Pokemon Red. A game that really started the Pokemon business in its variety in games such as Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, and White! Above all of them, Pokemon Red was probably the beginning of the era of Pokemon. Let's get to reviewing, shall we? Oh, I'll bold the important points in the rating I give. Other stuff is more detail or me rambling about it. Fair warning

DIFFICULTY: 7
The game is pretty tough. I had quite some trouble beating a few people in the game, but this game is basically trial and error. It has that RPG feel to it, you need to go around and level your Pokemon up and do whatever it takes to get them to the very best and even evolve to even more Powerful Pokemon! Basically, the Difficulty all depends on how you level your Pokemon up. The less you level up Pokemon, the more of a challenge it is.

DEPTH: 8
The depth of the game is very long, if you ask me. It doesn't seem that long at a first glance, but you haven't seen anything yet. Oh no no no, you are in for a surprise on what you got to do to COMPLETELY beat the game. To beat the game 100%, you need to beat the elite Four, Team Rocket, and your rival. While you are at it, you need to explore the world collecting ALL the pokemon!. That takes FOREVER, I tell you that much. I swear it took me weeks to beat the game just catching the Pokemon alone! It pays off afterwards though. Becoming the ultimate Pokemon master is a great achievement.

STORY: 4
There isn't any real story to the game. The main point is you are a 10 year old kid that has decided to become a Pokemon Trainer! So your next door neighbor, Prof. Oak, decides to help you along the way to start your adventure off with 3 starter choices. While his Grandson wants to be a Trainer too. And challenges you to become the best ever. After you beat your rival, Oak says you are on your own for now. His dream is to catch every Pokemon in existance, all 151 of them. He's too old to do that now, so he's depending on you to do the rest.

ADDICTIVENESS: 10!
The game is flawless about the gameplay, the game is so addicting, it will keep you determined to play the game for a very long time until you catch them all. I swear the game is that addicting. I remember the first time I played this, I wasn't that big of a Pokemon fanatic back then, but looking back to then and the first time I played it, I realized what a dramatic change of opinion about the game series I made about Pokemon is amazing. I love it when I realized it, and I still do today.

SOUND: 9
The sound is nearly flawless, the game's effects to hits, scratches, even the Pokemon noises are amazing! Even the music is legendary. For an 8 bit genre, it really is impressive. All of the other series on Gameboy had okay sound, and FX, but this game has impressed the hell out of me.

GRAPHICS: 7
The graphics for the game are mediocre at best really. Kind of disappointing really. The game in graphics are okay. The effects after a hit are what you expect from an 8 bit game, some flashing, maybe an effect there, but overall, nothing special. Just like the map outside of battle, mediocre 8 bit design. Not the worst, but its up to potential in the 8 bit era. So its alright.

OVERALL: 9.6
Its pretty good, I enjoy the heck out of it, there is a lot to do, and a lot of impressive things inside the game. The game had everything, Sound, Addictiveness, Depth, and Difficulty. Its what a real gamer really liked. Not much story to talk about, but it can be brushed aside since its not THAT important. Graphics were okay for an 8 bit game. Nothing I'm disappointed about.
Overall, 9.6 is my final Rating.
Do I recommend playing it: Yeah!

This game doesn't disappoint at all. So I recommend you going to the RGR and play it now if you haven't.
Thanks for reading.

The first generation was definitely my favorite. Maybe that's because it was the first set that I played, and I'm a bit biased. But I stand by my opinion.

Anyway, out of curiosity, would you recommend playing the GBA remakes instead, because of the improved graphics? It's been a while since I played them. But I remember the remakes being a fantastic set of games, that stayed true to the original while giving the game an incredible makeover.

soxfan849 : Yeah the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes of the originals are pretty good. If you are a fan of improved graphics, yeah I recommend go and play that too. If you are a true Retro gamer, I'd recommend staying with the original game. Nothing beats the original y'know

I know exactly what you mean. I even break out the original cartridges from time to time and play off of those. It's mostly for the nostalgia, but also because it's just easier to play the originals of the handheld system that they were designed for (well, actually I play them off the Gameboy Advance SP) than it is to play them off my bulky laptop. I can lay out on my bed or my couch like I used to when I was a kid, instead of hunching over in front of my computer.

Well when I first played this game on Gameboy Color, I liked it. I also liked the fact that they remade this game too.

Pokémon Red is one of the greatest Pokémon games ever. It was original. It was classic. And it did not have all these crazy new Pokémon. Do not get me wrong, I like some of them... but most just seem weird and annoying. Like the Giraffe one... so lame.

Alongside Pokemon Blue, Pokemon BLUE was my first ever video game. At my first attempt I started with Squirtle, and i did also catch other pokemon but i rarely used them. When I got to the Elite Four I had a level 82 Blastoise and it tore stuff up. I beat the game and was satisfied but every other attempt around 5 years ago when i was a year into pokemon, I did the strategy of a balanced team. Pokemon them became VERY fun with in my opinion, Pokemon Crystal being my favorite until the remakes, Heartgold and Soulsilver came out. About your review however there is one thing about the battle systems that got modified in later titles, an example would be Wrap attack and how it was a very cheap move if it landed And another problem is how you cant catch a legendary AT ALL unless it is asleep, paralyzed, etc. its stupid and im glad it was changed. However with all the good childhood memories I have of the game, i think it is very good and I give it thumbs UP.
