History is important. Any kind of history is extremely important. As anyone whose studied history will tell us, there has been good times in our life and some pretty bad times. Imagine it's Christmas in 1982. You open the present to find this Atari 2600 game. You're excited, as you only have a few Atari games for the system. When you turn it on, you shut it off after 5 minutes of play only so you do your chores instead of playing your game, you thought it was that bad. Yet, when you got a copy, you're a part of a historical change in what video games would be. But, more on that later. Anyway, we're here to talk about a crappy game.
Graphics:
Aside from the title screen, the graphics are muddy and bland, even for the 2600. Animations were bland, models were crappy, and, again, aside from the title screen, everything graphically in this game isn't pretty to look at. 4/10.
Story:
The story follows the movie, which everyone knows and has seen. This category wont be expanded on much because, well, everyone knows the E.T story. 7/10.
Sound:
Believe it or not, this game features a nice chip-tune version of the E.T theme that's not to bad and isn't repeated to annoyance during gameplay, (*coughGhostbustersforNEScough*). Unfortunately, the sound is ruined because of the sounds during play. The sound that plays when you fall into pits is painful to listen to. And the other beeps and bloops aren't exactly peaceful to the ears. Aside for the chip-tune theme, the sound isn't exactly the reason you should be playing this game. 3/10.
Gameplay:
Just, wow. This game is WAY to overrated. The gameplay for this game isn't that bad. Basically, you play as E.T trying to go home. In order to do that, you have to find three pieces of a phone, and then find the random spot that the UFO lands, and have it pick you up. However, that's easier said then done. You have two enemies in this game. A doctor that takes you back to the hospital, and a FBI officer that, I'm not kidding you here, steals your items. That's one of the bad things about this game, the enemies really don't do anything but annoy you. Oh well, this gets a 6/10.
Interesting thing about this game:
Basically, this game made gaming what it is today. Don't believe me? Well, I have 100 words to convince you, lets start now. Any hardcore gamer, (AKA you,) knows that this game is one of the main causes for the Video game crash of 1983. So, you say, this game caused a crash, how did that change gaming? Simple, it started the fact that consoles need to retire. After the crash, the holy NES was birthed in 1985. The reason, (in my opinion,) it was made was to rebirth video gaming to bring it as more then a hobby. What caused this crash? This game.
Overall:
You should play this game solely for the fact its a game history changer. Is it the worst game ever? Probably, but its the worst game that has a purpose. 5.7/10 History is important.
