Yeah, this is big on the news lately. The kid responsible is in police custody. He shot the Representative and a few others including a 9 year old girl who died after being shot.
You can read about it: http://www.havasunews.com/articles/2011/01/09/news/doc4d29456296c2c232183323.txt http://www.npr.org/2011/01/09/132782771/giffords-a-centrist-a-fighter-a-public-servant (last edited by septembern on 01-09-11 10:22 AM) |

I saw this and was sickened.... I don't understand what this was supposed to accomplish? This woman might end up brain dead or in a permanent coma or paralyzed or who knows what.
And the comments on the news articles are even worse. Everyone blaming everyone else for this instead of blaming the one person responsible for it. The person pulling the trigger. It's his fault this happened.... not Sarah Palin, or Obama, or Bush, or Jesus, or anyone else people have tried to blame. |

Yeah I saw this all over the news today!
Poor innocent peoples lives taken away from one kids troubled life. This story is sad....the politician that survived won't ever be able to do what she loved again because the part of the brain that was ruptured is associated with speech. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones over a stupid pointless act. |

DNG : I think he was a "truther" and similar stuff to that. He "distrusted" the government according to one article I read....
I think killing a bunch of people in an attempt to kill a congresswoman and judge is a little more than distrusting the government. Criticism of government is fair and I do it all the time, but killing politicians is not the answer if you're looking for positive government reform. This will only make politicians more remote and cut off from the average person than they are now. |

This is what happens when you let the ban on assault weapons lapse. I think the whole ordeal is sickening and the guy should be put on death row asap, but at the same time I want to b****-slap every politician I have seen interviewed so far on the subject. I have never had so much Christian rhetoric shoved down my throat by politicians before and I am honestly offended by it. So the guy was an atheist... he was also a conspiracy nutcase... I think that had more to do with the shooting then his religious beliefs. They keep talking like being an atheist means that you are amoral... and I have news for them, morals are not tied to religions. Just like not being Christian doesn't mean that I don't have the same morals. Killing is wrong, no matter what supernatural being you do or do not follow, so don't try to force-feed me some bulls*** saying different.

Elara : I liked your comment about this on facebook and I agree with you. Religion does not have a copyright of moral behavior. And I agree that the guys political beliefs (along with his mental state/capacity) had more to do with this shooting than his religious (or lack there of) beliefs.

People are blaming it on Sarah Palin or the leftists.. and they wonder why this country is in the toilet
It goes to show the shooter is more sane then most people commenting on the articles.
Really, I think the shooter is concerned with his rights and where America is going. I don't care if he was a liberal like people claim that really has nothing to do with it. He knows this congresswomen well... there are records showing he has been in touch or following her since 2007 and maybe even earlier. On the outside it accomplishes nothing but who knows what this event will bring out in politics. I know there will be politicians out there who will use it in order to progress their own agendas. From what I read he said something about a new currency and that people are being mind controlled and brainwashed... which in a way he is 100% right. But I don't know what that has to do with the congresswomen, I think he was just obsessed with this lady and something she did pissed him off. If it had to do with governments new currency and mind control I think he would have tried aiming for a higher target in my opinion but since he knows this lady pretty well I think its something personal between him and the congresswomen. He is actually more sane (maybe I should use the term awake) then the average American... he just let his temper and his obsession with this lady get to him is all. |

I heard about this on the news today. It's quite sickening. And I agree, even though Sarah Palin completely fails at everything she does it's not her fault this happened. It's the shooter's fault. Are people these days seriously that retarded? I feel sorry for the 9 year old girl and her family, like she was killed because of some insane douchebag who wanted to kill a politician? That's....sad. Both sad as in cry sad and sad as in pathetic sad (on the killer's part). I think the guy should be gassed, to be totally honest.

I'm not sure how well he knew this congresswomen and her supporters but he really seemed to have picked the right time for the attack if it was politically motivated:
1) Its in Arizona where a bunch of political crap has been spewing out lately 2) He killed a judge 3) He killed a girl who was born on 9/11 4) He almost killed a congress women Maybe its just coincidence... but it does have a lot of politics and government involved thats for sure. What is weird about the 9 year old girl is if you add the date 1/8/2011 it = 9/11 or if you take the girls age and date it also = 9/11. And since he is a conspiracy theoriest I thought I would generate one myself who knows it could give some explanation behind it. |

I don't live anywhere near Tuscon, Arizona, but I still am pretty mad about the whole situation. It's sick... just sick. |

They guy was an anarchist, not a leftist. He believed a bunch of crazy conspiracy theories (the Amero doesn't exist, RFID is not mind control, etc). Congresswoman Giffords was doing her job and was getting the public involved by holding a congress on the corner event and this guy walks up with an automatic weapon and opens fire. He was kicked out of school and told to get a psych evaluation, how the f*** did he get a gun?
People are blaming Palin because of the rhetoric she and the extreme rightwingers have been spewing about "reloading" and specifically because she had a cross-hair map that had one of the marks square on Giffords' district. She took it down after the shooting and has made no comment condemning the shooting last I checked. Then you have Glenn Beck saying things like she is a messenger of peace and love, and that she should find protection for her family because if she died "the Republic would collapse" (saw it myself on television, he actually said it). It is bulls***. This isn't the fault of just the right or the left, though granted most of the gun-imagery rhetoric has come from the right... this is the fault of the entire country for being completely unwilling and unable to have a civil conversation about anything! Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean that they are "evil", it means they are an individual with their own experiences and ideals. I honestly do not know what has happened to this country in the last few decades. Members from opposite sides used to be able to work together for a common goal, what happen to that? It is depressing how badly we have fallen, and this is just another thing that proves it. |

I found a youtube channel that uploaded all the videos he had made. Half the time I'm not even sure what the guy is talking about (and he often repeats the same thing over and over).
Unfortunately, people are again using this to attack the second amendment. Though I agree anyone who is known to be mentally unstable should not be able to own a gun. That said, I haven't heard much about the weapon. It may not have been his. Also, I had read that it was a semi-automatic glock 19 (a pistol). I don't think it was a fully automatic weapon. Even worse, hands down the most sick twisted thing that gets me riled up is the Westboro Baptist Church saying they're going to protest at the 9 year old girl's funeral. Anyway, if anyone wants to see the youtube channel, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/user/Classitup10#p/a/u/0/7uRjwPWaxiY. (last edited by soxfan849 on 01-11-11 05:32 PM) |

The main thing that they are focusing on is that he had a 30 round magazine clip, which until the assault weapons ban lapsed in 2004 was illegal to own. The guy was taken down when he stopped to reload... if that ban hadn't lapsed and his magazine only had 10 rounds imagine how many people might have been spared.
Now, don't get me wrong, I support the 2nd Amendment, but I also support gun laws because there are nut jobs out there that do s*** like this. Honestly, I think that a psych evaluation should be required to buy a gun. We make our armed forces and police go through them before we issue them weapons, so why not private citizens? It is already law that if a person is deemed a danger to themselves or others that they are not allowed to own a gun, so why not make people prove it? From what I understand you are correct on what gun he had, and it was still one that would have been banned before 2004. In addition, Giffords owned the same kind of gun at home. The fact that it wasn't a fully automatic weapon doesn't mean it isn't an assault weapon, and while I don't know what should be done about assault weapons I can fully understand and support renewing the ban on those 30 round clips for civilian use. Latest update on the Congresswoman's status is that she is stable and responding to stimuli when the wake her up, but they won't know the extent of the damage for a few more days. |

Yeah, I was mistaken on the fully auto part, thanks for catching that.
So, in related news... remember Westboro Baptist Church? Yeah, they have announced that they are going to picket the funerals of the victims. These people sicken me! But, there is a ray of light... the people of Tucson are not standing for it and are rallying to keep them away. On top of that, Arizona is looking to make it illegal to protest funerals, making it a misdemeanor. I approve and wish that all states that have not already done so follow suit. Funerals are a private matter, and the last thing that grieving family members and friends need is to see these bottom-feeding scumbags posing as "good Christians" holding signs saying "God sent the shooter, be ye thankful". Ugh, just typing that makes me need to take a shower. Full article here: http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/01/11/arizona.funeral.westboro/index.html?hpt=T2 Edit: spelling... damn Tucson and spellcheck not catching my errors.
