Does anyone know the true reson why link is green and why not purple or yellow or teal

I don't believe there is any real meaning to it. I think it's just a color that the developers chose.

Probably because it's an elfish looking color and makes it seem mystical and all that jazz. Yellow, purple and teal would be horrible choices for link, they just don't fit the character and his background.

the main reason, i think according to its actual storyline in the main series Zelda games:

link grew up thinking he was a kokiri, although he was a hylian given to the great deku tree because of the crisis that happened before ocarina of time (rumors say that skyward sword is that exact timeline of the previous crisis that made link's mom send him over to the great deku tree)

i also assume that kokiris wear green to symbolize honor and loyalty to the great deku tree. They are, after all, the children of the forest. Link's other colors are more based on the game they're present in. but since ocarina of time was the first main series, my theory seems to be quite accurate. Now the kokiri's evolution from ocarina of time to wind waker... im not so sure how that happened

if anyone knows how zoras -> rito, children -> plant things... and how octoroks in skyward sword are on land... please tell me in a reply! and what is the name of those big fish that resemble a sea like peehat in wind waker?

Oh, I also think that kokiri's are basically elves with fairies. and green is the color that symbolizes elf features. So thats why link wears green to so he can fit in with the other kokiri children. hope i gave good info for an answer! who knows, maybe the developers were just thinking about trees when they were designing link's character!

Link is supposed to be part of an elvish race, or fae, right?
He lives in a little tree house thing, and elves have a close affinity with nature and the earth, and thus they dress in green.

Didnt robin hood wear green? Probably has to do with the fact that he is always around trees and plants.

I'm guessing its because of one of two reasons, or both.

1) Green symbolizes the planet, and Link grew up in the forest, and lived there. Showing that he is a child of the forest, or human of the forest. however you want to say it.

2) Green is also symbolized as peace, to many people. And link brings peace to the land and vanquishes evil, so this could be a good possibility.

like most of people think green is the clothing of kokoris that link grew up with

another explanation would be that green represents courage ( the sacred stone of courage was green) and almost all links have the triforce of courage and others have to find them(wind waker and zelda 2) the only 3 don't had the triforce of courage involved (the original since the second is the same link and had to find the triforce of courage other don't had because the storyline said that gannon had all three another in the spirit tracks )

Link's environment is centered around the color green mainly because that's where he lives, in a forest rich with trees and bushes. If I had to make a good guess why Link wears green I'd say it's his favorite color and the fact that he has pointy ears like an elf (yes I know he is Hyrulean) makes him look like Santa's elves which represents the giving and good nature of Link.

Link is an elf-fairy boy, who lives in the forest. His clothes are meant to match the forest, to give off a natural sense.

I think the green is supposed to symbolize nature. As far as I can tell, each and every Link came from humble beginnings: i.e., he had to know nature to live. It also emphasizes the forest; most of the Links came from a forest.

I'm guessing because, the goddess of courage, Farore, was green, and since Link has incredible courage and wields the Triforce of Courage... you get it.

It's because when light hits Link's clothing the red spectrum is absorbed and green is reflected.

So basically Link is some sort if Courageous Plant Elf? Cool.

Anyway I think they made it so it would just look pleasing to gamers.
Notice how almost every Nintendo series' main character has a different color?

Plus he's an elf... and when I think elf I think green.

i think its symbolism. Link is from Kokori forest and that would represent earth in Hyrule hence green thats why Gorons are red; fire. Zora's blue; water and the such

he is an elf and elfs are green. that and because they are the children of the forest and the forest is green that might be why

In the beginning, they either wanted him to look like an elf (with his pointed ears) or kinda like robin hood (because he also wears those kind of clothes, although not the hat). Whatever it is, each thing is green, so they made link green.

What would've been the Kokiri's population's response to Link being blue or red? While them being forest people in green tunics! REMEMBER, in Ocarina of Time, the Kokiri ridiculed Link because he didn't have a fairy, let alone him being the same height and color to everyone in there.

Although, in every Legend of Zelda game, Link either starts out with a green tunic, or receives them briefly later on the game (ex. Spirit Tracks). I think it's because it's a 'symbol' of Link, the guy in green saving the princess and the land of Hyrule (and some other lands too).

Or at least, that's my opinion.

It is because he grew up in the koriki forest and wears there tradition clothing. But u can change it in ocarina after getting so far in the game. (blue/red)

Link is green because he's from the forest, if you ever played Ocarina of Time you would know this.

If you walked into a forest, what color clothing would you expect the people to wear? Have you ever thought how silly it would look if the forest people wore red and blue? That is probably why they chose green, cause it suits the forest scene.

I think he has to be green, because he's always walking in the forest and he needs camoflage to surive, if he didn't wear green he'll be easily spotted by some creatures and easily die.

Well, remember that the Legend of Zelda came out on the NES before the Kokori Forest and everything was thought up. Although I don't think there was a special reason why the developers chose green in the first place.

I'm guessing it is because he was raised as a Kokiri and the place is green (makes a lot of sense).  If he was still in Hyrule, he would probably be blue (which looks cool on him, especially with the shield on him).

I would think he is green because of what he was supposed to represent, some elf thing.
When I think of elves, I usually think of the color green. Perhaps that's what the developers thought?
Link lives in an environment full of nature, so I would guess they picked green maybe because of the nature thing.

Uhm... The green on Link's tunic doesn't represent anything. It isn't a symbol of his Kokiri heritage (Because in every game except Ocarina of Time, Link has NO relation to the Kokiri) and it doesn't symbolize the planet or the fact that he's fighting for good or anything like that. It's not because he's an elf--because he's not

His tunic is green simply because Link lives in a pre-industrial society. His clothes are hand-made in Hyrule, and green is one of the most common dyes available.

Lazlo Falconi : Really? cause when I played OOT, after you beat the Forest Temple, the deku tree sprout grows in front of the the Original and tells Link how he was raised as a Hylian at first, and then after the mother dies from an illness, the Deku Tree take Link in as a Kokiri, at least I thought it did mean something....

Markeith21 : Yeah, but that story of Link's adventure was made way after Links tunic was colored green.

I'm pretty sure there's no real MEANING towards it.

It's just like how Mario is red.

However I think green is the best color option for him. Red would also be kind of cool but I think Link is/should be green.

I think it was chosen mainly because he was elfish in appearance, and it fits him so well I can't imagine them wanting to change it.

Also, an interesting fact about the color green: it is the most easily visible color to the human eye. I doubt that this has anything to do with Link's color, but you never know.

I think green looks fine on him . I'm use to it so I don't
have any problems with it I do like when they put different
tunic's in the games though . I don't think there is any real 
reason to why he wears green . 

When I first met Link (when I was young), on the first Legend of Zelda game, I had a thought that Link looked like Peter Pan, because of the green clothes.

So I would say (certainly is not this), taht Link was probably based on Peter Pan.

It was probably just at random if anything. If you notice, Link also has (IIRC) two other colored suits, on being brown-ish red, and the other white (My memory is a bit off and I've had little sleep, not to mention I'm too lazy to google the info right now. If I'm wrong, just summon me for my correction edit).

Like most things in the game industry, they probably want the reason to be whatever you want it to be, and have no official answers up for that reason. That, or the question isn't that popular yet and it hasn't gotten to the developers' attention, Nya~.

IMO, they probably chose Green due to the color Green symbolizing Peace, which would be a very fitting symbol for him.

Another possibility is that it was one of the better color choices they had on an 8-bit color palette, which backs up why he also has a dark red and white tunic available.

Or maybe like the majority of people here think, maybe they chose it because a stereotype for Elves is that they where green tunics, which is one of the ideas I find least likely, along with the Ocarina of Time explanation for no other reason than what was explained by Lazlo earlier, Nya~.

EDIT:: Also, I saw a few times in this thread the suggestion that he was based off of Peter Pan. Honestly, while this goes with what I think of about the elf story (Least likely), it is a bit interesting, and actually does seem that way at times. For instance, like everyone here is suggesting, the clothes. For something that probably wouldn't have been mentioned at all with this idea, he fights his Shadow in the second game, which is much like how Peter Pan has troubles with his Shadow as well. Truly, at the moment, those seem like the only (blatant) similarities they have in common, but there are probably hidden ones throughout the game most likely that nobody has noticed yet, which can further this idea a bit more, Nya~.

Actually it's because He is based heavily off Peter Pan. Let's take a look 
 
 They are both instantly good with weapons and musical instruments 
 
 They Both wear green 
 
 They both have Fairy's 
 
 They both save maidens from evil 
 
 So that is why link wears green.

So, yeah...

To anyone who said it was based off Peter Pan, they were correct.
It was confirmed in an interview with the devs and stuff, which you can find somewhere online.

Anyways, since this was more of an open question rather than a "Give your thoughts on why Link might be Green since we all don't know!" (Even though we do know now), I guess I'll just close this, Nya~.
