The United Nations estimated that the world population would pass the 7-billion mark on Monday (Oct 31st, 2011). npr.org has an video to help visualize how our population has accelerated to this from what was 1 billion in 1804 --that means our population has increased seven-fold in less than 200 years. Also, there has been a shift in demographics and fertility rates. Although experts can't agree, there is speculation that our world population will taper off around 10 billion by the end of the century. Check out the article and video and share any thoughts you have on this whether it be overpopulation, the changing demographics, etc.

We're all just tiny specks compared to seven billion. Gives you some serious perspective.

I heard it would reach 10 billion but I didn't hear the "taper off" part before.

... Now imagine if the Black Death hadn't killed off huge parts of the population.

the only reason people think the population will taper off is because there is a limit to how many people the earth can support. There is only so much land, water and food that we can have access to.

I personally think it's more of a lifestyle problem than a limited resource problem if that makes sense. A lot of the world is not set up to be efficient but instead we try hard to be affluent. Take more and use more than we could ever need.

That's really amazing that there is 7 billion people on this planet now, I wonder how long it would take to reach 8 billion.

Elara : well the black death caused most devestation in europe and europe isnt getting more populous anymore.
Also people combat things like that by having even more children.
Ironicaly the black death ended up helping europe economicaly.

Has anybody ever seen the movie Soylent Green? I haven't, I'm pretty sure most of you haven't, but I think we all know what happens in the end. I have a feeling that's what might happen in the near future. Of course, if everybody lead the American lifestyle, we would probably be able to eliminate several billion people. That video showed that North America didn't have many people, probably due to obesity, diabetes, AIDS, and other horrible things.
