Simple, this is the thread to talk about your most favorite and least things about college. How is it? Are the teacher nice, wierd, strict? Now I can't speak for myself because I haven't been to college. (I'm too young). I have had tours of a community and university but that's about it. So I would like to know how your college experience is/was or what you hope itll be like.

ClearAsCrystal : what I like about college is being able to choose what time your classes are and also being able to meet a wide variety of people. I don't like that you get tons of homework. As for the teacher they have all been very nice and not very strict.

There wasn't much I loved about college.  I've always loved school in general, but I didn't feel particularly strongly about anything in college.  I guess I liked that schedules were so flexible, there aren't 'school rules' to obey, and that you are treated like responsible adults.  You can bring things to eat or drink, you can bring a laptop to take notes on, you can bring a friend if your professor will allow....
Sure there's lots to like.

What I DIDN'T like was the lack of education for some fields.  For the most part, cheating is VERY easy to get away with in college.  I don't use internet on my phone, but students would often pull web browsers up on their cell phones during tests since it's not as though cell phones are against any rules.  There doesn't seem to be much accountability and professors just expect you to play by the honesty policy.

As a student who goes to a community college I'll tell you its quite different then your normal school that your use to.

1. Bigger Campus- Even thou I go to a community college, I still have to walk a good amount to get too some of my classes.

2. Professors not Teachers- Instead of your typical teacher whose job is to teach (sorry if I'm insulting you Singelli); professors have actual jobs or had skills where their last profession relates to the class (well at my school they do). My Philosophy teacher was a Defense Attoerny, my Political Science teacher a TV Reporter, my Business Law teacher a person who works in private law; so these teachers have some knowledge on the subject.

3. Actual Food- No more school lunches, they have coffee, soda machines, snack machines, and other food similar to that and more. But you can also just go out to eat and buy something with your own money.

4. YOU HAVE TO STUDY- This isn't like your regular school where you could get away with not studying if you pay attention. You have to study the material if you want a good grade.

Overall I think you'll like it.

Oldschool41 :  You're not insulting me, but I'd have to disagree with you on part of what you said.  None of the college professors I ever took or that I know had a job in the field they teach about.  I'm sure that many do, but it's not a requirement for all classes.

I can assure you that I have full knowledge on my subject however.

As for food...ah yes, I forgot about that.  You can pretty much eat whatever you want, of course.  Even the cafeterias are better than high school's cafeterias.

Singelli : Well I'm glad to hear that you know what your teaching. I'll agree with you to an extent that college professors having a job in the field they teach about is not a requirement for all classes; however I believe that it helps with the students learning as they can refer to a professor for advice on a specific topic or question (particularly for papers...which by the way is the only downside to college.)

Oldschool41 :  Yes, college professors certainly do like to assign projects as opposed to regular homework, don't they?  I guess that never even occurred to me: how different the workload is.  Professors love papers and projects.

My students were just asking me earlier today if I liked math, and I found the question a little shocking.  I told them that I sure would hope every teacher liked the subject they teach, but they reminded me that there are many who don't.

I think that most college professors actually ENJOY teaching anyways, unlike high school teachers.

The people in college are much nicer than high school jerks.

There is really no need to be nervous.

After your first class, it is all good.

It takes about a week to find your way around the college and find all your classes.

Ask people questions about what places there are to eat and where they are.

People's first 2 semesters are pretty much the same so those are the people you will likely meet often in your other classes, so get to know them.

My favorite thing about college when I was a college student was the people I met.  Truly you meet your life friends at college, as I've made many best bud's on campus (and for the last semester I was there they were the reason I stayed that long).   I really miss them, which makes me miss my college town; but I will never miss the homework and all the grades.   I just realized at the end that I just don't learn using 1000 dollar books, I learn by hands on.   If you love school work and projects and other things like that then college is a much nicer place to you than it was for me.  I became such a social butterfly in those 1.5 years than I ever have in my life.  Of course it was either that or just be a loner, seeing as I was the only person from my school that went to my college.   I also liked the Band at school, despite its short comings there was never a dull moment during rehearsal and during the concerts.  The campus games were also fun and the clubs were usually fantastic.

mr.keys : Not true in my case. Professors at my school have notes for you to copy and write down (I have 2 professors out of my entire years at high school who do something similar to what your discribing but they have some brief notes that you can write down.) It really depends on the college; I'll assume that the bigger colleges tend to do what you describe.

Deadman9001 :  I didn't make many friends at college at all, and in fact I couldn't stand most of the people I was around every day.  LOL  However, that being said,  I think it probably IS true for most people that they make the most 'friends' then.  College is the time young people really get to learn about being an adult and they begin to branch out and try new things.

Well, you're right, but I didn't meet him through college. LOL

Though I know many people do meet their significant other's through college.

Another thing that I like about college is that you are responsible for your own education. Professors aren't going to penalize you for taking notes, nor are they even going to check to see if you did. You won't get baby-sat by your professor.

By the way, I 'm going to stop posting here just to avoid you getting disqualified because of sandwiching.

I really love how easy it is to learn in college. At my university, we have a great library, staff, and plenty of resources to assist us in the learning process. However, I dislike how expensive it costs and also how no one really guides you through it when you first get started. I learned the ropes mostly through trial and error which has actually cost me money. Advice to future college students: Don't pick a major that you're not sure about just so you could pick a major. Take your time, take your gen-eds first and see what interests you. Also, make sure that your classes are required or else you'll be losing money without getting closer to graduating (though knowledge is always nice). The biggest thing in college is to attend class, survive, and just care.

College... I did not enjoy it in the beginning, mainly because I had no idea what I wanted to do. I only vaguely mentioned I wished to be a sort of writer, but I had not put much thought into it, and already my major was changed to English. As I found classes that interested me and met up with new people, I started enjoying it a little, but it was not exceptionally great. I think I may have enjoyed high school more.

A big thing I hated was there were so many BAD professors I had to go through for English before I could find great or tolerable ones. One teacher had the mentality of "If I can do it, so can you," when it came to a freshmen workload. I do not exaggerate when I say nearly the entire class was arguing with her about how she assigned more work than any other freshmen course. Right at the beginning, she assigned weekly homework (not too big a deal, to be honest) plus a project for the month (not too bad, yet, but starting to get tough here), then some extra homework certain days (pissed off some people, I was just BARELY getting a hold of it) and then assigned another project that would be due JUST after the monthly project. People asked if she could spread it out a little, but she said "I have 3 jobs plus a mother and I can do everything so you should all do this!"

I can understand that professors cannot cave into everything but if the entire class cannot keep up, it not only will ruin the students' time (especially for a freshmen class) but also look bad on the professor. I dropped her class to another woman who demanded we used the school site for only SOME assignments while she collected other ones. The problem was, she never set up the school site to accept the work, so we had to e-mail. She got all sorts of mad when people got confused and sending/turning in work in the wrong places and gave lower grades for that. Dropped her as well; she needed to be better organized or at least a little more understanding.

Third English professor managed to find the right rhythm for the class, it just sucked that I lost money from withdrawing from those two idiot professors. That is when I learned of ratemyprofessor.com which guided me pretty well for the rest of the college experience.

The great thing about college is discovering classes, teachers, or activities you never realized you might enjoy. Before college, history generally bored me, even when I had a pretty decent teacher. The professors I had for Western Civilization 1 and 2 kept things interesting! They added small gossip about history as to keep things entertaining (nothing appropriate for the board sadly ). I also took a cooking class and learned to finally cook for myself! And when you get to the heart of your major, passed those required or simpler classes is when I began to have fun. scriptwriting taught me a new method of writing and had me explore different parts of my creativity! Creative Writing helped me find exercises to help deal with writer's block (not 100% effective, but helps a little).

I even enjoyed a science class that started off horrible because the professor was more a scientist than a teacher, but she started actually learning from her students and found a rhythm we both were able to keep at.

Oh, there is one more thing to hate, and that is finding parking. If you commute in any way, many schools tend to have very competitive parking. If you college does/did not have that problem, I consider you very, VERY lucky!

The best part about college? Without a doubt, I would have to say the people.

In high school, I never thought that I could have closer friends than I did then. I was wrong. Completely and utterly wrong. It's almost appalling just how far off the mark I was.

The friends I've made at college have shaped who I am radically. They constantly challenge me and make me strive to be a better person (some obviously more so than others). These folks have so much more depth they're willing to explore than anybody I've ever known. Maybe it's just my college. Maybe it's just the people I found to be friends with. I don't know. What I do know is that these are the most amazing people I have ever had the privilege of getting to know. They know how to be light, laid back, and fun yet also how to dig in and talk about deep issues in life. What's more is that they're not afraid to do it.

It's not just the friends, either; it's the faculty too. Bear in mind, I attend a private college where classes are small and teachers love getting to know their students. Because of this, my professors know me by name, and even have a decent idea of who I am - one even knows the kinds of jokes he can make about how rainy it is where I come from (140 inches a year, baby). The professors can be a real joy to listen to and learn from. (Some, of course are duller than a black towel but that can't be avoided.) It's quite a blessing to be at a place like this, where there's room to breathe; where there's room to grow; where there's room to - I don't know - be!

College?
I love college.
I recommend it for everyone.
Just take a few years of it and call me in the morning.
You'll thank me for it.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.
