It all depends on what you have. I would take wired over wireless because I don't have a laptop. If I had a laptop I would still prefer wired most of the time. The speed is better and more consistent than wireless.

I would probably have wireless though so that I could use my laptop anywhere in my apartment. That would be nice.

I like wireless. Why? More devices can access wireless at once. I can be using my computer's browser while using my DS online, and while having my Wii connected to WiiConnect24. I don't need a thousand wires all over the place. Plus, the whole "security issue" thing is nothing to worry about as long as you don't stamp, "MY WEP KEY IS XXXX-XXX-XXXX-X" on your forehead and frolic in public.

Wired internet, everything else is crappy.

As for setup at home, get wired to a router, and then wire anything that's stationary. And use anything temporary or often moving around in the house wireless. Anything really close to the router should also go wireless (unless you want the PERFECT speed)

Doesn't get better than that.

Well, it really depends. If you are in a house sharing a connection with multiple people like I am then wireless is the best option to go with. Wireless sucks though, it's slow, works in certain areas, and vulnerbal to others joining in on your connection. Good thing is it's wireless and has no wires and also can get a connection anywhere where it has strength but that's the only good things.

I really hate sharing a connection though cause it causes so many problems at times, wired is a lot better unless you are using devices like a PSP or something else that has the ability to connect wirelessly, then get wireless lol

They are now offering wireless internet that is just as fast as any wired internet connection. In 2007 they released 802.11 N- it is 150 Mbps, they also have in production for new routers said to go up to 500 Mbps - which is faster then most dsl wired connections. Wireless internet can be as fast as you want it, it just depends on what kind of router you have

Pros for wireless- you can have multiple things connected to the internet at the same time.

Cons- Depending on what kind of router you have it may not be as fast as it would be for wired

Where did my post go!!

Wirless internet or wireless network are you talking about?

Wireless internet - I wouldnt bother with it, sure you get portability and decent speed, but if you got bandwidths (like here) they'll probly suck and wireless connections usualy cost more..
- go with wired!

Wireless network - Definatly worth having. Get your phone, computer, game systems all conected without cords running everywhere. You can set MAC+IP locks so only MAC addresses you set can access the network, so thats safe. I pinged my router, 1ms, so ping/speed isnt a factor (unless your on an internet connection greater than 54mbps..). Only downside to wireless network, they get interfeered by some portable phones, and other wireless devices (door bell? electric garage opener?).
- go with wireless!

Gaming isnt a problem on wireless, I think you could almost even have a wireless lan games comp without problems.

@pbishop2010, I dont think thats 500mbps internet, i think thats just wireless network. Suprised it isnt up yet, there are many 1gbps connections out there. Friend of mine doing networking says all they have to do is up the frequency and you get more speed, but by doing that you get less range, and it burns out the antaners faster.. so a win-lose situation.

So in conclusion, I've never personaly had problems with wireless (network, wired modem) connections (for gaming online and lan). Just dont go get the cheapest wireless router out there.

Some points:

wired:
faster and reliable connection
can't do without wires ^^
quite tedious-looking
wires, wires, wires, and wires for every connection ^^

wireless:
convenient accessibility
not that reliable
tends to lessen connection by approx. 50% for every closed wall obstacle
tech-looking ^^

Well, at the end, you're the one who decides what to use.
Maybe both ^^

Well, I don't know about your country, but over here in Sweden we have a special kind of "portable modem" from which you can connect to the internet from about 99% of the country.

No idea what sort of technology it uses.

Ours are cheap, maybe slightly more than ordinary broadband, but the speeds are abysmal. You can't even use Youtube with them.

The same can actually be achieved through a portable Phone, Zig.
Theres a feature on some new phones called "modem" where it acts as one and a wireless network.

Neat, huh?

@DM: so it isn't really worth it anyway?

@Neyro: phones typically have bad web browsers and most phones still need a hotspot to use the internet. also, i haven't heard about that feature, but I'd bet a lot of money that those phones are very expensive and that the feature costs extra money

Wireless Internet is horrible. I tried it and it was only a bit faster than dial-up.
Wireless Network(Thats when you have a modem but a router)depends on your wireless router. Don't buy a cheap one because it will make you want to kill yourself. Buy a linksys router. Some of the best. There is only a SLIGHT difference in speed.Hardly noticable. It never goes out unless there is someone close to you with another wireless network, which is to be expected. Besides that, the internet is perfect with that router. I hate that my family's internet provider is the only high-speed in my area. They run a monopoly and they get away with it by using different names.Stupid Home Telephone!

You mean like how with cable companies they can buy areas that only THEY can provide service to (taking away the people's right to choose)?

anyway, wireless signals interfere with each other? that must makes things much worse

Pretty much, yeah. Not all wireless signals mess it up.When another router is close,it goes out.

i would definately have to go with wired. Its much faster and more efficent. It may be more money if you have to wire a computer from a long distance but its definately worth it. If your not to concerned with speed and you just want a basic connection i would choose wireless

Lol. I so choose wired. I do use wireless network but thats so much different than wireless internet. Seriously, wireless network is the best. Only sacrifice a bit of speed to go where ever you want in your house. It's so worth the bit of speed loss. Wireless internet is just slow. It's faster than dial-up but slower than high-speed. And you keep losing your internet. You have to be near a freaking tower for you to have net. If you do have satilite its all good. But its extremely expensive to have sat. wireless internet. So, all in all, wireless network is better.

I use wireless on my laptop and can roam around the house freely...
(note - for this to work properly you need to have your router centralized in the area)

also I do torrents with wireless as well and all works great.

I vote wireless...

On games, Wireless can be better.
Depends on connection too.
Wireless tends to have less connection, but sometimes its good.

No man, wireless is never better for games.

There's always this slight performance decrease with wireless. This can easily ruin gaming.

Though it works fine for other stuff.

Can use WiFi for games, just get a wireless-N series router . I get a <1ms ping from one end of my house to the other, and full 54mbps connection speed. And im only using a wireless-G adapter. If I had a wireless-N adapter, it'd be better than a standard CAT5 lan (Theoretically speaking)

Well I'am a wireless kind of person since I don't like being tied down but everything has its pros and cons.

Wired offers:
fast if it is or above dsl/cable speed
reliable aka unless the wirebreaks it will always work
Increased security aka online 1 wire unless we start getting into hubs and routers
A pain in the ass...wires everywhere man Dx

Wireless offers:
Mobility you can do your task almost anywhere
Easy sharing over wireless networks
No mess to deal with =D
Inconsistent connection speed and sometimes frequent d/c Dx

With that said I like wireless because I prefer mobility, but If I need something I have to get done will go with wired since that way I'm certain I will get the task done. I can only hope wireless can become more reliable =o
