Does the cursor work right?

Something whipped up by pi0x.
So far it looks ok in safari, but could i get feedback?

big fat cat : Looks good to me. But you should expect nothing less of pi0x.

pi0x : It works but just for warning: Most people like their cursors the way they are.

soxfan849 : I'm not sure what you're talking about, could you whip up a picture in the MS Paint to give me sort of a visual of what you have in mind?

I could, but I'll do it tomorrow. Basically I want to use the float attribute to make it stay at the bottom. It makes sense in my head.

Also, I fiddled with the way my layout is coded. Rather than using embedded styles I use style brackets. My id's are #soxfanin and #soxfanout, so there's no way that it could have any effect on an earlier style for the page. But is there a reason that this would be frowned upon? (it's not a big deal for me to have it that way, but I think it just makes it easier to read).

soxfan849 : Well, you should use classes unless you have only one such element per page, but other than that, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't. I might make your header a bit longer, but in this day of high speed internet connections, I really don't see a problem with it.

Right, but since the style is in my layout code, it gets reproduced regardless. So I figured it didn't really make too much of a difference, and using ID's would make more sense (since each layout is really coded to change those two divs only). That was my thought process, at least.

And I'm not sure what you mean by making my header longer.

Lazlo Falconi : I was really just testing some CSS stuff, and wanted to see how you'd change the cursor. Which is really easy.

soxfan849 : Right, but since the element is used multiple times on each page (With each post) then you should use classes instead of IDs. I'm not exactly sure why this is, but it's just what I learned to do. I think it only matters in XHTML Strict, but posting on the internet is as much about preventing crime as it is about solving crime. Moreover, it is about procedural correctness in the unwavering pursuit of unquestionable moral authority.

I don't know if it does it on your screen (since my resolution is odd) but the image seems to repeat on the side. I'd like to find a way to keep the post layout the same size, but scale the image so no matter the resolution, the image will never repeat unless it is stretched.

I would think that it's because, if you're developing a web page actually, using an ID for the same exact style multiple times would require you to type the style out multiple times (since IDs aren't reusable? I'm not sure if I'm right about that, but I think I am). If that's right, it doesn't make sense to use an ID unless you use it for a specific element.

But what you said makes enough sense, so I'll just switch it. I would've done it to begin with if I were making an actual web page, since I always start with classes and work down to IDs using them only for specific elements (which was how I was treating my layout, even though it could appear multiple times on the same page). But I don't know if that's right, either. Should I start with IDs and only use classes for things that will be used multiple times? It seems like it would be tougher to switch from ID to a class every time I realize that, than it would to just realize it and add an element to a class that previously only had one element.

And do you have any resources that you could recommend for web development? I've barely learned anything on the subject and it was a decent while back, so I certainly don't have a great grasp on good standard practice (don't bother saying w3schools; I like that site for a reference, but I'm not as big a fan of using it to learn from... though I've never looked at any of their books before).

soxfan849 : Well, since you already know of W3Schools, I don't really know what else to say. That's pretty much how I learned to use CSS, that and trying to make stylesheets for forums I used to go to. The best advice I can give you is practice, practice, practice, and when you don't know how to do something, Google it or ask someone.

Gotcha, will do. I have a book on the subject already that I looked at over the weekend that's basically taught everything I know right now. But it never hurts to have more. And the way w3schools teaches is just a lot harder for me to follow. Something about writing every bit of code that I practice with really helps, so I'd rather they write their code all out on the page instead of having their little editor (I'm probably the only person with that opinion). Anyway, I'm rambling on now. Thanks for the advice.

It seems to work for for me. The background stretches right, but you code so weird... It took me a few minutes to actually figure out where to put the code.

P.S I used the layout maker thing w/preset base thing

unknown0s : The Layout Maker doesn't support transparent text boxes at this time. It might in the future; I'm not really aware of all their plans for the Layout Maker.

For now, you'll just have to code your own layouts if you want transparent text boxes, or get someone, like me, to make one for you.

unknown0s : Unfortunately there is currently no way to avoid losing your layout when you edit your post, except for manually retyping your layout after editing. And what pi0x said is correct, the layout maker lacks some functionality. This is just more motivation to become a Trusted Member!

So I just noticed that my layout kind of looks like my terminal, so I decided to change my font color to more closely match that of my terminals. But I won't be darkening the background. I like it just as it is, thank you very much.
