I just got done watching this video on youtube of these little 9-10 year-old girls dancing to "California Girls". Doesn't sound too bad just hearing that part, right?  Well check this video out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soGn1iOFWbs

I watched this and I was repulsed.  The girls dance really well and they have promising futures in dance, but, and I'm sure a lot of the fathers on this site will agree with me, these girls are far too young to be dancing like this.  There's a difference between a fully grown woman dancing like this and a little girl.  Plus the clothes they are wearing are not clothes a little girl should be wearing.  I know when I was a kid my daddy wouldn't let me leave the house wearing shorts unless he thought they were long enough.  And he definitely wouldn't have let me dance around in a bikini top. Maybe I'm overreacting, but can you imagine if a pedophile watched this?

Let me know what you all think.  Especially you parents with little girls.

Surprisingly, one of the videos listed to the right was one that I saw just yesterday in English class. Some of the class had a presentation they had made on Toddlers and Tiaras --airs on TLC. Although I know it would not have been the best thing to do, I kind of wish I had recorded the discussion we had that show and videos like the one you linked.

There were actually some arguments that gave us ideas as to why these things have been allowed in today's culture. Keep in mind that I would not allow my daughter (if I had one) to do anything like that. One issue noted in the classmates' research was the the dads were either supportive of their daughters' choice to enter these competitions, or the dad was basically pushed aside by his own wife. There are cases when the child does not want to participate in these competitions, but the parents (most likely the mom) wouldn't take no for an answer. Basically this is the mom living her life through her daughter. The classmates did mention that these videos can be fodder for pedophiles.

Well, wow, they CAN dance.

But I agree, let kids be kids...one thing is when they practice dancing, then it's OK to me, but performing it like that?

World's gone crazy with all kinds of talent shows over the years, there seems to be a point of view that when you don't start young, you won't make it.

yep.
this disturbs me allot. I just think it is wrong how the parents let them dance in those clothes and that kind of way. It is just wrong for that age to be doing stuff like that.

Gross. I think that the parents should not let them do that. I would not let my daughter do that ever. Hell when she is 18 maybe I have no control over her then but until then I would not even let her think about it. That is sick and wrong.

NyanMario :

Please be a little more thought out with your posts

I have no real opinion on this. On the one hand I don't see anything wrong with it that we don't see everywhere in America, on TV or in reality. I'm kind of jaded to how evil everything is since pretty much everything is evil in a sense.

However, I am also not a father, so I'm not really sure if my opinion would change once I became one.

I guess in all essence, I'm kind of in the middle on this. It's evil, but nothing isn't evil anymore. Therefor it's hard for me to condemn it when there are far worse things on daily television.

legacyme3 : Stuff that is worse then some ten year old girls dancing for pedos? I mean really can you point out something worse? I sure as hell can't. The only thing worse I have seen on TV was about a girl who was 2 and her dad sold her out as a hooker. That is the only thing worse...

DOES THAT MAKE YOU SAY THERE IS SOMETHING WORSE!?!?!?!

billythekidmonster :

Except I didn't see it that way. I saw it as an expression of the song. So I didn't really see it the same way others would.

I flipped on TV and see people brutally beating the hell out of each other. For fun. If that doesn't teach violence, I don't know what does. There's no other way to look at that. It's not expression. It's beating the s*** out of each other.

I switched channels and saw definite implied sex. Compared to a couple girls dancing? Uh... yeah.

My point is, it's all about perspective. I don't see this video as what you saw it as, which is why my opinion differs from yours.

It's the people involved, watching or otherwise, that make it perverse or not IMO. The idea that this video of two little girls dancing (even were they naked) is perverse is not an objective fact. It is something which arises out of modern common opinion. Most little kids, unhindered, would dance around naked if allowed and think nothing of it. Does that make them perverts or bad or that anything about them dancing or being naked is bad? No. It is the adults, conscious of sexuality as they are, that turn it into something 'gross'.  It is also because we, as adults, KNOW that other adults are capable of this that we try to shelter our children from it by prohibiting what they do.

That said, I do not condone dressing little girls (or boys provocatively). There is no reeason for it and for the above stated reasons it is safest for the children. Children should also be taught to dress and behave conservatively from a young age... IMO... because it will help them function later in life as adults as well. I say this despite having mixed feelings about limiting children's ability to express themselves naturally. I feel it is wrong... for anyone to be inhibited from expressing themselves but... in the grand scheme of things it is a necessary evil. It keeps our society functional and solvent.

thenumberone : The nakedness was simply a way to make a point, and I wasn't making a statement about these girls in particular. It was a broad, general, statement about adult perception of these kinds of things... about WHY adults think that way... how children think about it... and my own personal opinions about conservatism. Re-read my statement careffully and you'll see that.

Annette : That was my point. Both pedophiles AND /normal people/ sexualize little girls when they make a big deal about them dancing like this. Mind... the normal people make a big deal about it because they know there are predators out there and the kids don't. I just think its a shame kids have to have sexuality imposed on them when they don't even understand it.

Who would do that? Do the parents want their kids to grow up into strippers, or say little kids that get kidnapped and raped by some pedophile? Plus, the girls probably don't know what they're doing, and if they did, that would be just as disturbing.

Ummmm... Things like this aren't sexualized unless people sexualize it. There's nothing wrong with little kids dancing around. Sure the dancing is a bit too sexual, but those are current "dance moves."
If someone makes a sexual comment about that, either they are a troll or a pedophile.
It's also true that shorty shorts are designed to show off the legs but dancers also need to have their legs free to move the best. Have you ever watched any of the dancing competitions, like dancing with the stars?  I'm pretty sure most of the women dancing on there wear skirts split high on the thigh or to the waist so their legs can be free to move the range needed.

They have amazing dancing skills for their age but I think the dance moves and song lyrics are inappropriate.

As for what they're wearing - I don't think it's inappropriate per-se but in the context of this it probably is.

Unfortunately they're also having fun dancing and to them it's probably very innocent. Sadly the adult lyrics and sexualised dance moves copied from adults makes the whole thing quite disturbing. They shouldn't be learning this stuff at their age.
