Since it's Sonic, this competition should be about speedruns, not high scores. I guess your scores is indirectly related to how fast you go, though.

Too bad the RGR isn't updated to handle speedruns, though.

Someone70 : I must say, if it were based on SpeedRuns, I'd actually be in a bit of trouble For the Genesis games, it takes a lot of effort from me to be able to get a great time on the levels. However, if it were any games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed, etc, I'd be perfectly fine, Nya~. (Sadly, we can't get those games on here, so I'd still be outta luck )

I honestly thought that I was not going to do well in this competition. I haven't played the original Sonic games since I played them on Sega Smash Pack Vol 1 for the Dreamcast, and that was years ago. But after playing around on this game with save states to memorize the first 3 worlds, I think I can do it. Problem is, the strategy I have come up with requires near flawless execution. I don't know if a month is enough time to perfect my runs, but I will try. If I can pull off my strategy, I will be able to beat the current top score (+280,000 points) by the end of world 4. I will be buckling down with this one. 

David, I love when the game chosen for the high score competition is extremely difficult and has no known way to easily max the score. I will probably have as much fun with this one as I did for Aldynes

Score is tied into how many enemies you kill, how many items you acquire, as well as rings total, and time to complete the level, I believe.

As that is the case, it should be about who can do the most in the least amount of time basically. It'll be interesting to see who places where.

legacyme3 : Yeah, I have found that you have to have a strategy for each level. In some levels, You are better off focusing less on rings and more on getting through as fast as possible. Other levels might have so many rings that you could get a better score collecting all without getting hit at the cost of earning 0 points for a time bonus. Like Aldynes, it is very helpful to play the game not in time trial mode so you can use save states to really explore every level.

Someone70 : That's a future feature but since I don't have time to make that feature currently, it's not currently possible to have "speed runs".

Yeah, it is . The only cheat I know is that debug mode and level select. When someone uses the debug mode, it is obvious as it makes things look wacky and ruins the score anyway, and there is no reason to use the level select because odds are, the first 2 worlds are where you are going to get a huge chunk of your points anyway as it is hard to get a good ring bonus and time bonus on the later levels

Davideo7 : I'm just coming up with ideas here, Isn't it possible to for example you have to beat the last sonic the hedgehog boss aka final zone and whoever posts the screenshot with the shortest time wins, I know a bit about sonic the hedgehog but not enough to actually become that much of a threat in this competition

sonicmcmuffin : Technically, you could do that, but since the high score mode puts screen  shots in order of score, not time (unless there are 2 identical scores), you would have to look at every single high score submission instead of looking at the top 3. Given this game has a lot of high score submissions, it would be kind of annoying scrolling through them just looking at times. Anyway, speed runs are going to be a future feature where the submissions are put in order of time and not score, so I'm sure that this game will be revisited when that happens

Whew, I forgot Sonic games had a score.  This seems like it will be -very- tough to get a good score, as I've always found it hard to memorize the Sonic levels.

Is it a good idea to collect the chaos emeralds?  Or are they just not worth the effort when going for a high score?

madison : It's definitely worth going for the Emeralds. Each one is worth I think 10,000 points (Mega, am I right?) and there's no timer on the special stage, so you can go through collecting all the rings you want, which are still worth 100 points each at the end of the stage. Plus I think you still get 100 points for hitting the bumpers. I'll have to try playing again to see.

Edit: So I guess the Chaos Emeralds are worth nothing in themselves, but the special stage is still worth going to because of the extra ring bonus you can get with no time penalty, plus the ability to earn some extra lives and whatnot. Anyway, I just played for the first time in a few years and I got a score in the 150,000's so I might do pretty well in this one. =)
