The reason I think it's not The Legend of Link because you can change the name of Link in the games, but you can't change the name in Zelda, like if you changed Zelda's name to Monkey or something like that, Navi would be like "Link, we have to go to the castle to save Monkey." That is why it is the Legend of Zelda and not the Legend of Link.

Well it's not just that. There's also the fact that Zelda is the main goal of every single Legend of Zelda game. True, Link is usually the one who does all of the work, but his driving force is always Zelda. I think the makers of the game decided it would make more sense to name the games after the one thing you're always trying to get to.

Well, Zelda II was called "The Adventure of Link" and it wasn't that good (not as good as the first one or the ones to follow in my opinion).. So I think they wanted to stay with the name that made the game successful Just my theory

During the period which the game took place, Zelda was in rule.  someone told me that when something happens in a kingdom they would name the event after whoever was ruling the land at the time.  I'm not sure if that's true or not but it sounds legit.
