This topic was talked in school today and I wanted to share it with you all.  Do you think we have too much taxes to pay in this life? (For example:  water, electricity, heat, gas, local tax, state tax, etc.)

I do think we are overtaxed. Especially federally. People talk all the time about: "this is is crucial we need this and that". But its not the governments job to be taking care of us.

Let's take a look at the original question:

1.  Water, electricity, heat, and gas are not taxes.  They're services you pay for, perhaps from private companies.

2.  If you're taking "Are we overtaxed" and you mean the United States, the U.S. is at the top of list of industrialized countries for corporate tax burden but enjoys being in the bottom 1/3 for personal taxes.  We're taxed less, percentage-wise, than most other developed countries.

3.  According to the Office of Tax Analysis (U.S), the top 5% of wage-earners pay over 50% of all individual taxes.  Also, the 1% we hear about pay 33% of all income taxes from a dollar standpoint.

4.  The top 50% of U.S. tax-payers handled the burden of 96% of all income taxes from 2000-2002.  It's older data but I doubt it has seen radical changes.

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/whopaysmost.htm

My source: Take it for what it's worth.  It's public domain information.

Also, think about what you get for the taxes.  We have free public education up to 18 years of age.  We have a safe country with clean water in most locations.  We have social security and medicare/medicaid.  We have a country with police, fire departments, defense against other countries' attacks, and outstanding infrastructure in regards to roads, water, electricity, internet connectivity, and a stable government.  Our bi-cameral Congress, with president and judiciary branch, offer us a tremendous amount of freedom and safety compared to other countries around the world.

I think I get a good investment for my money.  You hear about illegals and non-citizens flocking to the U.S. for opportunity.  I don't hear about millions rushing to France, Russia, Finland, Australia, Japan, or other places.  They come here for a reason.

We're not overtaxed.  I feel comfortable with what I pay.

Marcmoney : Sales tax is perfectly acceptable to me too.  Our government allows us to have transactions with people we've never met and institutions we'll never see because they maintain laws about commercial activity.

I get taxed when I buy stuff but I "get to buy stuff."  Think about it.  You give your money to a computer somewhere with complete faith and trust you'll see the items you purchased.  That company knows they will get their money.  Without government, it turns into a 'trust' thing and that wouldn't work very well when there are thousands or millions of dollars on the line.

Again, I have no problem supporting government.

Well yeah I agree with you. It's unfortunate but because the U.S. keeps owing all of these different countries stuff, they keep increasing taxes in order to pay for the mistake that THEY made. It really isn't all that fair considering in a couple of years people won't make enough money a year to really be able to take care of their families. My social studies teacher even thinks that the U.S. will be taken over by the Mandarin people so he told us to learn the language as soon as we could.

mandarin is the most common language in china, though there are many others.
No,i dont think you are, but i think you waste tax money, blowing it all on a swollen military budget.

"Is the government overtaxing us?" That's a difficult question to answer, because not everyone in this country is taxed in the same way. For instance, in my tax bracket, I actually get more money out of taxes than I pay in. Crazy, huh?

On the other hand, income tax is actually unconstitutional, but good luck telling the IRS that!

I don't think we're being overtaxed. Federal taxes aren't very high and state taxes go towards things that usually matter to us. Right now, the taxes aren't that high, so it doesn't bother me all that much.

I think it is a question of "how much are we benefitting from taxes" and not "are we being overtaxed". If you look at some countries like Sweden or France, they pay more taxes percentage wise, but they generally have a higher standard of living ( less poverty for instance). What it really comes down to, as other people have eluded too, is what the governments spend the money on. I don't have the numbers but America most likely spends more money per capita overseas than any other country. This in my opinion eats up too much of the money that could be better spent benefiting your own country.

Take a look at this chart that shows Child Poverty rate (as a means to partially show standard/quality of living). It is worth while to note that this chart doesn't imply USA has the highest child poverty in the world, just out of the selected first world countries.

Comparing the differences in taxes between the highest, USA, and lowest, Denmark on this chart , Denmark has significantly higher taxes.  Americans pay 0- 35% and in federal and 0-12% in state taxes while Danish people pay 36%-67% in income tax. I am not necessarily saying Americans should pay higher taxes, but more so that the government should choose to spend the money wisely.

I think that there needs to be some adjustments made to the tax system, but ultimately I think the main problem is that salaries have remained stagnant over the past several decades, and everything is so expensive. it's hard for the average family to get ahead, and not live paycheck to paycheck.

Jordanv78 : Stagnant salaries definetly don't help out. They always seem to be the last thing to increase during times of inflation.

I not so much worried how much we are being taxed as to what how well we're using it.  I think our government could be more efficient with our tax dollars and NOT use some of the money for programs the government doesn't need to do.  An example is insurance people shouldn't be forced to buy insurance the whole purpose of it is that "in case something happens" your covered.  Now if your frugal with your money and have an emergency fund I don't think you need it.  Besides the insurance companies make money of you so I think you would save money this way unless your just that reckless. So, If our government used its taxpayers money carefully and privatize things it doesn't need to control I think this country would be better off.  On a side note can we please have the government remove all idiotic warning labels and instructions ( ex. I just got a city trash can that has instructions on how to move it says" tip handle toward chest and push. Warning do not burn trash in can") so can we please get rid of them and have natural selection do its job. (also want see what new categories will come up in the Darwin Awards)

HIM on suomalainen, viisihenkinen rockia ja metallia soittava yhtye. Yhtye itse kuvailee musiikkiaan ”love metallic”, kriitikot usein alternative rockiksi, hard Rockiksi, goottirockiksi, metallic tai popiksi. Bändin genreä on vaikea määrittää lähinnä yhtyeen tasaisen musiikillisen tyylivaihtelun vuoksi. Tosin suurin osa yhtyeen tuotannosta on yhdistellyt raskassointisia kitaroita popahtavin melodiakierroin. HIM saavutti ensimmäisenä suomalaisena yhtyeenä Yhdysvalloissa kultalevyn albumillaan Dark Light (2005).[1] Yhtye on myös myynyt hopeaa muun muassa Isossa-Britanniassa Love Metal -albumillaan, sekä Yhdysvalloissa Venus Doomilla. HIM on kaikkien aikojen kaupallisesti menestynein suomalaisyhtye. HIMin levymyynti on karkeasti arvoituna noin seitsemän ja kymmenen miljoonan kappaleen välillä.[2] Yhtyeen johtohahmo on laulaja Ville Valo.
Yhtyeen suurimpia kappaleita ovat ”Join Me in Death”, ”Poison Girl”, ”Right Here in My Arms”, ”Wings of a Butterfly”, ”Killing Loneliness”, ”Your Sweet 666”, ”In Joy and Sorrow”, ”Wicked Game” (cover), ”Buried Alive by Love”, ”The Kiss of Dawn” ja ”The Funeral of Hearts”. Yhtyeen keulakuva Ville Valo on sanonut yhtyeen esikuviksi seuraavia kokoonpanoja: Kiss, Iggy and The Stooges, Iron Maiden, Type O Negative, The Sisters of Mercy ja Cathedral.

I believe that taxes are the best and most efficient way to fund the government. Although sometimes the rates may seem a bit excessive, one has to realize that without taxes, all publicly owned, government funded enterprises would cease to exist. The military, government education, hospitals, all infrastructure would disappear. The more you reduce taxes, the less the government has to spend on public amenities. There's also the fact that the US is trillions of dollars in debt, and that number is likely to rise exponentially if taxes are taken out of the equation or even reduced too much. From this you may draw your own conclusions. Either you get to keep your own cash and lose many public benefits, or you lose a little more so everyone can be a little happier. I personally believe that things are good as they are (to a point). I will admit that the world's economy is crap and soooo many countries are in debt, but eliminating taxes is not the way to go.

Did you know that 80% of the Senate has never had any course in economics? Also that if they lowered taxes they would get more income? ( This fact may sound weird, but the people spend more money if they have more, which give the government more money!)

There's not a bit of doubt in my mind when I answer that.. yes... we are overtaxed.  Of course, I think taxes are unbiblical, so there aren't many that would take my stance very seriously.

However, if we want to talk finances, I think it is UTTERLY ridiculous that 25% or more of my paycheck goes to taxes, and then I have to pay 10% sales tax on top of that.  Do you realize that's almost 40% of my paycheck being taken by the government? Ludicrous!
