I personally cant remember the last time I saw a good horror movie that was scary all the popular horror movies now are dumb and not scary like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Devil Inside me. All lame movies. The only good horror movies I can think of are pretty old.

To be fair, most people would not consider Paranormal Activity to be a horror movie. And Insidious wasn't a horror movie, either, that was a suspense/thriller that borrowed certain motifs from the horror genre, but the point of these movies wasn't to frighten you, it was to keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what's next. I never saw The Devil Inside me, so I can not vouch for that.

But yeah, in general, I completely agree that there aren't enough good horror films coming out lately. We just sort of seem to be in a slump culturally, where people just don't like to be scared that much. I think the last legitimate horror film I saw was Hostel back in 2005, and that wasn't really that good either. But the film industry sort of comes in waves like that. Every now and then, some one releases an incredible movie that everyone tries to emulate, and right now we're in the midst of a scramble to make the next Avatar, that's all.

To be fair, a lot of the good horror topics have been done already, so what's left is just an odd mash up of nonsense that's not really spooky. I can't recall any horror movies I've seen recently, but Insidious was pretty funny. I kind of felt like it was a joke sometimes because the effects and sounds/music and stuff... it was just so goofy and felt really misplaced. Maybe it was an independent film, they're really offkey sometimes.

But in response to the "new" horror movies suck, I'm conflicted because you're right, but also a lot of old horror movies suck as well. I tried watching Hellraiser two days ago actually, I'd heard it was one of the classics. But I was really disappointed, I didn't even finish watching it because I got distracted. Also a lot of the old horror movies only seemed scary because you watched them when you were younger. I watched Halloween when I was pretty young and it scared the pants off me, but anymore it's just any other horror movie, except looks crappier. Not that it's not still a good movie, but horror movies are just hit or miss in general, regardless of when they're made.

Well, we've been doing the horror thing since film began. Nowadays, we've seen most of the things that can actually scare us, so it's kinda just the same thing. Horror films in general aren't that great anyways. And for some that think older horror movies are better than the new because they're scarier, that's usually because they saw them as a kid, in which you would almost certainly be scared. I mean, not many horror movies scared me as a child anyways. The only one s that comes to mind are Child's Play and Halloween.

In conclusion, it's not that new horror films aren't scary at all, it's because most of the criticism comes from the older people out there who have seen it all, and the horror thing in general has been done plenty of times already.

I think a lot of the problems with horror movies nowadays is that people have stopped being scared by them.  Once you watch enough scary stuff, you eventually stop being scared. I can only think of a few movies that have scared me. They were The Exorcist (the original 1973 version), A Clockwork Orange, and The Ring. Two of those are classics, and as I'm sure everyone knows, the Ring is not. The only reason those movies scared me was because I had never seen anything like them. The Exorcist was my first exorcism movie, Clockwork was just completely fubar, and The Ring was really creative with its horror. So I don't think the new horror movies are necessarily bad, it's just we've seen it all before so it's no longer scary.

If you think there's no good horror lately, you're looking in the wrong place.  Movies that are shown in American theaters are main-stream, made for audiences who don't want special scares and just like to see blood and violence.  Heck, there were great movies for horror just realeased in 2011.  Try these ones and tell me horror still doesn't exist now.  Most of these are not American.

I dont watch many horror movies so i cant really comment on that claim but im sure there are some pretty good ones.
I think most movie producers just dont chase the horror genre as much any more, right now comedy movies are pretty much the big thing, its like saying, tv sucks nowadays, i like the old programes, but thats because the world has switched to reality tv which is minddrain crap.

Honestly, there aren't a lot of horror movies in general that I actually like. Even some of the older ones are just gory, not even scary at all. I prefer jump out of your seat scary, not gross and gory.

I think the problem isn't the movies it is all relative.  The newest movies don't seem to be living up to your expectations, not because they are not good (though, some sucked), I still liked touristas though I don't care what yall say!  Back to your issue?, you could very well likely be, that in your nostalgic thinking, you are(though involuntarily creating an unrealistik expectation of the movies, cuz I know I do!!!!!!
Les's start w/a new thread called nostalgia induced thinking about games and movies or something like that.  Thanks for the idea SunflowerGaming .

Sincerely GN of Indy, USA home of 2012 superbowl,

P.S.  Seriously I gotta another thread idea for the vizzed market, though I bet it has been done b4.
BTW:.....next time...

What are you talking about? Paranormal Activity 3 and The Devil Inside were very scary.  If you did not watch them, then do not comment about them cause you would not know if they were scary or not.  If you did, then you are one of those people that does not get scared from any movie.
