In december 31st 2020, flash will be removed from chrome because "muh security" and the only reason vizzed is relevant will no longer work. How do we combat this?

Long and short - we don't.

David doesn't have the money to invest in a non-flash alternative, and there's basically no chance he's going to, especially with a pandemic going on.

The site will just go on as it is now, without the RGR. The traffic dipped significantly once Nintendo games were removed from the RGR, so we know what to expect. More activity will drop.

David's hope is the other features (such as the video game room, music, board, etc) will keep people around. Of course, people don't care about forums anymore, so that's an uphill battle.

I think the RGR will still be around with the Retro Arch emulators, which aren't bad but not good either. There won't be a way to play Nintendo games anymore. I'm already looking into finding another hobby besides Vizzed. I really wish something could be done about flash, but it sounds like nobody cares anymore. Seriously, this place is going to die out the way this is going! The RGR is the only thing that people like us care about.

If people cared more about the forums that would help, but I see no interest in that anymore. The Nintendo copyright issue hurt that part of Vizzed too. Maybe Retro Arch will help keep things going, but there does need to be a way to load Vizzed ROMs into these emulators. I'm glad you made a thread about this because it is urgent.

If it's only being removed from Chrome, then for people like me who use Mozilla to play RGR games...I haven't seen anything about Mozilla discontinuing use of Flash so should that and any other alternative browsers remain ok?

It's a hit we must take and endure, just like the ones that came before it.

We'll manage somehow. We might lose playable systems and players will probably lose the save files they created when playing using the plugin, but the RGR will remain alive. In what form, is something that only time will tell.

Most users will probably go away to try to find another place. Sometimes searching for that place can make you come back with more force if you were unsuccessful, so we might go again through a heavy drop in early 2021 to see a slight rise in the second half of the year. I hope I'm not overly optimistic about this.

Stamkosis91 : Adobe themselves are ending support for Flash, so all browsers will discontinue its use after that, and also Microsoft will remove Flash from all browsers via a Windows Update on the same fated day. There seems to not be an alternative to keep using Flash even if discontinued, for the sadness of us all.

I think the RGR, as a way to play by yourself, will be fine because we'll still have the retroarch cores, but the problem will be netplay, and all the netplay events the community hosted. I think for netplay, we'll have to transition to a stand alone (as in not ran in the browser) solution, which I talked about here. TL;DR: I have a Unofficial Vizzed Netplay Pack that includes all of the games from official Vizzed netplay tournaments and extras (+ some PS1 games) on top that we can use, and I feel it would be an easy and low money/effort solution to make an official Vizzed mednafen frontend to keep official Vizzed netplay alive.

EX Palen : Ah man, I wasn't aware of that being the case. Maybe I should've, and maybe I did but got the wrong impression reading the OP specifically mentioning Chrome. Then again, if this was a problem that could've been worked around by using a different browser, then this thread probably wouldn't need to exist anyway because the solution would be so obvious.

Well then, that really does suck. I've always been off-and-on about coming here and playing games anyway. I mostly play the old Sonic games and some of the deviations of them. It's always been nice to be able to come back to those games all these years later, long after my old Sega Genesis stopped working and the games along with it. Hopefully there will still be ways around being able to play those games post-Flash. If it need be elsewhere, then so be it, but this was the first website I came across that had these old games when I first started looking some 8 1/2 years ago so I have some loyalty to this place and will always try to make it work here more than anywhere else.

Thanks for clueing my in better. It wasn't what I wanted to hear but it's what I needed to hear.

I plan on sticking around for the HTML5 games. For the Nintendo games, I'll probably just watch gameplay videos on YouTube. Hopefully, this pandemic can level off to where I can get back to work, and I can go shopping for the removed games. I still think there should be a way to load Vizzed ROMs into these browser emulators, and the idea of Mednafen would be another alternative to keep netplay around. Hopefully, David looks into the Mednafen idea.

i have an idea ruffle can emulate adobe flash and it keeps on being improved so even after adobe flash is discontinued maybe emulate flash emulating the plug in for windows users i could see this allowing the plugin to load on windows based computer via browser (firefox, chrome, etc)
so by the end of this year it might be able to run the swf file that loads the plugin but they haven't completely worked out action script which i know that the plugin uses.
so people could still enjoy the plugin after 2020 if it comes far enough to work.

legacyme3 : Its bad and sad to loose this valuable history of video games because of one single piece of software that probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the internet and peoples love of games. What would happen if they decided to close library doors because of security, would that be the end of readable books too.
Why cant they just fix the security of flash like they do with everything else.

Well, here we are. Just a few hours to go before the Flash killing browser update is deployed.

At least there'll still be Retroarch, and maybe some other emulators will still work? Don't some use Javascript instead of Flash? And someone suggested adding EasyRPG, a HTML5 platform that lets you play RPG Maker 2000/2003 games using your web browser. That might help since that'll be new content for the site.

It would be helpful if links to non-functional emulators are removed.

Apparently Flash will still work until January 12, nine days from now.

https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/flashplayer/end-of-life.html

Is this emulator list up to date? https://www.vizzed.com/emulators/

If it is, then the following emulators will be broken after that date: 1964, FCEUX, Gens, MAME/MESS, Mednafen, Mupen64Plus, NESBox, NullDC, VisualBoyAdvance, and ZSNES.
