Actually, this time I decided to try SLAX.  It works completely perfectly, despite it being a system not meant for HD install.  There are third party installer apps, though.  I've used it and it constantly gives me a GRUB Error 17 on bootup (supposedly a messed up partition table disk order).  It's the only existing installer.  Can either of you help me with the GRUB Error 17?  The guide I found to fixing it is:
(sudo fdisk /dev/hda) followed by fdisk commands X F W in that order.
The important part to look at is the F, which is to .  But, whenever I use the X-F-W combination (eXtra functionality, Fix partition table, Write to hard drive)  it tells me that all is in order and leaves it at that.  I've tried wiping the disk, and repartitioning it, but that just didn't work.  I still get the GRUB error 17.

Try not using GRUB. You shouldn't need it if you're just installing one OS.

wakka432ya : That depends on your installer, but usually there's an option on if you want to use a boot manager or not.

Edit 9/4/12:  I just got a stroke of genius (and later remarked on my own stupidity) when I realised:  What if, because all the systems I've tried (all 20 of them) failed, that I needed to try an older system?  I tried Warty Warthog (Ubuntu 4.10) and it worked extremely well.  I left a space for a test partition for any other systems, but otherwise, I'm done.  This took far to long, but I'm happy with the results and I learned a lot.

Thank you both for all of your help.  I did need it, and I am happy with the result.
