Lets use this thread for discussion of Flash and action scripting.

If anyone has questions about the language or the program 'Adobe Flash', someone may be able to help you. Also, for those who know alot about it, can give the rest of us tips, tricks and pointers.

I know the program pretty well, I barely know the language though, just the simple stuff, so I may be able to answer questions. For sure, bigbob would be able to answer many questions.

ps-if anyone is at an advanced or intermediate level of action script, you may have a chance to becomming staff if your up for it

For those who wana know, im a flash maniac, but i havnt really done anything big. My sites down for now, but soon ill rebuild it (in flash!!!). Im also working on the vizzed snake game, i didnt make it, just mod it.

Websites made in Flash are much much cooler than ones made in PHP, although PHP allows for more interactions. Learning both would be the best bet, but if you haven't the time, than I guess it's up to you as to what you want in a programming language.

BIgBob, I need to find a time that your on while I am, I have some questions about Flash, I suddenly just got stuck and confused on somethin that doesn't make sense to me in action scripting

I guess it would make more sense to ask it here, just hopefully one of you will be able to help me out with this....here goes


There's several things I do understand but not 100% sure on, if anyone could explain these with as much detail as possible and give as much of an example as possible, it'd be very appreciated.
I'm also willing to give out 750 - 1000 Viz to whoever can fully help me out with these questions and answer them to the fullest extent.

1) Variables are containers which hold information, right? And information that gets sent to variables are called parameters, right? If not, please explain.

2)What exactly does a trace do? and what is it capable of? I know that it sends out information, but that's about all i know. Please explain this a little.

3)Functions...I know what they are, but I'd like more detail about them, and I would really appreciate a good example of how and when this would be used.

4)Most importantly, what is a listener? Please, explain this as much as possible, and also give a good example of this.


5)I also have a sample peice of code which I was suppose to put into a frame

1) Yes variables are containers which hold information. I'm pritty sure parameters is the stuff that the variable holds. Did you read about the differnet types of variables?
The main 3 are string, number and boolean. They work like this.
Type------------Can Be-------------Defined By
String----------Anything-----------var a = "str";
Number----------Any real number----var a = 3;
Boolean---------True or false------var a = true; or var a = false;

2) Trace only works in the actual Flash MX program, like when your previewing the clip. Its usually used for when you have variables or other things, and you not sure if there working fully. Try this.

Math.floor() rounds the number in the bracket to the lowest number. For example

trace(Math.floor(5.9999999));

These both return 5.
Math.random() give a random number, in my case, 1 to 100, but I think it might actually be 0 to 99...

If you went back and wrote

Code:

trace(Math.Floor(Math.Random()*100));

Notice how the 'floor' and 'random' are spelt with capitals. This returns this error.

Error:

3) Functions are just .. functions, like groups of code that can be called. I'll use some examples from the previous question.

The 'num' up in the brackets is used when i call the variable. So if i write rand(8), it'l put 8 in where ever i wrote 'num'. I hope this is what you ment about functions.


4) Im not 100% sure bout listeners. I found this in the help file.

From what i can tell listeners.. listen. This example will trace 'You pressed a key' when you press a key, and keep tracing it. And it traces the other thing when you release the key. Thats about all i know about listeners.

5) From what i can tell.. that opens a remote file into flash... Try this bit of code.

That loads the vizzed intro into flash. What did you actualy want your myMCL thing to do? (Guessen MCL means movie clip loader)
The 5 at the end of the loadClip function is apparently where it loads to... But i've never really used it before.

Question number 1. Tell me about the free .TK thing. Its a free domain name? And then you get somone to host your file? LIke Bravnet or somthing? A domain name is somthing that you pay for that the systems reroutes into your isp, or the isp of the website you want. But .TK is a free one? I'll prob just google it anyways.

2. Did you download the flash program for free? Illegally? Where can I get it?

3. Is flash different that most programming languages or HTML in that the code is owned by a company? Or is flash universal?

Some of the games are very short, and other are probably quite longer. It's all about the luck of the draw, some could be 2 hours, and other might be as long as 6. I doubt any would be close to 6 hours though, I'm sure there all around 3 or 4.

We could make an RPG game in flash. If you have Vizzed-Lands or Vizzed Adventure or somthing, and evry1 starts off as level 1 (different stats to profile), then we can port the vizzed battle system to work with it.

If we ever were to make an RPG game in flash, it'd be a game based on Vizzed Ville or somethin, where it's based on a town, and everyone saves up Viz to get a house in the town, and items and there's alot of stuff to do in the town, such as go to the battle arena and train. And you could also go on missions or journeys, whether by yourself or with others, and go off to fight monsters, or spammers or flammers or hackers.

Okay, I'm here to say that you can program Flash for FREE (Not $700), if you go to Open Source Flash.org...

All you need is an IDE (Integrated development environment) which should include the vector editor, library, and timeline editor... and A Compiler, which would take your completed timelines and the resources attached to it, and package it all into a SmallWebFormat Flash file.

The Actionscript editor is not necessary, you can just use notepad.
The Help feature isn't necessary, you get most of your help online anyways.
The Debugger isn't even necessary, because it breaks after your flash files get too big anyways. Write good code and you won't need a debugger. Besides, there are opensource debugging tools on that site anyways.

I'm currently in a course at college doing animation so i know how to make movies in flash, but i want to learn Flash Action scripting for games.

how do you make it so that when you press a button the Scene changes???

First open up flash and make a scene. Then make it a Button, Now click on the button and press F9 to open up your action panel then type this below.

The brackets with first written in them can be anything you want then write it down, you need to remember what you put in them. Now wherever you want to start when you push the button you have to find the spot you want and when you have found a frame you want to start it at you put a keyframe there and you name it. Now go to properties and you should see a white box and light grey text inside that says label the frame.


now with the frame labeled you should see a red flag. So all you do for scene select is make a few buttons with the code and change the name inside the quotations(With no backspaces) to first, second and so on.

So now you have made your scene select buttons you need to match them up with the frames, dont forget to change the frame names aswell.

Alright, here is a question for you guys. How can I teach myself Flash? I don't need to be good enough to make games or anything, just flash for a simple business website. I'd rather not have to go out and buy the Idiot's Guide if I don't have to.
