Do you believe the Mayan prediction of 2012 or do you believe in Revelations in the Bible?
Or do you believe in Ragnarok like I sort of do? (I combine all three really) But lets DEBATE this! Here's how it goes offer up some facts to be cross-examined and I'll rebut them or support them. Like a formal debate since I had an A in that class! lol
I'm going to allow you guys to start this debate off. So your topic is the end of life as we know it..(not to be grim) but just state your beliefs and if you want offer up some support to others using facts or just general agreement. |

I believe that no person will ever know when the end of the world is coming before it happens. I also know that the world will end in fire and so what will probably happen is that the sun will eventually die and take our solar system out with it. I am sure of these things (except for the sun part it could be any source of fire) because I am a christian and I have read the bible verses that have said this. I am sorry I don't remember the verses but if someone wants to know I could try finding them; or if someone else knows them please let me know. And even if I find the verses, the bible is still my only evidence (I know some people aren't christians and don't believe that it is a reliable source) so for those who don't believe the bible's reliability than Im sorry but thats all I got.

ICEman64 : I support that! But have you considered the Bible also says the dead will rise and their bodies will go to heaven? If you think about it heaven could be space and when the sun burns the earth technically everyone's bodies would be in heaven! lol

Mammals have a life expectancy of about 1 million years before a species dies out. The earth is 4.8 billion years old (not religious, science age). I think humanity will be long gone to other planets or will have been out-competed by other species before the end of the world. And end will be quiet. The sun will fizzle out, lose all its ability to create radiation to heat the earth and the earth will turn into a cold, frozen hunk of rock, wandering the universe for a long time.
I won't be around. The earth won't end next year, nor in 1,000 years. Humans can kill each other off but we cannot destroy the earth itself. |

warmaker : True but if you want to talk religion in a scientific way, think of this..if we left the earth wouldn't some God or Goddess try and stop us? So we could live in the hell of our own making?

DBDonald : I separate science from religion. I have a very eclectic taste of religion but I was raised Catholic. To me, the question about the end of the world is purely science. If humanity is wiped out it will come from natural or man-made causes. I believe if there is a supreme being or beings, they are not interested enough in only our race to cast our fates.
We're on our own. What happens after you die is a religious question. How the world ends is a science question. Sorry for the misunderstanding. |

DBDonald : Oh, snap! I thought it was debate, logic, news, religion accepted and not required.
Well, heck, in that case: I'm rooting for a Mayan God to unlease jaguars on the Earth. That would be exciting. Everyone talks about zombie apocalypses. How about a Mayan Jaguar Apocalypse? I don't know how well I'd do against rage-filled secular big cats. Honestly, I think God made us, did his thing and watches from above. He'll leave our destiny to us. But, when the chips are down and humanity really does seem to be destroying ourselves, we'll stand up as a human culture and survive. Humanity won't end. |

warmaker : I prefer the Norse's end of the world scenario known as Ragnarok where the souls of the dead sent to the underworld come back to earth in a boat made of their own finger and toe nails! (because they had centuries to grow them) There's more to the story but I don't think I should go into it because its real long! (DONT ANYONE DARE SAY THATS WHAT SHE SAID!) LMAO

Well...everyone says the Mayans said the world will end in 2012, so it will, but, i dont agree. Would you believe the people who made blood sacrifices to their "gods" could predict when the world ends. And, their empire started in like 500. to them, 2012 seemed like a loooooong way away. They thought, "oh, in 2012 we will make a new calander" they just chose a random date to end the calender.

DBDonald : Your layout makes your posts almost impossible to read. Also.. that's what HE said?
pieman9 : Mayans didn't do the blood sacrifice, that was the Aztecs. Honestly, I think the Mayans have the calendar ending in 2012 because they ran out of room. Just like I think that Nostradamus is a total crackpot. The world will not end next year, and I will be sitting there on the day after the winter solstice laughing my ass off at all the people that thought it would. warmaker : your interpretation of the forum is correct. I think he was asking you to humor him. And personally I think Mayan Jaguar Apocalypse beats Zombie Apocalypse any day. Also, based on what you said about your beliefs I would say you are a Deist in some form. Personally, I agree with the scientific version of the end of the world. Humanity will kill itself via nuclear war or some other atrocity long before the world itself ends. (last edited by Elara on 03-03-11 10:58 PM) |

The world will never end unless earth doesn't exist. When the dinos died it wasnt the end of the world, same concept applies when a asteroid hits and kills all humans
Just because all humans are dead doesn't mean the world is dead too.

warmaker : I think I like most of your style.
I hope I don't need to go into a lot of detail about the whole Mayan calendar thing. I've already debunked 2 threads a while back about how 2012 is NOT the end. The Mayan calendar stopped at that date because it's the end of a "cycle". Furthermore, the time after that date is one of a new age, which is pretty much the same as OUR calendar going from December to January of the next year. As a couple other members here said, humans would kill each other off long before the Earth is gone, save for an asteroid. But even then there will be people that survive. For how long I don't know, but no single disaster can ever wipe out an entire species. It would be the conditions afterward that determine that. It should be known that should we ever get to colonize other planets in the distant future, humanity will have reached a state of immortality. |

Okay, before I debate this, I'd like to know why the Mayan calendar is so accurate to everyone--but not the Revelation book in the Bible...I personally think that most 2012 Supporters have never read Revelation....

I don't believe it will end in 2012. It was supposed to in 2000 and nothing ever happened. What ground does it have for ending in 2012. I believe the world will end when it is good and ready.

I believe in revelations. No one will know when the end comes. God and any other theory is all belief. It is true that the sun will eventually run out because of entropy, but I don't think that the earth will last that long anyway.

Hmmm...all this discussion about 2012...I'm surprised most people didn't talk about the guy in California who is making a lot of fuss about May 21, 2011 to be Judgment Day based on his calculations in the Bible.
