diverse country.          Agree, won't argue for economics. What you get is what you paid  for (cliche). Were all materialists.       Health. Yes, were fat. Were here get use to it. Though is it a good thing? Of course not! (But if I had a to decide between starving..Give me obesity) But I feel that Obesity in America is tied to it's elitist belief.          Religion. The last bronze age belief we hold with an iron grip. Does it matter.. All religions are the same.       Sex. How many societies have ever encouraged sexuality.. Society has always been around to constrain sexual desire. Sure there are societies that allow adults to walk naked in the middle of a beach. But not one in human history to allow two consenting adults to have sex in the middle of a street. Violence is another topic though and the U.S does a horrible job as a society to glorify it. Well how do you expect them to keep up there agenda of war??

Actually, Australia has participated militarily in almost every operation the US has in the last century in it's capacity as an ally.

That said, I have to agree with the statement that there is no "greatest country"... and the insistence that America is the greatest I think promotes the majority of our bigotry, xenophobia, and generally stupid behavior. There is a difference between having national pride and being a jerk, and thanks to several people, we walk a fine line.

Are we better than a lot of countries in the world? Yes. But so are most First World countries, so what?

There are many aspects of America that would make people doubt its worth. But if I may point out, everyone does start with an equal opportunity of sorts. We can all receive an education, which among other things almost levels the playing field to a completely flat level. Our social mobility is off the charts (that is, the poorest of the poor can become the richest of the rich if they set their mind to it, and of course, the richest of the rich can become the poorest of the poor if they are not careful). And it is a free country. With few exceptions, citizens are allowed by law to practice any religion (the point that is made that people hate on certain religions is not valid- I hate Green Day, but that doesn't stop anybody from listening to it. Just because some people hate Christians or Muslims doesn't take away their right to worship), we have the right to say whatever we want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone or threaten national security, the list goes on. Another point: think for a moment about a world without us, without our military support and without our wild spending. Other countries love the fact that we are in debt, and thrive because of it. I won't go so far as to say that the US is the greatest of countries, as it does have a great deal of flaws, but if one focuses on only the flaws and neglects the positives of any country, then every country on earth should be condemned.

Well I like to see people actually care what is happening in the world. As far as who is the greatest its all an opinion and there is no standard  anymore to compare one from another.

If you would go over to the poll's forum and let me know what you think about my poll at

I don't have much to add to the debate but I just want to say that any country/nation/group/person that claims to be better than everyone else is actually just showing that they are inferior than all the rest.

Izziah : Its debateable if your military helps anyone. And your debt dosent help many nations. However the usa became dominant by making nations dependant on them for loans so if thats how other nations overtook it would certainly be ironic.
