This is a really hard topic to answer. I'll start with my favorite and least favorite things from each game.

Ocarina of Time Pros

Action starts very early
Great dungeon designs
Ocarina is used very well
Bosses are fun and memorable
If you somehow don't know where to go, Navi can actually kinda help
The use of time travel in the Spirit Temple
Epona

Ocarina of Time Cons

If you're replaying the game, Navi is very annoying in the first dungeon
On the N64, GCN, and Wii VC, aiming the bow/hookshot is horrible
Too easy
Simple story by today's standards

Skyward Sword Pros

Motion control is fun and works well
Great story
All items are used a lot, even after their respective dungeon
Side quests are fun
Link and Zelda seem like more realistic people with actual emotions
Dungeon designs are amazing
The 3 surface areas aren't too linear
Upgrading items is fun and useful
Bosses are fun to fight

Skyward Sword Cons

Fi is rather annoying unless you're truly stumped
The Sky doesn't have many places with things to do
Dowsing is annoying
Bird travel is kinda slow
Swimming is annoying

I like Ocarina of Time a little more, but Skyward Sword is the better game. I grew up with Ocarina of time, so that's why I feel like that, but I can admit when a game is better than one of my favorites.

Wow, a lot of people commenting on here without having actually even played through all of Skyward Sword.  Good job, really.

Anyways, this has been a question that has plagued my mind for a LONG time after beating SS.  I had beaten Ocarina Of Time long before this as a child, so naturally I, like everyone else, believed that it was the greatest game in the history of games.  Which it was.  It was revolutionary, it basically etched Nintendo's success even further in stone, and it defined a new generation of games.  But to compare the two games, you simply can't look at legacy because Skyward Sword doesn't have one yet.  It's been out for just over a year while OoT has been out for about 14 years.

With that out of the way, comparing the games is even still hindered by nostalgia.  I want to say OoT is the best game and nothing will ever change that because it WAS my childhood.  While it is difficult to ignore that, for the sake of fairness it must be.

Okay, now to get right to it.  I'm going to start and end this in the same way, by stating my opinion: Skyward Sword is the greatest Zelda game to have ever existed. I've played Ocarina Of Time many MANY times, but Skyward Sword's story had captured me much more than OoT.  I felt like a hero in both, but more so in SS.  And I cared about Zelda.  That was the biggest difference. In most other games it's just "Hey, go save this princess." but in SS, she's not a princess.  She's your best friend.  The game spends a chunk of time early on just getting to know her.  There was a friendship in OoT, but in SS it was deep.  You were friends all your life and you HAVE TO RESCUE HER.  This made many events in the game hit me, and hit me hard.

Annoyances: Both games had their own, don't get me wrong, but Skyward Sword didn't have one thing that OoT is infamous for: A Water Temple.  Each temple in SS was amazingly constructed and never seemed tiring.  OoT had that as well....minus the one  (or two depending on how you felt about Jabu Jabu)

And if all that isn't enough, than there may be one thing that puts SS over OoT.  Groose.  One of my favorite NPC's in all of Zelda.

jessmn2 : Yes! This is the kind of thing that I felt about these two games. It's hard to give a game a test of time when it's only been out for a year or two. This will probably be debatable for a long time, but it'll be interesting to see how people view this game in ten years time, and how they compare it to OoT.

Ocarina of Time is definitely a much better game, better story, less annoying sidekick, and in Skyward Sword Zelda just doesn't look like Zelda she looks absolutely ridiculous... Skyward Sword just doesn't feel like the traditional Zelda game as compared to Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time.

I love ocarina of time and I have it on my game cube but I have to go with skywards sword because the graphics are better and it has better adventure in it just can't be beat by The Legend of Zelda the ocarina of time.

I'm making many comparisons between the two, and really, Ocarina of Time triumphs, with a better control system, and a more beloved story.

Skyward Sword is beautiful, and personally has better gameplay.

Darkpower508 :

would you say that Skyward Sword was possibly made more for a Japanese audience.
And that could be why it is so different.

The instruments are definitely much more eastern, as are the environments.
Check out the Chinese dragons.

Sword legion :   It's certainly possible, the zelda games were pretty much made in Japan/China, and were often released there before the states and in Europe. In pokemon, the Magikarp was based on Chinese mythology, so it wouldn't be the first time that games were based on their county of origins myths. I'm not sure what to say, because the game was created in Japan/china in the first place. It would make sense if they wanted to make it more apealing to them to up the profits and spread the word of the game. maybe in this game it was just....more apparent.

Darkpower508 :

In earlier game the I noticed the religion was more based on Christianity than anything else.
( Yaaayyy for me!)

I mean environments were definitely more European. ya know?

I'll bet they made it for a Japanese audience more because it was the 25th aniversary.

Congrats to getting 50 replies to this thread! I am glad that there are still awesome threads like these.
