So, for the entire year up to this last week, my geometry teacher had always graded the homework by means of completion. As long as you did it, you got a 100.

Some kids took advantage of this, and just slung down random answers so they could get a good grade. To fix that problem, she went back to the traditional homework grading, and now everyone does terrible on the homework, even though we still try on the work.

*sigh* I'm gonna end up failing geometry now... :/

My teacher (or teachers even) always do this unfortunately...

Grading 100 for completion is stupid, if you arent forced to try by the work whats the point, its meant to aid your learning, the way she marks now is how it should be.

This method doesn't work so well with geomety but it does work great with stuff that requires writing because then you can tell if someone is actually trying or just cheap skating it.

I understand why your teacher would change things, but she probably could have done it a little differently. Like collect the homework and just make sure it actually looks like you tried.

That said I loved when teachers graded based on completion rather than actual answers. Why? Because I never really had to do any homework. I could have. I knew what to do. But I didn't feel the need. I still did well on tests, but others that thought like me tended to struggle. I can see why your teacher would want you guys to do the work.

Honestly, the old system is the system of a lazy teacher. Someone who wants their evenings free do homework like this. But is assures that the students are going to not try as hard to get the right answer because it doesn't matter. It happens every time. The policy she does now is what she should have done in the first place. She could use the homework to find out where the students were struggling and focus on that. If she did it that way, you probably wouldn't have as much trouble as you are having now. It is so annoying. I'm in my Phase I of teaching right now, and the grading of completion style is one of the many they tell us over and over does not work, causes troubles, and harms the students in the end. I will not make homework this way for my classes. Shame on your teacher for doing it in the first place. She failed you.

Is the policy better or worse.

Each system of homework grading has its ups and downs. With the old way, a teacher can grade it easier and it wouldn't take much time. Plus, most students will end up getting a better grade. But it's a shame when students start abusing this system. But it just means they aren't learning anything, and it will reflect on their tests.

If I was a teacher, I'd just let them continue doing what they're doing, but make homework count for less and tests count for more. That way, it all depends on how much you're learning, rather than how much work you're doing outside of class.

Oh, I see. Well, if you find that your students are failing, you don't just go to completion grades. Like Someone70 said, if they don't go over it to find out what they got wrong and how to correct it, they won't do well on tests (except for you as you mentioned ). But if that is how it is for most of the class, perhaps she should just make her own problems instead of the book problems because they are apparently harder than the tests.

There was actually a problem in the book that not even my teacher, or any of the other math teachers, or even a college math professor couldn't figure out what to do...

It's pretty messed up.

If she was doing a hw for just completion and realized no one was putting in any effort, she could just NOT grade the hw. If you want the extra practice, do it. If not, don't. But if she's going to grade it and the majority can't do it, an addition to her new (old) policy should be taking time to answer hw questions and explain the answers. If they can find time for it in college, she can find time over the course of the whole school year. My calc 3 teacher was so awesome i'm taking his Diff Eq class this semester. No grading on hw whatsoever, but he puts aside time on Friday's before the quiz to answer any questions we might have. 

I must say, in your case, the book might do things a different way than she teaches and that could be why it's harder. In which case rcarter2 is right and she should do her own hw assignments. No textbook will teach the same, but if it's a fundamental reason that's preventing you from the hw, you should ask.

Sorry dude. No offense, but you had it WAY too easy. I'm glad she changed it though. I mean, if she doesn't grade it, how do you know what you did and/ or didn't get wrong? You could've been a fail at absolutely everything, took the final test, and completely failed. Then how would you feel?

catfight09 : I would always do good on tests; they weren't very hard, but the homework is extremely hard for some reason... Most of the kids in my class do terrible on the homework and still do pretty good on tests.

Whoops, I was talking about classwork, my bad. With that, then I sorta can see your frustration there. Whether or not I think that it's a good idea depends on whether or not you guys still went over the homework in class.

Wow, that really sucks. But maybe it'll teach y'all a lesson: even if it seems like you can just blow it off, it's never a good idea to do that. It'll come and bite you in the rear, never fear. If you all had been doing a fairly decent job all along, it never would have happened.

That's honestly better than at my school where you don't get graded on homework; but on tests! I have awful test anxiety and I always, ALWAYS do bad; but on the homework I seem to do just fine. This is unfair for me because if they marked the homework my marks would probably be a little more balanced out. It's rather upsetting to be honest.
Especially for math.
