Rayman85 : Well, what can I say? I read the entire post. You certainly have an interesting opinion, but, then again, this is coming from someone who really likes to play M-rated games at least every once in a while.

If you don't like the Bayonetta games, that's fine, it's your opinion, however...more or less objectively speaking, I'd say that you are wrong if you say that Bayonetta ''is edgy as all hell for the wrong reasons'', if we were talking about Jak II, or the Danganronpa games, or Death end re;Quest (I like Death end re;Quest, but oh well), or whatever, then yeah, but the Bayonetta games, unlike the Devil May Cry series, aren't games that take themselves too seriously, they are definitely very violent and have frequent swearing, but just because a game is very violent and coarse doesn't mean that is extremely edgy or something, it's obvious that Bayonetta, like many Japanese games, is a series that shouldn't be taken too seriously, and perhaps, is more about the funny and ridiculous moments than anything else, pretty much every Japanese game with an emphasis on story has a lot of funny moments (Moco Moco Friends, the Neptunia games, Omega Quintet, Blue Reflection...), and as I said, at times a game in question is perhaps more about funny, silly and ridiculous moments than anything else.

It's true that usually M-rated games sell poorly on Nintendo systems despite being critically acclaimed (see Madworld and the No More Heroes games), but even so, Nintendo has been promoting more mature games, more than ever it seems, the fact that Pokemon is still a million seller and that Super Mario Odyssey has been a huge success means that Nintendo won't abandon their more family-friendly IPs, you might not like the direction that Nintendo is taking now, and that's fine, but I supposes that in the end, they are publishing and promoting T-rated and M-rated games because there is a market for those games, and even if it's a much smaller audience than the people who buy games like Mario and Pokemon, as long as that audience exists, they'll publish those games, heck, a complete list of T-rated and M-rated games published by Nintendo would be very long nowadays.

So...I guess I could say that I don't have a problem with Nintendo publishing games like Bayonetta 2 or Astral Chain...I like both family-friendly games and more mature games after all. For better or worse, Nintendo Switch has a lot of M-rated games, in fact, I think it's the Nintendo console with the largest amount of physical M-rated games.

In any case, I might disagree with some points, but interesting opinion nonetheless.

lolid23 : The reason Bayonetta is so edgy is because of the supposedly Pro Satanist social commentary and the titular freak's unique sex appeal, which I don't know why people accept as so normal and why people don't ridicule the hell out of her for. She's such a touchy subject that I actually lost all faith in Nintendo as a whole and actually smashed my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with a baseball bat, and I also attempted to destroy my brother's Nintendo Switch on various occasions.

If you want a game that is over-the-top mature but still not edgy, go check out CarnEvil. It's bloody, gory, nasty, vulgar, scary, but overall so blatantly silly and doesn't take anything seriously at all - except, of course, killing the player so he/she will have to cough up more quarters to continue. My definition of "edgy" is something that is supposedly "cool and mature" that the objectively wise adult would find to be appealing to stupid adolescents rather than a truly mature person, and Bayonetta falls under that category perfectly. Other s*** like South Park and 99% of Adult Swim does, too, but all that crap is another story. Also, Astro Chain is rated T not M, so I don't consider that game "edgy", though it's still looks quite mediocre.

Also, I hope you understand where I come from in that I grew up with the Nintendo that was purely a family business, and that their drastic change of heart completely jinxes me to this day. Plus, M-rated games sell worse on Nintendo than any other mainstream console despite all the overexposure, and Wikipedia told me that MadWorld is an especially notable commercial failure from what I remember and nothing will convince me otherwise.

Lastly, the fact that such a freak is popular - let alone mainstream - in today's society shows just how f***ed up this modern world is. And if you couldn't guess, I have no respect at all for anyone who likes Bayonetta.

Then don't buy them

Video games are supposed to give us what we can't do in real life. Sadly, it's human nature to know the unknown and do the immoral, like killing and doing things their mom told them not to

Do you have an example besides bayonetta. Your logic is literally "Nintendo supports bayonetta so they are horny"

I mean I can honestly say I haven't played any M-rated games on a Nintendo handheld nor console well besides Castlevanina mirror of fate now that I really think about it. To me the most edgy hardcore Nintendo game is probably contra xD i's really hard to think of any Nintendo game thats strictly M-rated but I don't really see a problem with them tipping into the M-rated game world after all the people that grew up with nintendo consoles like NES SNES and 64 are now full grown adults that can buy and play M rated games so I don't see any harm with them developing more mature content for the people who grew up playing the console but my thing is if you don't like the mature video games on the console don't buy them whats the point of the video game rating system if you don't use it to buying age appropriate games easier for adults to buy there children. Not to mention there literally is no M-rated games on the Nintendo systems as it is. Granted I will be getting blasphemous when it comes out on the switch and I guess thats a M-rated game.

Nintendo's reputation, to me, hasn't changed any bit. I've been following their releases for almost two years, despite just owning a Wii nowadays, and I can say they release a lot more family-friendly games than M-rated games.

Their lifelong first-party franchises of Kirby, Zelda, Pokemon, Fire Emblem and of course Mario and all of its series spinoffs are pretty much alive. They still get new games, and Nintendo proudly shows off lots of things about them, even if in the end reviews will be mixed and some players left unsatisfied or utterly disappointed with the results.

A single game doesn't change anything. I can see why including characters from that game on a first-party game can upset or even enrage people, but well, that's how the gaming world works like now. See other franchises like Tekken or SoulCalibur and what they've done with guest characters over the years. But even then, Nintendo covers so many fields that it won't see it's reputation affected due to a small incident like this.

Nintendo is always looking for changes and improvements, and sometimes they flop magnificently. The Wii sparked a totally new way of playing which was ultimately copied by the competition, but the Wii U flopped enormously. They've now gone on to publish mobile games of their first-party franchises, and so far so good. They always had the tag of "not serving games for a certain audience" and so they attempted to correct that.

Can we blame Nintendo for being eager to introduce changes to an ever-evolving world like videogames? No. Can we blame them for choosing poorly or executing their ideas wrongly? Yes. But their reputation will stay there until they do away with all their family-friendly stuff or the M-rated games become more prominent, which I don't see happening.

Nintendo simply wanted to attract a portion of the players that were being drawn to the competition. They had two ways of doing this: more power and better graphics to finally match the competition, or include M-rated games in their library. They chose the latter, because they had other plans for their consoles and also probably wanted to keep up with the relatively simplistic build their consoles have always had.

Summarizing, I honestly think you're exaggerating things a bit too much. Bayonetta was released on the competition while the Wii U was in stores, so Nintendo attempted to revive it to draw in mature players. Unless this proves to be a major success, which doesn't seem the case, Nintendo will stick to their first-party family-friendly franchises you can't enjoy on other consoles.

EX Palen : I admit I was exaggerating their sudden support for M-rated games to a satirical degree, but that's because it has caused me so much emotional distress to the point that I destroy expensive equipment and even question living. Even though their now trying to get a mature audience to their consoles, their family products are the ones that sell millions of copies while their "mature" stuff just bites the dust and gets kicked under the rug. And yes, Bayonetta alone ruined Super Smash Bros. for me. Her universe is so dark, gruesome, morbid, disturbing, and overall edgy that it does greatly contradict the family-friendly tone of Super Smash Bros. for the wrong reasons. Also, Tekken and SoulCalibur are more mature franchises, whereas Super Smash Bros. was more like a family game prior to now, when it just became a mish-mash of random trash that tries to appeal to all. Yeah, Snake also has his fair share of M-rated games, but he does have some titles that aren't rated M. Furthermore, comparing Metal Gear Solid to Bayonetta is like comparing Die Hard to A Clockwork Orange; Metal Gear and Die Hard are just simply geared strictly towards adults and are unwelcoming to younger viewers but aren't exactly disturbing to grown-ups, whereas Bayonetta and A Clockwork Orange - although also geared strictly towards adults - does so for all the wrong reasons and are so dark, gruesome, morbid, disturbing, and overall edgy that any sane person regardless of age and wisdom would simply look at them with pure disgust and contempt. It's hard to explain, but there are two ways to appeal to grown-ups; the proper and actually mature way - which Metal Gear Solid does - that is simply more mature and is just geared strictly towards grown-ups while still not freaky and disturbing. And then there's the edgy and immature way - which Bayonetta does - which is just bloated with shock value, disturbing content, and is overall edgy. I'll try to keep the rest short, but seeing a representative of the former in a family game wouldn't hurt since it wouldn't hurt a child to learn about such a character/franchise, whereas seeing a representative of the latter in a family game would f*** up a young person's mind to learn about. Also, by having Bayonetta as their mascot for their exclusive "mature" games, they're mainly appealing to the edgy and immature wannabe grown-ups rather than actual mature grown-ups who know right from wrong.

Patrick Star : No, actually. She is my only example. But then again, she's their only exclusive M-rated title that is actually known by the public. And yes, if you like such a character, then you're automatically horny and edgy by default ruling. I shouldn't have to explain why...

So you have a post titled that Nintendo are a bunch of horny "mature" edgelords nowadays, and you acknowledge that Nintendo had M-rated games even in the SNES era but discount that because they were in general greatly overshadowed by family-friendly games.

Then you go on to complain about "a bunch of edgy half-assed M-rated games" and specifically Bayonetta. You say that she has mutated Nintendo into a two-faced adult entertainment business. You go on at length about "her games", frankly sounding like you've gone pretty in depth into them - that, or you're making things up as you go.

In short, you typed up an extended post to complain about one particular character who I, for one, had never even heard of before she showed up in Smash Bros. I don't follow Nintendo news a lot, but this is still true - if it were not for the latest Smash Bros, I would never have heard of her.

Fun fact: One PlatinumGames created Bayonetta as part of a four-game deal with Sega... in 2009. Nintendo picked it up for the Wii U in 2014 and the Switch in 2018 because it was getting rave reviews including a relatively rare 40/40 from Japanese gaming publication Famitsu. They got Bayonetta 2 and 3 for themselves - somehow, I'm not going to go digging through everything - but she was a hit well before Nintendo touched her.

yes while Nintendo has more M rated titles nowadays its the developers developing said rated titles for Nintendo not Nintendo themselves. very rarely does Nintendo make an M rated game themselves. in fact as a sort of still fan ( i haven't been a true fan of theres since the SNES days) i'm glad to see them release more adult titles
