so the 360, internet explorer, media player and windows 7 are now banned from sale in germany.
microsoft anticipated this and moved there distribution from germany to the netherlands.
Its because motorola sued them over patent infringement, using there tech without permission.
If microsoft paid for rights to them, it would cost them 4 billion us dollars a year, every year.
Microsoft are apealing, if the charge is held, it may then be enforced elsewhere, with the possibility of recalling all offending products.
This is not uncommon now, tech companys are in a patent war, suing and counter suing.
A while ago ps3 sales were banned in europe while, lg i think, where making claims, although the ban was since lifted.
Personaly, it dosent concern me, i dont use xbox, ie, media player or windows 7.

Yeah I read about it. It's pretty weird actually. It's just further feuding between Google and Microsoft which has been going on for years.

The whole injunction revolves around the Video compression technology that their products are using. The whole case sounds kidna wishy washy because if it was such a big deal they would be suing in the US where both companies are based, not in Germany.

I wouldn't read to much into this temporary injunction

"But in a curious cross-national legal development, Motorola was preemptively ordered in April by a U.S. court not to enforce the German ban, were it granted, pending a ruling on a related patent dispute in Seattle. The chances Motorola would act to immediately enforce the German ban are thus nil, says Microsoft. What’s more, Reuters notes that Microsoft has already moved its European distribution operations from Germany to the Netherlands in anticipation of the German ruling.

“This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web,” said Microsoft in a statement. ”Motorola is prohibited from acting on today’s decision, and our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola’s broken promise.”

Well that's what you get when you use other people's technology without paying them any loyalties or for the use of the patent itself.

Me personally i do own a xbox 360, but if in the stupidly obscure result that Microsoft stop selling the 360 in the UK, I'll just buy a ps3 and that pretty much leaves game developers to concentrate on ps3 titles. Which is likely to maybe increase the quality and effort put into games as well.

So it's Win/Win for me i suppose. Either i get to keep my 360 or i can just buy a ps3 and probably get better games for it

sonicmcmuffin : its actualy pretty hard not to infringe now, people patent everything, companys like facebook and google now buy companys just to get there patents.
if they recalled you'd get a refund which would be sweet allright.
you wouldnt really need to return it though, they dont know who has them.
although you would then have a hard time getting games here.

Linux going to reign supreme in Germany? Nah, they'll just develop their own OS that mimics Windows for laughs, :p

In the meantime, I'll be waiting for Germanish Videogame companies to start making Dreamcast games once again... I mean more Wii Titles. Because something is going to have to cover that blank spot.
