Oldschool41 : 49ers over Pats? I don't exactly see that happening. I don't think they would have done it if they did manage to get to the Super Bowl last year and I don't think they'll do it now. But as I've said many times, I don't really understand this game THAT well so maybe I'm missing something.

Also I'm not necessarily saying I want to give up on Kappy or anything but I'm wondering if it's maybe jumping the gun to permanently give the ball over to him just yet. He's clearly the future for the team but is the future now? If the Niners do manage to make it into the playoffs, is he the kind of QB that can lead the team through it? Can they actually win a Super Bowl under him right now?

Crazy Li : I get ya. Lets just agree that the 49ers-Pats game is a VERY IMPORTANT game for standings in the Playoff picture. Its still a little ways off, so lets worry about the Miami team.

I don't think Kappy or Alex Smith will be the QBs that will lead the team to a Superbowl. If anything it will be the 49ers Defense and Running game that will be the key factors as to how far the 49ers will go in the playoffs. I would compare this 49ers team to the Jets team that made the AFC Championship game 2 times in a row...except that they have a MUCH better QB. I think Kappy will start for the Miami game. But if he struggles again against the Dolphins, then the 49ers are in a delima...

1. Switch QBs for the Pats game.

2. Keep a struggling Kappy in at QB.

Both are scary situations for when you have to play the Pats. But if the D and Running game can still be the workhorse, then the QB situation won't be as "big a deal".

Oldschool41 : Running doesn't seem to get you as far in the modern NFL though. It's actually kind of a rarity to invest in a powerhouse back because the passing game dominates the league these days. Everyone just goes for the QB who can do it all and the RBs get nothing. I mean after all, one big passing play can net you a lot more than a run is likely to. The only time you get huge runs is if both safeties completely fail to do their job as that last line of defense when the back gets out into the secondary.

That said, the 49ers are a rushing team no doubt... but if they were to rely just on that and not worry about who's at QB, they'll never win a championship. They still need an above average QB to actually ensure that win.

I overheard something on Sports Center last week where somebody was saying he could easily name 18 starting QBs in the NFL who are better than Alex Smith and there are a few more who are debatable. It's kinda hard to imagine a team winning it all in that kind of situation, really. The teams that actually win more often than not have QBs that are considered "elite" but I kinda wonder if in some cases they only gain that recognition BECAUSE they won it all and if they had not, would anyone be talking about them so highly? If Steve Young didn't win in '94, people would have probably called him a bust. That one year and one championship was enough to save him and make him considered among the great QBs of all time. It's funny how just being able to get the job done when it counts once can completely change people's perspectives. Do you think anyone would be thinking Alex Smith was a better QB than they do now if the Niners won the Super Bowl last year?

Crazy Li : A valid point. No doubt that if the 49ers won the Super bowl then this whole QB situation would never had happen. But then again if the 49ers won the Super Bowl, I would wonder if they would have signed the Free Agents they got or who would have retired about winning the Superbowl.

Now on to your point about 18 starters over Alex Smith, I think he is overestimating the number of QBs better then Alex Smith. I would say only 12 QBs would be clear favorites over Smith, about 8 we can debate, and the rest are terrible. I'm not going to post them all since it would be a pain and consider "spammy". Thou I could always just PM you the list of QBs and tell you if they are clearly better, arguementative, or worse then Alex Smith.

I agree with you on your second paragraph since you do need an above average QB to at least manage the QB. But this again is debateable since I could give examples of Hall of Fame QBs who needed RBs to help win championships.

I actually enjoy the competitive thrill of Football. My favorite teams are the 49ers, Who aren't doing bad this season. I'm impressed. The Raiders, Yeah I know "THEY SUCK GUYSH" and they arent doing that good this season..*cough*oranyotherseason*cough* and the Cheifs. I like KC and they're okay this year..just not the best they can be..if you know what I mean.

All in all, I hope the 49ers get into the Superbowl..Playoffs at least.. I really like them. They work together real well.

If the 49ers and Seahawks lost all their games and the rams won all their games, they would be in the playoffs.
Food for though and false hopes, I guess.

What has Smith done in the league that shows you he's the QB to lead you to a Super Bowl? He's had one decent playoff series in his entire career where he didn't even make it, so I'm surprised that there are people acting like he is. He's an 8 year veteran in the league who has done little but show he can pass short to medium range passes down the middle of the field. He's not dangerous in any way.

Jordanv78: Smith hasn't shown he's a QB that's going to win you a super bowl. He's shown he's a QB that won't lose you a super bowl. With that San Francisco defense, that's kind of what you need. It's like when the Raven's won the super bowl with Trent Dilfer. They didn't need an all-star QB. That's kind of where the 49ers are right now. Alex Smith can usually give you at least 20 points, and the 49ers defense is good enough to stop teams to 13 or less points consistently. Alex Smith gives that team the best chance to win.

mlb789 : If the seahawks for 1-3 and the Rams go 3-1, the rams would PROBABLY make the playoffs. A couple other teams would have to lose, but the Rams hold the division tie breaker over the Seahawks.

trouble982 : By just the Seahawks- Rams situation....

1. Seahawks lose 2 games, Rams win out - Rams make playoffs.

Only way the Rams can get into the playoffs BY JUST LOOKING AT SEATTLE.

Now we have to factor in the Saints, Buccs, Vikings, Giants, and Cowboys as they are a head of the Rams. Its to confusing to post all the possibilities, I suggest that you go to ESPN Playoff Machine to play around with it. Only spot is the Seahawks playoff spot as I can't see the Packers/Bears dropping 4 straight games.

But your correct the Rams CAN make the playoffs, but they need to pretty much win out and get A LOT of help.

The Ravens and Steelers rivalry is still as strong as ever. I am kind of upset, as I am a ravens fan, and the Steelers beat us last week, snapping our home game and division winning streaks. Yeah, it is a set back, but the Ravens are still going to win the division, even if Terrell Suggs is out of the game today.

Crap my Bears loss to the Vikings and the Packers won. Terrible day to be a Bears fan. We better snap out of it next week against the Packers cause I think that the Vikings might have a shot to overtake our wildcard spot.

Oldschool41 : Yeah or of the 5 other teams that are right behind the Bears. The Seahawks game I felt was a must win because I figured the Bears were going to split the two division games...now it almost seems like they need to win out to ensure a playoff spot.

Jordanv78 : Not entirely true. The only teams that have a legitemite shot are the Vikings, Cowboys, Redskins, and Rams. Buccs and Saints are out of it now.

I think what might save the Bears is that we play the Cardinals after the important Green Bay game. So we will get at least 1 win. Plus we end with the Lions so I'm confident that we can win that game.

The only problem is if we lose the Packers and the Vikings beat the Rams, then the Vikings would be in the Wildcard spot. Now most likely it the Bears will retake it as after that the Vikings have to play the Texans (might be a trap game). So as I've said before many times. Most likely it will come down to Packers vs Vikings and Bears vs Lions to decide who will earn the final wildcard spot (can't see Seattle losing there spot).

Oldschool41 : No need to explain it to me, I understand completely. Ok, so 4 teams competing with the Bears sorry. lol

Either way realistically with the way the defense has been playing and the fact that we have little run game this season we probably split the division games and win against the Cards. Either way that might not be enough to put us in is what I was getting at.

Jordanv78 : I agree with you as well. Then again I like our final 3 game schedule as its the "easiest" compared to the other teams (I'm not going to count the other NFC North as we play the same schedule pretty much).

Dallas I'm confident that I can rule them out as their final games are tough (Steelers, Saints, Redskins). Not to mention Dez might be out for the rest of the season so the Boys lose a big weapon. I believe that the Skins will win the NFC East even if RG3 is benched because of health issues (Cleveland, Eagles, Dallas remaining on there schedule). But it really comes down to how the Giants will do the final 3 games (Ravens, Falcons, Eagles.) Giants win, they in. Giants lose to both Ravens and Falcons; Skins are in.

Rams are done as they won't beat Seattle at home.

That leaves the Vikings as the only "legitimite" threat to the wildcard spot for the Bears. But the Vikings play a more difficult final 3 games then the Bears.

Pretty much all of the NFC Playoff rosters are squared (in my opinion, NFC East will come down to the wire...again); now its just who will earn the other bye week and who plays who.

Oldschool41 : Crazy that you would predict a for sue Win for the Skins with RG3 out and some unknown QB at the helm against Philly. Dallas has a pretty good run defense and although the Eagles are bad they are home in that game. A backup QB on the road? I'll take the home team if I'm a betting man. lol

I was even further bummed about the Bears playoff chances when I saw that they had to put Gould on IR. Now we roll with Olindo Mare.

Really sucks to not have him going into a huge stretch of games. Go from having one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history to having a scrub of the waiver wire.

Jordanv78 : I've been spamming a bit on this thread so I will stop after this post.

Yes I know that a rookie QB on the road would be a bad idea. But I remind you that the Skins play against the Browns who despite having a good Defense (under rated one as well), the offense is hit or miss. I think the Redskin Defense would have to pull the win out if RG3 is out. Not to mention a healthy Garcon will help out Cousins if he does start.

Dallas I can't really decide since they looked like 2 teams during the Bengals game. Steelers are fighting for the wildcard so I assume that the Steelers will rebound from the loss to the Chargers. Dallas also has a lot of injuries.

And the Ravens have won the AFC Nirth for the second year in a row with a 33-14 win over the Giants. And it ends the three game losing streak the Ravens were on, too.

thing1 : Too bad it looks like your going to be playing the Colts. Won't be an easy win. Better hope Ray is 100%

Seahawks looking unbeatable, wouldn't want to face them in the playoffs.

Looks like Redskins vs Cowboys is going to decide who will win the NFC East (Giants are out of it). Redskins win they in, Cowboys win they in.

Oldschool41 : we have the 4 seed, with a chance at the 3 seed. Who is the 5 and 6 seeds? I would check, but my play off app does not want to work right now. :/
