Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga was released for the Gameboy Advance near the end of 2003. It is a different type of video game from anything I have ever played. It is a role-playing game, otherwise known as an RPG. The only other game that is similar to Superstar Saga that I'm familiar with is the first Zelda game on NES. I enjoy playing that game quite a bit, but it was more of an action/adventure style of game. This one is totally different, but every other part of this game I could rate pretty high. The graphics and storyline for Superstar Saga were very well done. I just could not get past doing some of these "Advance" moves and other things that made the gameplay less enjoyable for me.

Graphics 10/10: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga looks a lot like a cartoon. Everything is very animated, and it looks great. The graphics of Superstar Saga remind me a lot of Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland. I would have to rate the look of this game the same as I rated that one. Both games have a lot of color to their backgrounds and sprites. This is one game, of several, I've played on the Gameboy Advance that took full advantage of the 32-bit handheld system. Like with Nightmare in Dreamland and Wario Land 4, Superstar Saga is its own game. Most of the other GBA games I've played were just ports.

This one stands out, and I guess that's why it looks as good as it does. Nintendo gave more time and attention into creating a game with a lot of color and detail to it that most of the Mario Advance and Donkey Kong ports didn't have. Long story short, Superstar Saga looks amazing!

Music 10/10: I'd have to rate the music of Superstar Saga about the same. I cannot find one dull track in the whole game. Some people would argue about that and say that they got some of the music from Super Mario 64. I've never played that game, so I wouldn't know. As far as I'm concerned, every song is its own song unlike anything I have ever heard. Cackletta's theme was probably my favorite, but the battle theme is also pretty cool. There was also an island theme that I enjoyed quite a lot too. Nintendo really got creative with the look of sound of this particular GBA game.

Gameplay 5/10: This is where I started to run into a lot of problems with Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga for the GBA. This Nintendo game is unlike anything I am familiar with. I've played this game many times, and the farthest I ever got was this ship with all these drybones on it. It took me hours to get that far. Anyway, you control both Mario and Luigi on this overworld map. Players can either have Mario in the lead or Luigi. The brothers travel along the overworld together and come into contact with enemies along the way which starts a battle.

These battles were pretty fun to start with in the early part of the game. After a while, they got to be more difficult which is about what you would expect. The game would always give you a good stockpile of items that I found myself using a lot of by the time I got to the WooHoo University and probably even before that! Syrup gave Mario and Luigi "Bros. Points" need to do the "Bros. Attacks". These types of attacks were needed to inflict major damage on the harder enemies like the bosses of some of the areas.

Before you got to that, Mario and Luigi would have to get through certain puzzles that could be hard to figure out. Some weren't too terrible, but I always found myself getting stuck on the bridge until I figured out I had to talk to all of the villagers! I can't remember how I figured that out!!! Someone left a thread on here about not being able to beat the "Border Jump"! I know! That part gave me trouble too, but I did finally get through it. Woo Hoo Mountain was hard also with the "Spirit-Catching" part, and why does it take so long to beat some of these bosses?!

Mama Piranha really gives me trouble sometimes if I can even get that far! Last time, I couldn't even beat the Woo Hoo Mountain boss because I ran out of Bros. Points and had to do Solo Attacks! For some reason, the Bros. Attacks weren't doing any damage!! This happens way too much for me. It's like Superstar Saga is fun when you can do damage in these boss fights, but if you can't it's GAME OVER! Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I find myself having to do research on how to play this game! OMG! WHY? IT'S JUST A GAME NOT A BOOK REPORT!!

Mario and Luigi is too time consuming for me, and it is also too confusing to figure out some of the game mechanics. The tutorials are easy, but there aren't enough of them, and some things in the game are too vague for anyone to understand. I could never figure out how to do the Advance Bros. Attacks. I kept failing at that every time!! I did like going to the item shops, upgrading the brother's attacks, finding badges, etc. The levels were pretty unique too with their own themes. Superstar does have quite a lot of variety to the overworlds just like in Super Mario Bros. 3.

The enemies were pretty fun to fight too up to a certain point. Superstar Saga is fun for me to play until I start getting stuck on some of the bosses or puzzles. Then, I would just Rage Quit and Game Over. Unfortunately, that could happen early in the game, and other times it wouldn't. That's when I would enjoy playing for hours and get a lot out of it. I guess Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is a pretty well designed game to a certain extent. I don't enjoy it as much as the platformer games, but I guess it's more fun than I made out like it was when I started reviewing this game. It's far from perfect!!

Story 10/10: I remember Nintendo put a lot into the plot of Superstar Saga! It was broken up into several different parts and went on for hours and hours. First you get this new villain by the name of Cackletta that is supposed to be female with her assistant Fawful. They steal Princess Peach's voice, but it turns out that it wasn't really Princess Peach. However, she does get kidnapped in this Mario game again, and yes, she is kidnapped by Bow.... well, not really. She is kidnapped by Bowletta!! Cackletta takes over Bowser's body after Mario and Luigi defeat him at the University.

Along the way, Mario and Luigi travel through the Beanbean Kingdom and save Queen Bean who has been turned into a monster by Cackletta. They meet Prince Peasly also and get into all kinds of adventures in this Mario game. Bowser works with the Mario Bros. in the beginning until he is fired from a cannon on Woo Hoo Mountain. Then, he turns back bad with the help of Popple who is a "Shadow Thief". They end up helping Lady Lima, who is Queen Bean's second in command, at the Airport. And, I do think the Koopa kids return in the game as well.

I have never made it to the end of Superstar Saga, but I remember the game's story being long and well thought out. There were all kinds of plot twists and surprises with new characters and a whole new setting! Mario and Luigi are not in the Mushroom Kingdom at all, they are in the Beanbean Kingdom with all new characters, villains, and enemies. I do see some familiar faces, but Nintendo did become more creative with the plot of this game. It really is a game made for the Gameboy Advance in the early 2000s which I never played up until 5 or 10 years ago on Vizzed.

Content 10/10: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga takes forever to finish! I don't see how anyone could get the time to be able to finish this game!! I spent about 10 hours getting to the Bones Ship, and that was nowhere near the end. I've seen YouTubers play this game for a long amount of time with a playlist of 72 videos!! If you know what you're doing, you're in for a long haul. People who are familiar with Superstar Saga probably enjoy it quite a lot with all of this material. There really are a lot of shops, items, and abilities to get along the way.

I liked how the game was broken up into several different overworlds like: Beanbean Castle Town, Woo Hoo Mountain, Oho Ocean, TeeHee Valley, etc. These worlds had their own theme just like in SMB3. You're not just playing one area the whole time or areas that lacked the variety like the levels in Yoshi's Island. The variety is what made Superstar Saga more of an interesting game to try and play. So did the exploration.

Difficulty 10/10: I have never beaten Mario and Luigi on GBA. I can always count on running into trouble on one of the bosses, running out of items, getting stuck somewhere, etc. I don't know how to do Advance moves. I can't figure out why my Bros. attacks don't do any more damage in the boss fights than what they do. As I've already explained, it is hard to consistently make progress with this game! I guess, I've done better than some players, but I think this is a hard game! It's hard to improve on something you keep getting hung up on.

Overall 9/10: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is a pretty decent game overall. It is a different style of game that I am not used to, but it has more good points to it than bad. The variety and exploration are what bring me back to it, but the gameplay is what keeps me from investing as much time in the game as players who grew up with it. I stopped playing video games in 1995, and Superstar Saga came out in 2003 and 2004. For some, this game is nostalgia for them, and I can see why that is. It does have a lot of creativity to it with the: music, look, plot, and uniqueness of the areas. I thought this game was okay, but it did have its issues.
