I’m in my 40s and remember the 80s 90s games/consoles. My question is how and why are things like gameboys still popular at places like Hot Topic.

What kids are buying a gameboy shaped backpack in 2019? The kids of today didn’t grow up with these games, how do they even relate to them?

I would have never bought something from the 60s as a kid in the 80’s to wear as a statement.

Well I grew up with the PS2 as my first console and I'm 19 but my best guess is because they are iconic and they have gone out of their way to buy and play games from back then or even emulated them I mean people growing up today have seen the original Star Wars Trilogy and other iconic movies so I don't think it would be that hard to imagine younger people being interested in older games as well.

The term 'retro' isn't meant to be a statement.

I was in the era where SNES and Genesis was new; it was a new step from NES and SMS.

I am turning 37 this year by the way. I couldn't tell you why kids are buying products these days for retro games 20 years before their time. But the deal is retro games are fun, and thus profitable.

I think it's a lot of adults that buy that stuff, the adults that grew up with it. Occassionally you'll see a kid who is into retro gaming. My daughter loves retro games and that's probably mostly thanks to my love for retro gaming. So maybe the kids that do appreciate that stuff are doing so because of the influence from their parents that grew up with it.

I'd also like to credit Minecraft a little for conditioning kids to appreciate pixel art and simplistic graphics.

There's two main reasons that I would attribute to this.

1. The kids of then are the parents of today. It's the parents that are buying these things. Not only that, but the people who grew up with these consoles probably still have these consoles in their homes with their kids.

2. Youtube. Video in general opened up the floodgates for all consoles over the last 12 years. Not only do popular Youtubers play old games often, but there's been lots of huge events tied to old games like Twitch Plays Pokemon.

zanderlex : The YouTube influence is a really good point. That is the source of media for most younger people these days. Very few of the younger generations still watch broadcasted or cable television. And a lot of YouTubers are upper 20s, early 30s, and they grew up with the classics.

I think it has something to do with nostalgia. When youre a kid, life is simple. The 90s really, has to be the greatest decade for video games. I'm in my 20's and I still love retro games. The original playstation is my favorite console of all time, but some don't consider it retro. Modern games are nice but there is something about older games that I think appeals to everyone. I'm a 90's kid but I still appreciate 80's games like atari and arcade games during those times.
