I just saw this recently: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100424/pl_afp/usimmigrationarizona

Basically Arizona set a new law that allows officers to stop anyone who they think is considered an illegal alien and check them out.

Here's some quotes:

"Authorities in Arizona faced new protests Saturday after the US state's governor signed a tough new law targeting illegal immigrants, which critics claim enshrines racial profiling and President Barack Obama branded "misguided."

"We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," Brewer said. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."

"She has just given every police agency in Arizona a mandate to harass anyone who looks or sounds foreign, while doing nothing to address the real problems we're facing."

What you think about this? Long overdue in my opinion, nothing wrong with preserving the USA, our security, and our jobs. No offense to the illegals but this article just goes to show Washington isn't doing a dam thing they said they would. I think this is a big step to show how much power each state has, soon it will make the president look powerless when it comes to security, jobs, and preservation.

I liked what I heard.

I don't see a problem with it. If you are in any country without having a legal right to be there then you should be deported.

Be thankful that the border guards aren't allowed to kill you because in other countries they can. I'm so sick of hearing about how mis-treated illegal immigrants are.... they should be grateful that they don't die trying to cross the border.... maybe a mile wide land mine strip between the 2 countries would discourage people from crossing the border.

Yeah I just don't see why this has not happened yet. I mean if I walk inside the CIA building or something I need some sort of card or identification to pass. The same should apply to the rest of the country. Just like passports... exactly like them or like drivers licenses. If Americans are required for identification when pulled over then surely it is the same as checking for illegal aliens' green cards. For Obama to say it was "misguided" was quite funny though considering americans need ID's and illegals dont.

I like it too. If officials aren't allowed to stop and search anybody, how are we supposed to ever enforce the laws anyways? Of course it enables them to search anyone foreign looking, foreign means you're from another country, and that's where illegal aliens come from!

If the police agencies are harassing foreigners in a racist manner, isn't the problem with the police, rather than the laws? You should train and hire your police officers more selectively and carefully, rather than depending on the laws to do the work for you. If you don't have an adequate police force, no one enforces the laws and the laws mean nothing.

Police ask for your driver's license and insurance anyways, so they could just add green cards to the traditional "license and registration" line. That's not racist, that's following the law.

I dont know if any of you have been to Arizona but the only people here who look foreign are people of a hispanic background. Meaning this is basically going to effect only them, there wont be any asian people getting pulled over because they think they're aliens. This is strictly meant for hispanics, dont sugar coat it.

If you know anything about the law it is illegal for police to stop and search you for absolutely no reason. So what this basically does is allow them to stop any hispanic person on the street, strictly for the reason that they are hispanic. Now imagine if you were a hispanic person and this law was aimed at you. Would you consider it fair then?(and im not talking about being fair for illegals, Im talking about a legal US citizen who is hispanic)

And dont get it twisted I dont want any more illegal here then what we already have. Hell we should be able to get rid of all of the illegals. But this law is just wrong.

Im telling you this state is ass backwards. They are trying to pass a law that makes it so you dont have to have a permit to buy or carry a gun.(sounds like a real safe place to be at doesnt it) The economy is down here to and they are worried about passing gun laws. And only about 3 years ago did they start making MLK Day a holiday for schools, not becuase they thought it should be, but only becuase they were going to lose funding from the goverment if they didnt. When for the past 30 some odd years whenever the rodeo is in town the schools have 2 days off. And people actually think Mcain would make a good president they should really take a look at Arizona.

@ tonetone714

If building a fence is not possible or won't work, what else do you expect them to do? If someone does not speak any English, chances are they are over here illegally. it's distasteful, but if they are breaking no laws then they will suffer an inconvenience at most.

As for the gun laws, a lot of violence is spilling over and people need to protect themselves. The police force does not have enough man power to protect everyone all the time with this much rampant, violent crime. Not needing a permit does not mean that any mass murderer can walk in and buy an uzi, if you were implying this. The economy will climb itself out of the pit, where government intervention would likely only slow it down.

As for the sate being "ass backwards", what qualifies as a school holiday is up to the discretion of the states, as allowed by the constitution. If you don't like that, don't move to Arizona. there is no need to start a flame war over it.

@lagslayer

Its much more then an inconvinence, when your being pulled over for being a certain race. You obviosuly cant imagine what that is like. If you could you could see it isnt right.

And on the gun laws it was perfectly fine before, you would have to fill out forms and have a background check to obtain a weapons permit. It doesnt need to be a mass murderer, it can be a husband whose going through a rough divorce or a guy who is pissed off at society.(does virgina tech ring a bell?) And you dont need an uzi you can do plenty of damage with a little .22 .

And your right about "what qualifies as a school holiday is up to the discretion of the states" but that kind of proves my point. How is a rodeo considered a holiday? what did this rodeo contribute to humanity?..... Dont worry Ill wait........Cant think of anything me either. And I alrady live here so I'm voicing my opinion of this state I dont see how that is flaming.

And you shouldnt take the mcain comment to much offnese, I feel the same way about all politicains including obama. Politics are dead its just celebrity and campaign contributers.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea yet I can see why people will say they are racial profiling but really, what other race is jumping borders. Not too many that don't resemble that typical color and race already. I think this might help put a dent on immigration.

Yea thats kind of the problem with it. They try to sugar coat it like "this is for every race, we will pull you over if you look foreign"(which is still pretty wrong). But if you have ever been to southern arizona It basically consists of whites and hispanics. I really doubt they'll be pullling over white people saying "Get on the ground MotherF*****, you look like your from canada".

And your probably right that this will put a little dent onto immigration, but it will also put tons of hate inside many hispanic peoples hearts.
Something drastic definitley needs to be done, but this isnt it.

It doesn't really matter about race, if you look suspicious period you will be stopped by them. I'm white and got searched by a mexican cop, so I know what its like with tables turned. He also said if I spoke english I told him yea I was born in america unlike you. That got him pissed lol.

Anyway, they will get over it just like 9/11 and the arabs, if you were an arab you were a terrorist but that has died down. If your abused by cops get an attorney and sue the crap out of them simple as that. There are racist cops out there so there is no perfect solution.

There is no other solution to fixing immigration though. Government created NAFTA for a reason, to drain the american middle class and outsource to cheaper labor from mexicans. I can see why mexicans would be mad but americans should be even more pissed, its their country, its their jobs. Not nice to come in and take both away from us.

And how can you sue someone if what they are doing is the law?

It seems some people think that if your not white your not american.

People are focusing this on race, they are sugar coating it to the extremes. It's about immigration and illegals. If your mexican and are a legal citizen then its no problem and they shouldn't be complaining. I can see chips coming sooner then imagined. If people want another fix, plant a chip in yourself so cops dont have to search you for being illegal that is probably obamas solution.

The law is to seek out illegals, not to round up all mexicans and deport them. If your a american citizen and have an ID, no big deal. Whats wrong with a cop going up to you asking for identification? Nothing, but if your a mexican its racist?

Since people are pointing this so much on race, how about we let mexican cops do it instead? That would eliminate this whole race issue people seem to have.

War doesn't mean peace & freedom it means death, money, and power to the people who want control. Governments can't solve issues like humans so they recruit people who become programmed into barbarians to do it for them.

No offense, but i don't think your scenario about Mexico earlier is exactly relevant. I'm sure Hispanics there have already been prejudices already before this law, and now with this, it's just not right. I don't think you truly know how they would feel about this. I know, illegal immigrants are taking away jobs from americans, but that's not their fault, blame it on whatever the government's doing by providing jobs to the illegals.

The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that:

“ The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and Warrants shall not be issued, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. ”

Okay so what this law does is make you being hispanic a probable cause.

"Whats wrong with a cop going up to you and asking for identification" falls under "Unreasonable search and seizure" which would be unconstitutional.

"Governments can't solve issues like humans so they recruit people who become programmed into barbarians to do it for them."
I cant really decide what you are trying to say by that, so ill just leave it alone.

Ok, I had some typos and I dont want any misunderstandings, so here we go
I said "prejudices" I meant "prejudiced"... and when I said, it's not their fault, I meant the Hispanics, not the illegal immigrants.
Yeahhh... lol

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and Warrants shall not be issued, but upon probable cause"

In other words, immigration is the probable cause in this case so it makes it legal. There's no way to tell if they are illegal but to ask for their identification.

Asking for identification isn't "unreasonable search and seizure" it's mandatory for just about everything when your involved with a cop. They will always ask for it. "Unreasonable search and seizure" is when they actually physically touch you and search your pockets and take away your belongings. That isn't the case here. If they search you and seize your stuff, then yeah its "unreasonable seizure" unless they have reason to believe you got something you should not have.

If asking for identification is unlawful then they simply would not do it when you try to buy cigarettes or liquor at the store. If there is a probable cause to ID someone then it is legal.

Man you need to brush up on your search and seizure laws bro, or your going to get screwed by cops.

Your definition of search and seizure is wrong. Heres why..........

It is illegal for a cop to come up to you and even bother you with out probable cause that you commited or are in the act of committing a crime. And if a cop comes up to you and asks you a question and you walk away you will most likely be slammed to the ground or tasered, maybe both(depending on where you live). Hence if they even talk to you, YOU have been seized.

For like the 3rd time, what this law does is make being a hispanic a probable cause.

I dont know if youve just been skimming through my last posts, but it seems like you have. Because I never mentioned anything about its illegal for them to ask for IDs. However it is if they dont have probable cause.

And what a waste of time for cops, I thought there job was to "serve and protect" not "observe and detect". On top of that cops already have the power to do this, all this law does is make it perfectly fine to pull over any hispanic for no reason other then that they are hispanic.

@tonetone714

Just because a disproportionate number of people from a certain group are breaking the law, doesn't mean the law is just hating on minorities. You yourself said that the vast majority of illegal immigrants in Arizona are of Hispanic descent, so they are going to be checked more for illegal status. Also, the law lists the search for legal status a secondary offense, so you would have to break the law for something else if they want to search you anyways.

As for the rodeo being a school holiday, It is a major social event. It may be the biggest thing that happens in a small town all year or maybe they are a big deal even in the big cities.

"It is illegal for a cop to come up to you and even bother you with out probable cause that you commited or are in the act of committing a crime."

So being illegal doesn't count as a crime?

"Hence if they even talk to you, YOU have been seized"

Wrong, you are only seized when in cuffs and in their car. Seized means "to take hold of suddenly or forcibly" talking does not fit that definition.

It is legalization of racial profiling and I am 100% against it. There are better ways, like actually pushing for reforming the immigration laws to get rid of the problem... but no, they are going the racist route.

The city of Los Angeles is working on boycotting the entire state of Arizona and severing all economic ties in protest, as is San Francisco. If you don't think that is a big deal, remember that most of the goods coming into the Western US come through LA.
