I have a friend who I grow up with and he ran into some trouble a couple years ago. He had gotten a felony and recently went to apply for a job. The job was a warehouse position for Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. They told him he was hired and they would be sending him a packet in the mail from human resources. A couple days after hearing this, the called him up and said is background check can back bad so they would have to terminate his employment immediately. They also told him that they don't hire felons whether they tell the truth or lie on an application. He would have only been paid 8 bucks an hour and been working 45 hours a week, 5 days a week as well.

About a month before this he went to a job interview and was honest on his application. They still proceeded to have him in for an interview after he clearly stated what his felony was about. They still proceeded to process paperwork, have him fill out paperwork, and take a screening test on the computer. Immediately after taking the test they said they couldn't hire him due to him having a felony. Yet the whole time during the interview they acted like it wasn't a problem.

After thinking about this, it made me really see a different side of felons and the work force. I honestly don't think that it is always right to discriminate people from so many jobs just off a past mistake. It just seems as if they are immediately cut-off from making any good money to pay fines and better there life once they get a felony. I say that to say this, it's like they are using humans like they are merchandise, they pawn us, tax us, and basically making us pay for everything. And when I say they, I mean they as in the government and such parties alike. I voted No and this is pretty much why. What do you think judged off this matter???

It depends on the kind of job really.

For example, I would rather have an ex-alcoholic work at McDonald's rather than being the CEO of an important company...

Your failing to see the smaller picture here. Sounds also like you didn't read my full post either...Either way, I'm not saying that he starts off CEO anywhere, maybe years and years down the road but what I'm saying is. There should be like some sorta guideline or criteria for the different level of jobs as to what they have access to on certain scales of crime. When the crime was committed may also be used in determining this criteria. I'm not saying eliminate the whole idea of background checks but make a guideline so not every single employer has the same access and right to discriminating felons. As of now any and all employers have the right to immediately not hire someone off a background check. Imagine if all or maybe even most employers did that? Then where would they work? Plain and simple, it just doesn't seem right to them. There's two sides to this story and both have a right to live am I right? Well how are they ever supposed to better their life, repay back to society, etc. when they are basically weeding felons out left and right at jobs anymore? The numbers keep increasing on employers that do background checks.

Your absolutely right. Everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves, and it does seem like more and more of those opportunities are being robbed from them. I also did exaggerate with my previous post quite a bit. However, it still comes down to the type of job and the actual crime that he or she committed...

And your right about me not seeing the smaller picture and not reading your post in its entirety. You can blame that on A.D.D. and skimming...

Only if the crime is related to job. Would not be a good idea to hire a truck driver if he has had multiple DUI's. If a company can't understand mistakes then that means they can't take risks. And when you can't take risks that means the company is filled with scum The kind of scum who don't give raises, benefits, or time off.

Exactly how I feel. If it is job-related then I can see a reason for discriminating someone from a job, that is only the way I agree with it.

yeah, I think it's a job dependent sort of thing.

But I don't blame employers for doing more and more background checking on employees. It's really expensive to hire someone for a job if they don't work out. You end up losing money on employees that don't last longer than 6 months or something like that.

But yeah, I wouldn't want someone who has committed some sort of money laundering scheme to be working with cash... but I don't see how an assault charge from 8 years ago would be relevant to a job now.

This one depends both on the felony and the job. You really wouldn't want a sex offender (I believe that is a misdemeanor or possibly a felony) working at a day care. Then there's also the case where the starving mother steals from a grocery store to keep her child alive. It's probably going to be a felony, depending on how much she tries to steal, but then she wouldn't be allowed to work at a job to feed said child, forcing her to steal again and repeat the cycle, probably for a worse punishment. It would make society as a whole better to run background checks and only deny jobs if the felony relates to the job or its something such as embezzlement. (hit the enter button before I was done, hence the edit here)

Technically they are not able to discriminate on such charges but we all know that they will, especially if it relates to the job. Unless its a major offense or a repetitive problem then I would see no harm in hiring them.

it's going to happen anyways if it's information available to the public, so it might as well be done in the open. While many felons have reformed, from the perspective of somebody who does not know the person personally, it may still be "risky" to hire them.

I can't really vote yes or no because in some cases yes the felony should determine the job market for them. It all depends on the felony. Say a person is on the sex offender list for child molestation. You wouldn't want them to work at a daycare now would you? I think that if the felony will have negative effects towards the job, the other employees, or the customers then yes it should keep a person from getting a job at certain placed. But if someone has a DUI and they want to work at a clothing store I don't think that felony should have any bearing. Now if they want to work at a bar that's a different story. lol
