Hi,

I was curious if anyone on Vizzed watches TV via online streaming sites, (Livestream, Justin.TV etc.) I have found sites like this quite useful for my work as it has allowed me access to fight cards that I would not otherwise have access to here in the US and thus have made it easier for me to cover.

I particularly find good use out of sites that those on my PS3. I have been having problems gaining accessing some sites recently after going through some connection problems. My question is do any of you watch television via online streaming sites and if so do you have any advice as to which ones are best for the PS3 that doesn’t require plugins?

Thanks

Yes I do. I usually use Youtube, Hulu, and torrents, although technically torrents aren't streaming.

I watch the majority of my TV shows online nowadays. I mainly use Hulu (love that site) and YouTube. I also have Netflix and I watch the DVDs of tons of TV shows there as well.

Jordanv78 : I have heard of Hulu but have never really checked the site out. I heard that Hulu isn’t really like most streaming sites because it has deals with networks and such where as other sites are mostly independently broadcast and such.

As I said I’ve found it particularly useful for my work as a boxing writer because it allows me far greater access to cards overseas which are in most cases not available on US Television so I take full advantage of access if I can. I’ve even gone as far as paying fees to watch webcasts of cards on occasion.

I take my work very seriously so often times depending on the time difference I can be up at 4am watching a webcast of a fight card from anywhere in the world regardless of the day of the week.

The reason I really like using my PS3 for streaming is I have a bad back so if I can pull it up on there with no problems it makes it more comfortable for me where I’m not sitting at my desk with a headset on for anywhere from four to six hours if not longer depending on the particular card.

jmc1097 : What bothers me about torrent sites is you never know what your downloading and that has always made me a little reluctant to test those out. I take pride in my work ethic but if you ever come across a virus they can be very expensive to get rid of. I remember one time I got a virus while doing an internet search and it cost me almost $500 to get it out the same day so I could make deadline for a magazine I was working for. The funny thing about it is I have pretty solid security and I still ran into the problem.

bvd1022 : Yeah Hulu is pretty great. They have new episodes of all sorts of shows the day after they air on TV. Also there are TONS of classic shows on the site as well.

The quality of the videos are just like watching it on TV which makes it all the more enjoyable.

I will occasionally watch some TV online. I will mainly if I miss my favorite shows and I am really bored or if I just want to watch a show that we don't get in america like some of the anime shows.

I use mostly YouTube to watch new episodes of Bleach and Kekkaishi dubs. I go to AnimeFreak.tv if YouTube doesn't have the newest episode up when I want to watch it. Megavideo is supposed to have a ton of videos too. I also use Hulu if I fall behind on some of the regular primetime shows like Glee or the Mentalist.

BNuge : I use YouTube often mostly for nostalgia. I like looking up stuff from New York TV stations from when I was a kid. It’s a hell of a good way to make one feel very old and in my case extremely homesick… I would love it if there were a website that I could use where I could watch those channels via live stream.

WWOR-TV and WPIX-TV were my personal favorites… In addition to New York Met and Yankees games both stations were great for old sitcoms and even movies you may never have heard of. This was back in the days of independent TV stations long before both of them became affiliates for either The CW or MyNetwork TV.

I wish that both of those labels would go and those independent stations could get back to producing the great content that I remember from my youth. I can’t tell you how many nights I spent watching Morton Downey Jr. or, of course baseball games. I miss those days greatly.

big fat cat : Torrent sites are basically sites that people upload files of content for other users to download. I have friends of mine that frequently use torrents to watch sporting events and such but as I said you never really know what you’re downloading despite what it may be labeled and that has always made me stay away from those sites and go toward sites where you can find streams of broadcasts. As I said it’s great for fight cards taking place outside of the United States. The only thing that I occasionally deal with if I can’t find a feed coming from the UK of course is non-English feeds but it’s still a great resource for writers who otherwise wouldn’t have access to cover the cards.

billythekidmonster : What’s funny sometimes is you can come across something that odds are you probably have seen in the United States and it’s amusing to see where the foreign broadcasts edit certain things.

big fat cat : Oh I knew that… I’m from New York and firmly believe that we NY’er’s invented the concept of sarcasm. I was just adding to the humor brother by giving the straight laced response…

bchawk88 : I know the feeling the NFL package on DirecTV is way too expensive so on occasions I can’t watch the Giants or Jets I try to find a stream of it online. It sucks for lack of a better term but I think it’s becoming a new trend for people who can’t afford to either buy tickets or can’t afford the package. In this economy I don’t think you can blame people frankly.

I live in Florida so a good majority of the Tampa Bay games have been blocked out due to the NFL’s blackout rule restricting television for non-sell out games in home markets. I think the rule is ridiculous as no other professional league has a rule like that or even similar to it. So there have been stories on the news here about Tampa fans going online to watch the games since they can’t afford to buy tickets.

I myself haven’t been to an NFL game since 1995 in the old Tampa Stadium when the Bucs played the Jets in an exhibition game. If I were living up north I would be trying to get into the new Meadowlands Stadium. Someday hopefully.

ronaldo7 : I have heard that Hulu is good for watching premieres, I’ve never really thought of it though. I have a DVR and I make good use of it so I never really have had to go looking for a new show online or at least the ones that captivate my interest. I guess I’ve been lucky so far that the shows that I watch haven’t conflicted with each other.

superninjamonkey777 : I like that site! When I still had AVG and my internet was slow as poop, that was the only site that I was able to watch videos normally without any lag for some reason.

I primarily stick to the TV and Youtube.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
