The arrival of 3D graphics in the world of videogames prompted the all-time classics from the golden era to get a facelift. The new capabilities brought forth by the graphics and the powerful consoles of the mid 90s were the perfect mix for the classics to get on the spotlight once again, and even though their success wasn’t as great as back in time, they still produced challenging videogames in their immortal classic arcade style.

Frogger for PSX was one of such attempts. The classic from the early 80s was entirely revamped, staying true to its roots but with all the enhancements the videogame world had seen since. The game is indeed as challenging as ever, requiring a great dose of skill (and some luck as well) to fully complete it.

This guide will ease your way through the 33 levels this game has to offer. Levels are distributed within 9 different zones, each with its own unique motif. It’s a quite long journey, so let’s get going.

Basics

The game works like the classic arcade: Frogger has a time limit to recover the five froggies scattered through the level (colored Green, Red, Blue, Orange and Purple). To do that, Frogger will hop its way towards the froggies, and once he recovers one, he returns to the starting point of the level, in this game signaled by a target of sorts.

Getting hit by any obstacle/enemy, drowning in water or whatever other liquid element present, falling off the stage (or from a too high altitude, to be more exact) or simply running out of time will make Frogger lose one of its lives, which can be seen on the right inferior corner. If Frogger runs out of lives, it’s game over.

The game follows a scoring system reminiscent of arcade games. While there are several factors to count in your score, the important ones are that each recovered froggy is worth 500 points and you’ll get 100 points of bonus for every second remaining in the timer. Also, every time you reach a multiple of 10k points, you’ll receive an extra life, which can come in very handy at times.

One of the many additions to the game are Yellow frogs. These frogs are only available in one level of each zone, and when all of them are found, the last zone and the true ending of the game can be unlocked. They’re just bonuses to the level, so they don’t count as having retrieved one of the froggies. Also, they’re worth 1000 points, double that of the standard froggies.

Controls

Directional pad: Used to hop around. Frogger can only do one hop at a time, so forget about keeping any direction pressed. Each hop is worth 5 points, and consecutive hops without stopping can reward 50 points.

X button: Enables a Superhop in whatever direction Frogger is facing. The Superhop allows Frogger to reach high platforms and also jump over certain enemies and obstacles. Each Superhop is worth 10 points.

Square button: Heat-seeking tongue. Its only use is to eat bugs, but keep in mind it’s entirely necessary in a few levels (more information below in the Bugs section).

Circle button: Power Croak. Frogger will croak, and if any froggy is in the vicinity they’ll croak back at you, giving you a hint of their position. It has another use in one of the zones, but we’ll cover that when we reach it.

L2/R2 triggers: Move the camera around, R2 clockwise and L2 counter-clockwise. Much needed to get a different look at certain levels, and also so the natural movements of a few “transports” don’t get you facing in the wrong direction (by “transports” I mean animals or objects you can jump onto). One simple press and the camera rotates 90 degrees in the corresponding direction.

Bugs

There are 7 different bugs in the game, though I’ll be listing an 8th one because I wanted to properly mention it. There’s a 9th one unique to a single zone, so I’ll save it for later.

Standard bugs: The biggest and easiest to see bugs simply give you a boost in score. The boost can be noticeable in certain cases, depending on the color of the bug, matching or even surpassing the score for retrieving a froggy, so keeping Frogger’s belly full is recommended.

“Paper plane” butterflies: Like the name implies, they’re shaped like a paper plane and are simply another score boost, though not as noticeable. They’re also the only bugs constantly moving, the rest stay still wherever they are.

Time bugs: These bugs increase your timer a bit. These bugs are the reason why I said the heat-seeking tongue is necessary sometimes. They’re little flashing bugs, which denotes how many seconds they’re worth: 2 for the green one, 5 for the silvery-blue one and 10 for the golden one. Do not worry about massively eating these, they’re the only kind of bug that respawns every time you return to the start (either by dying or retrieving a froggy).

Flashing-red bugs: AVOID THESE AT ALL COSTS! The bugs flashing red can either reduce your score or, more importantly, greatly reduce your remaining time limit. Take their alarm-like flashing as a sing they’re not to be dealt with.

Frogger bug: Like you may be suspecting, this bug gives you an extra life. They’re very easy to see as they flash in several colors, but more often than not they’re out of the ideal path, so not always are they worth the risk.

Green grasshopper: This guy, one of the rare kinds of bugs, will allow Frogger to do Autohop. The Autohop allows you to keep hopping at great speed while holding down a direction, bypassing the “prohibition” encoded within the controls. The effects will go away once you return to the start, either by dying or retrieving a froggy.

Silvery-blue grasshopper: Another rare bug, this time granting the Quick Jump ability. With it, Frogger will double his speed, something very welcome in certain instances. The effects will go away once you return to the start.

Worm: The third rare bug gives Frogger the Super Tongue. After eating it, Frogger will now be able to double the range of its tongue to reach for bugs farther away. Once again, the effects will go away once you return to the start.

The Walkthrough

Now that we have covered all the background information, let’s get started with the walkthrough itself. Please note this is just my explanation of how I beat the levels, there may be faster or alternative methods I’m unaware of (or not skilled enough to pull off, I admit this kind of game isn’t my forte).

Each level will be explained in the order I think it’s easiest to beat, with the exception of the Yellow frog which will always go last, even if it can be encountered in the way of another froggy. Again, this is just my way of playing the levels, so no need to strictly follow it (one exception exists, though, and a couple more probably could as well). Also, each level will be preceded by some notes for a brief explanation, as well as noting any unique quirks the level might have.

The zones will also include a few notes, due to their unique themes. They aren’t properly named in-game (the levels are), so I’ll be giving them my own names based on their motif.

ZONE 1 – THE NOSTALGIA

I think the name is pretty self-explanatory. This entire zone consisting of five levels is simply a revival of the good old Frogger: the traffic, the logs over the river and the froggies lined up at the end. However, do not think for even a second that this zone is free of challenges.

All the levels feature the same layout, though as we progress they include a few more obstacles. All of them feature the froggies in the same order, from left to right: Green, Orange, Purple, Blue and Red

One quirk of this zone is the Female Frog we might find in the logs. This frog hops onto Frogger’s back, and when taken to safety by retrieving a froggy, rewards another 500 points. It’s more frequent in the very first level, though it can be seen in higher ones as well.

Level 1-1 – Retro Level 1
Time: 25 seconds

The five lanes of traffic are as follows: red pickups going left on the first, at the same speed as the purple cars on the third, bulldozers going right in the second, faster light blue cars going right in the fourth and big trucks going left in the third.

The river also has five rows: clusters of three turtles going left to start, then short logs on quick succession going right, then very long logs going right, then pairs of turtles going left and finally standard length logs going right. Be careful with the turtles, some have a more bluish shade which indicates they sometimes dive underwater, so try to avoid them if possible or don’t stay for long over them.

My recommendation is to retrieve the froggies from left to right. Since the last row of logs goes right, we can always go further in that direction and therefore the ones on the left side are technically slightly harder.

Level 1-2 – Retro Level 2
Time: 20 seconds

Same layout as before, but with denser traffic. The first two lanes now have faster cars, the third one can feature two cars in quick succession, which is a permanent occurrence in the fourth one, and the last one also has the trucks closer to each other.

The river layout is also sped up, with a notable change. The last row now can sometimes feature crocodiles as well as logs, so avoid jumping on their heads or you’ll be eaten up. Also, sometimes a crocodile’s jaws can appear where a froggy is, meaning you must avoid retrieving them until the hazard is gone.

Once again, better go from left to right. This time it’s more than recommended, given the new hazard blocking the way to certain froggies, so always better to have another to retrieve without needing to hop back a row.

Level 1-3 – Retro Level 3
Time: 30 seconds

Traffic is once again sped up. Now there can be two bulldozers in quick succession, and sometimes we can find three trucks in succession at the end, but the purple cars return to being separated like in the first level.

The river flow has also been sped up. Now, a snake will go left and right at the shore, so waste no time and jump onto the turtles before it touches you. Another snake may appear on the long logs of the third row, which also needs to be avoided. The crocodiles on the last row, as well as the jaws appearing over the froggies, are also present. A quirk of this level are the otters on the third row of the flow. They may attack the log you’re in, so jump to safety if you see them approaching.

Once again, like always, go from left to right. Since the third row of the river poses a big risk with the snakes and otters, there’s no problem in staying in the turtles (as long as they’re not the kind which dive) and going to the leftmost part to start selecting a hazard-free froggy to retrieve.

Level 1-4 – Retro Level 4
Time: 24 seconds

Traffic speeds up a notch again, with the first and third lane now often having two cars in quick succession and the last two always having three. The river features all the previous hazards, with the addition of otters now attacking the row of short logs as well, and appearing more frequently than before.

The strategy is again the same, but by this level the pace starts to get frantic to safely avoid all hazards and retrieve the froggies within the allotted time. Patience will be challenged for the first time here, and it surely won’t be the last one.

Level 1-5 – Retro Level 5
Time: 30 seconds

Traffic has slowed down, but it has become very heavy. Now there’s barely any space in the first three rows between each car, the fourth one has a stream of very fast cars and the last one has three trucks in succession going slowly to stall your way.

The river features all previous hazards, with two quirks: otters now also attack the first row of turtles, and the last row is now entirely made of crocodiles instead of logs.

The Yellow frog of this level is where the Female Frog tends to appear, in the second row of logs. It’s very easy to see it, but not so much to retrieve it. Try to retrieve another froggy with it, because the least number of tries to clear this level the better.

ZONE 2 – THE GARDEN

The first non-retro zone takes us to a garden. A big lake, mowers trimming the grass and any poor frog in their way, hungry and a bit clumsy dogs, birds and balloons taking Frogger away on an aerial trip… Things will start to get interesting here.

The first three levels are entirely unique, and the remaining two are just revisions of the first two, making them more challenging, tricky and dangerous. Bugs start to have a big presence, to the point of being almost a need to eat some, and Frogger will need to use all its skills to beat these five levels, with even some help of the player by rotating the camera.

Level 2-1 – Lily Islands
Time: 60 seconds

This level revolves around the lake, though three frogs are found in mainland, with even a dense road passing by. The high time limit is due to the fact Frogger will hop onto various transports (logs, turtles, birds and even lily pads serving as floating platforms), so there’s no time to waste.

Green: Hop onto the log passing by. You can patiently wait for it to do a U-turn and hop south onto another passing log. Again, patiently wait as you fill Frogger’s belly with score-boosting bugs and jump north to the turtles (or south to the island if you can’t progress further). The turtles will also do a U-turn into another set of turtles, going a bit faster, and these will do a U-turn too into the last set of turtles. Once these make a U-turn, hop into the shore, and rotate the camera if needed so Frogger faces north. Get into the road and stay in the lower lane, because its cars move very slowly to the left. Search for an opening slightly north, wait until the traffic clears on the northern lanes and make your way to the Green froggy.

Red: Follow the Green walkthrough until reaching the road. Here, follow the southern lane to the left nearly to the end of the level, and you’ll see an opening to the north. Once again, wait until the traffic clears on the northern lanes and make your way to the Red froggy.

Orange: Follow the Green walkthrough again until you hop onto land. If you head to the right, you’ll see a Green grasshopper, which you can eat to make this trip easier. When you hit the road, you must go right this time, and the center lane has fast orange cars heading right. The Autohop lets you travel safely through the center lane, so it’s a great advantage. Nevertheless, make your way towards the right end of the level, rotating the camera if needed, until you find an opening to the north, wait until the traffic clears and you’ll be able to retrieve the Orange froggy.

Blue: Hop onto the first log, wait until it does a U-turn and jump into the other log. This time, hop to the three lily pads on one side, if possible avoiding the center one because it’s spinning and can mess up with the direction of your hops. When a lazy log passes by, hop onto it and let it carry you. You’ll pass close to a piece of land hosting a Frogger bug, so be sure to eat it. You can also disembark in the opening to head for a Worm, but it’s not worth the risk (there’s another obstacle ahead) and the time. Leaving behind that piece of land, you’ll see a pathway of lily pads, follow them to retrieve the Blue froggy.

Purple: Follow the Blue walkthrough until hopping on the lazy log. This time, jump into the faster logs passing by, and then jump into the big piece of land. Go to the other side of the island, beyond the camera, and Superhop into the “mountain”, then head to the top and wait for the birds flying by. Hop into one, and they will take you to the platform where the Purple froggy awaits.

Level 2-2 – Bow Wow Falls
Time: 45 seconds

It could be said that this is another edge of the garden. There’s a road making a U-turn with three lanes, a river flow ahead, an elevated piece of land with obstacles and balloons, and lawnmowers on the lower part.

Three froggies are accessed through the elevated land, while the other two require fully crossing the road and getting into a river flow with three treacherous rows. Both sections are tricky, but the former is a bit easier and so you should start from there. Time bugs make a cameo appearance here, but they’re not crucial, and regular bugs have a decent presence in nearly all froggy walkthroughs.

Purple: Cross the road, minding the three lanes (first a slow orange car going left, then a faster red pickup going right and finally a very fast purple car), then turn left and go up the incline. Stay to the left to cross the bridge, and pay attention to the doghouses ahead. There’s one right after the bridge with a slow dog, another one slightly ahead with a faster dog, and a set of three consecutive further ahead, which feature dogs with different speeds. Manage to cross all of them, and you’ll see the Purple froggy slightly to the left of the ledge.

Blue: Follow the Purple walkthrough. You’ll see a balloon going left and right at the ledge. Jump on the balloon, eating as many bugs as you can to boost your score, and wait until it lines up with another balloon taking you further to the right. This second balloon takes you to a platform, from where you must jump onto a bird passing by and then onto the next piece of land. Superhop through the elevated platforms and retrieve the Blue froggy at the top.

Red: Follow the Blue walkthrough. Assuming you didn’t rotate the camera when jumping off from the bird, you might have noticed a balloon on the southern ledge. Jump on it, and after describing a U-turn, it will take you to a platform where the Red froggy awaits.

Green: Now we ignore the incline and continue further ahead, either by crossing the road again (recommended) or by following the middle lane going right. A mower goes from side to side on this ledge, so be wary of it. The river below features three rows, the first and the third are very fast but the middle one is awfully slow. Jump off the ledge onto a log or set of turtles passing by, then attempt to make it to the third row and jump to the piece of land in front of you. You will see a couple of swans circling a small island filled with bugs, including a Frogger bug. Jump onto a swan, let it take you to a small island with a mower and jump there. Carefully dodge the mower and retrieve the Green froggy right after it.

Orange: Follow the Green walkthrough, but this time let the swan take you to the piece of land further ahead. There’s a ledge down below with lots of bugs, including a Frogger bug and a silvery-blue Time bug, but if you want to finish things quickly, the Orange froggy awaits on a hidden elevated cave on the wall, so rotate the camera if needed to properly locate it and Superhop to retrieve it.

Level 2-3 – Mower Mania
Time limit: 50 seconds

This can be quite a stressful level. As the name implies, we’re on a big garden with mowers everywhere to be seen, with varying patterns and capable of going very fast. Watching and learning how the mowers move is crucial for this level, so be patient and observe carefully, a single misstep and Frogger will rest in pieces. Use the Power Croak if needed for further orientation.
This level is full of “paper-plane” bugs, and some regular ones too. I have noticed a couple of Frogger bugs as well, but since there’s very little margin on this level I recommend finishing as quickly as possible.

Orange: Go up, wait for two consecutive mowers to pass by and then go right as fast as you can. There are a couple of safe spots along the way, so if you won’t make it then use any of them. A third mower will cross vertically at some point, so mind it as well. After passing that third mower, go up and then left. Being very careful of the mowers, go up and then right, being wary of the vertically moving mower at the far end. Follow it up, there should be two mowers to the right, one faster than the other. Find your way through them, and one last mower will move counter-clockwise in circles. Follow it around and go down to retrieve the Orange froggy.

Purple: Follow the Orange walkthrough until the open area. Here, follow the passing mower and go left and then immediately up (there’s another mower going left and right here, so avoid it quickly). Clear one last mower moving left and right and hop to the Purple froggy.

Blue: Follow the Purple walkthrough. Instead of avoiding the mower going left and right, follow it until reaching an opening. Go up and avoid three mowers going left and right. A mower will move counter-clockwise in circles, round it and go up towards a mower moving exactly the same. Do the same maneuver, then avoid one last mower moving clockwise and hop to the Blue froggy.

Red: Follow the Blue walkthrough. When reaching the first mower moving in circles, go right and avoid a vertically moving mower. You will now enter a row of columns, each with a vertically moving mower. Go down in the first column, keeping the mower behind you and avoid it by going right at the bottom. Then, follow the next mower up the column and go right through an opening. Once again, go down while chased by the mower, you’ll see a big opening further down. Avoid the mower going left and right there, and hop your way to the Red froggy. There’s an alternate way by following the Orange walkthrough instead and accessing the columns from the left side, but I’m not sure if it’s easier or safer than this method.

Green: Back to square one for this froggy. Go left before reaching the twin mowers we’ve followed before. Follow the mowers here, using the safe spots when needed, and go left. Follow the mowers again and go down, minding a mower going left and right. Follow it and go up through the first opening. Mind a mower going left and right, and continue up until you find two mowers circling a flower pot of sorts (you can get here by following the Blue walkthrough, though I deem it more dangerous). Go left, and being wary of the lightning quick mower moving vertically, hop your way down to the bottom where the Green froggy awaits.

Level 2-4 – Spinning Lilies
Time limit: 60 seconds

A revision of the first level of this zone. More enemies, bugs and obstacles, faster transports, and all the lily pads serving as platforms are now spinning! The walkthrough is changed quite a bit, besides the aforementioned changes, so take your time to get used to this level.

Red: Jump on the log passing by, and quickly jump to the piece of land in front. Hop all the way up until reaching an elevated platform, and Superhop onto it (a silvery-blue Time bug is below, if you need it). Wait for a bird to fly by, jump onto it and let it carry you towards a platform atop a tree. Another bird will fly by the platform, so jump onto it. Soon, it will reach the platform of the Red froggy. Not sure why they placed the Worm there, but not like it matters.

Green: Hop onto the log passing by, and when it does a U-turn, jump into one of the lily pads. Wait for a log to pass by the other side, jump on it and then into the piece of land. Go to the other side, and using the logs, try to jump onto a turtle. When it does a U-turn, jump onto the swan passing besides it, and when it does a U-turn, jump atop another turtle. After that, jump into the piece of land, being wary of the doghouses and its tenants. Get to the road, and slightly up ahead you’ll see the opening with the Green froggy, but be extremely careful with the denser and faster traffic.

Orange: Follow the Green walkthrough up until passing the doghouses. If needed, head up to the junction road, safe of incoming traffic, and eat the silvery-blue Grasshopper for the Quick Jump. Follow the middle lane to the right, predominantly by rotating the camera left so the purple cars come from below it, until you see an opening to the left with the Orange froggy, avoid the traffic and hop to retrieve it. Ignore the opening on the other side containing tons of bugs, the road widens to four lanes here so it’s quite hard to cross it and there’s no point in wasting a life here.

Blue: Follow the Green walkthrough, but this time don’t jump off the second log until reaching the set of three lilies. Jump onto one of them and wait for a lazy log to pass by, jump on it and let it take you to another set of lilies. Be careful of which direction Frogger is facing atop the spinning platforms, and hop your way to the Blue froggy.

Purple: Follow the Blue walkthrough, and once you’re aboard the lazy log, jump onto a faster log passing by, and then onto a piece of land. Be extremely careful with the rotating mowers, and hop your way to the elevated platform, then Superhop onto it to get to the top. Wait for a bird to fly by, jump onto it and let it carry you towards an elevated plateau where the Purple froggy stands.

Yellow: Follow the Blue walkthrough. You might have noticed an opening in the piece of land it passes. Go through it, avoid the treacherous dog, and hop your way to the Yellow frog. If at all possible, make your way back to the point where you can jump onto another log and either go retrieve the Blue or Purple froggies.

Level 2-5 – Bow Wow Revenge
Time limit: 40 seconds

A revision of the second level. All transports, obstacles and vehicles have sped up, so it’s a lot trickier to travel through the level. The layout hasn’t been changed that much, but still it’s a much different challenge than before.

Purple: Cross the road, paying attention to the very fast stream of purple cars on the superior lane. Go left up the incline, and stay to the center to cross the bridge. The tenants of the doghouses move faster than ever before, the last one almost seems to be constantly moving from side to side without resting. Avoid the dogs as swiftly as possible, then you’ll see the Purple froggy slightly to the left of the ledge.

Blue: Follow the Purple walkthrough. The balloons now move in circles instead of left and right, so be careful when hopping between them. Jump on the first, then straight to the second, eat the silvery-blue Time bug and go right from there until you reach a piece of land. Mind the rotating mowers and Superhop your way to the Blue froggy at the top.

Red: Follow the Blue walkthrough. When you reach the piece of land, head to the right side, minding the mower, and hop onto the balloon. A golden Time bug is right where it makes a U-turn, so eat it as well or you won’t make it. The balloon will take you to the platform where the Red froggy stands.

Green: Ignore the incline and continue ahead, crossing the road again. Mind the mower, and cross the river like the last time. Just like then, hop onto one of the swans and let it take you to a piece of land with a mower, and the Green froggy is right behind it.

Orange: Follow the Green walkthrough, and wait for the swan to carry you to the piece of land right before it makes a full turn. You can retrieve a Frogger bug and boost your score by going further down, but the Orange froggy is right where it was in the other level, so Superhop to it.

ZONE 3 – THE AUTUMN FALLS

A zone with only two levels, but set in the beautiful environment of a forest when Autumn has arrived. The first level is almost featureless, except for the fact that it needs speed to be beaten, but the second one is full of various enemies and transports. It’s one of the most technical zones, and it will demand all of the player’s skill to successfully beat it.

Level 3-1 – Honey Bee Hollow
Time: 25 seconds

Like I said before, speed is crucial in this level. Not only because of the timer, but because of the beehives. When you get close to any of them, a swarm of bees will pursue you, and being bitten by them means losing a life. Leaving them behind is not impossible, but be very careful to maintain the speed and head into the correct directions, otherwise nothing will save you from the bee’s wrath.

Red: Go up towards the water, going around any tree stumps in the way, then immediately go right until you find a bridge. Cross it fully straight as fast as you can, and the Red froggy will be just up ahead. Alternatively, you can start by going left and following the walls, at the right speed you might get to the river and be able to go right without any bees pursuing you (at the cost of some time, of course).

Blue: Follow the Red walkthrough, but go left past the tree stump. You’ll see the Blue froggy close to the wall, right above a couple of beehives. You can also go left immediately after the bridge to avoid the beehive and go up after a few spaces, but this route is more recommended later on.

Purple: Follow the Blue walkthrough, if possible that secondary route I mentioned. The Purple froggy is just a few spaces away to the left of the Blue froggy.

Orange: Follow the Purple walkthrough, go fully left until reaching the wall and then head down for the Orange froggy.

Green: Follow the Orange walkthrough. If you feel like you won’t make it any further, follow the secondary route I mentioned at the start, for there’s a silvery-blue Grasshopper that will give you the Quick Jump for greater speed (always save it best for last, remember it’s a one-time bug only). Either way, the Green froggy is just a couple spaces down from the Orange froggy.

Level 3-2 – Canopy Capers
Time: 45 seconds

This level is much bigger, and the froggies are spread out a lot farther from each other. Patience and constant trial-and-error will be needed to clear this level, because learning the patterns of all enemies and transports, as well as determining when it’s safe to do some moves, can be quite annoying. Keep a good speed here too, you will need it for certain sections.

Blue: Rotate the camera with L2, then go left and up towards another branch. Wait for an owl to pass by, and use it to cross towards the “stairs” of falling branches. Stay on the right, and be wary of the pink birds flying around, as well as staying for too long on a single branch or it will fall down with you still over it. Once you reach a solid branch ahead, rotate the camera with R2 and go up. Being wary of the pink birds, manage to hop across the branches and mushrooms and cross the river. Be wary of the squirrel on the next log, then hop onto it and go right. Avoid the bird flying in circles, then hop right and then go down to retrieve the Blue froggy.

Orange: Rotate the camera twice, and head up towards the edge of the branch. When an owl passes by, hop onto it and cross to the suspended platform. There are three rows of squirrels, so avoid them and head right. Rotate the camera again with L2 to make things easier, and hop onto the owl flying below, which will take you to the platform where the Orange froggy awaits.

Red: Follow the Orange walkthrough, hopping to the platform the froggy was standing on. Get to the ground and rotate the camera with R2. Go left, to where the hedgehog-like creatures come from, and avoid them until you reach the platform where the Red froggy stands, then Superhop to retrieve it.

Green: Follow the Orange walkthrough again. Hop onto the platform where it stood and get to the ground. Rotate the camera twice, and head left then up towards a tree-tunnel that allows you to cross the river to the left. Superhop your way above the tunnel, then wait until the squirrels clear the path to follow a log down, then head to the log on the right and hop right to retrieve the Green froggy.

Purple: Follow the Orange walkthrough once more. This time, ride the owl towards the other side of the river, and hop down to a solid branch. Rotate the camera twice and hop up across the falling branches, avoiding the bird on the first two. The fifth branch is perpendicular, follow it until you set yourself right above another falling branch with an edge to the right. An owl will fly by it (much faster than the ones before), and ride it until reaching a set of solid branches with squirrels on them. Try to avoid them and go straight to the Purple frog up ahead.

Yellow: Follow the Blue walkthrough, but hop past the froggy so you fall down to the ground. Here, enter a series of tree-tunnels, being wary of the squirrel, and you’ll eventually find the Yellow frog. It can also be accessed via the Green walkthrough after exiting the tree-tunnel that crosses the river, and this one may be better since you can come back to retrieve this froggy whereas you cannot jump back to where the Blue is.

ZONE 4 – THE MACHINERY

A zone full of mechanical levels, with switches and moving platforms all around. A very technical zone where learning the levels and the functions of all switches and platforms is the key to victory.

This zone features three levels, each being unique in their own way. There are very few obstacles in this zone, but the risk of falling off is much greater. Also, retrieving the froggies is already complicated enough on its own, so be sure to come here with a good stack of lives if you’re pursuing success.

Level 4-1 – Scorching Switches
Time: 40 seconds

Another level packed up in a rather small environment, but still highly technical. Frogger will always move on elevated platforms over a stream of lava, so falling off leads to a scorching end. There should be enough time limit to take your time and think your moves twice to avoid such end, and also to get used to the theme of the later levels.

Purple: Hop up to the very first switch, which activates a horizontally-moving platform. Once activated, hop to the rotating platform in either side and make your way towards a ledge with another switch. Forget about it and hop directly to the moving platform when it passes by, then hop up to the rotating platforms and then left towards the Purple froggy.

Red: Hop right to the rotating platform, and make your way to the ledge with the switch. Activate it, then hop back to the rotating platform and hop right to the next ledge. Hop onto the vertically-moving platform you just activated, taking you to another ledge. Hop your way ahead through the rotating platforms, and the Red froggy will be at the end of the path.

Blue: Do the same as with the Red froggy but this time head to the platform on the left instead.

Orange: Follow either the Red or Blue walkthrough. On the last set of rotating platforms, head left (Red) or right (Blue) instead of continuing ahead, then use the rotating platforms further to the side you chose and hop onto the ledge up front, the Orange froggy is just a few spaces away.

Green: Follow the Orange walkthrough. Activate the switch one space below where the froggy was, then return to the rotating platforms. Hop onto the vertically-moving platform when it passes right by your side, and let it take you to the Green froggy.

Yellow: This one’s pretty easy to see. Follow the Purple walkthrough, the Yellow frog will be in the center platform of the last set of rotating platforms described there.

Level 4-2 – Platform Madness
Time: 60 seconds

Yet another level packed on a small environment, but this time distributed in “layers” of sorts. Frogger will start atop the level, and from there on it will have to descend through the platforms to retrieve the froggies. The path here is very clearly made, but the trick is that the platforms open up a few seconds after Frogger hops onto them, meaning you’ll also need speed to be constantly on the move and avoid falling down to a scorching end.

Green: Hop your way towards the second solid platform (it’s dark colored instead of white, so they can be easily differentiated). Rotate the camera with R2 and pay attention to the moving boxes to the left. Find a clear path through them, for the Green froggy is on the far left corner past the boxes.

Red: When reaching the second solid platform, this time go right. It’s a big jump, but Frogger will survive it. Activate the two switches, but forget about them because we’re going on the opposite direction. Hop down towards another solid platform, minding the box passing by, and when the path clears, head right and then up towards the Red froggy.

Orange: Follow the Red walkthrough. This time, activate the switches and, when the path clears, jump onto the vertically-moving platform. Wait until it lines up with the horizontally-moving platform on the left, then hop onto it and let it carry you towards the Orange froggy.

Purple: Follow the Orange walkthrough. When landing on the spot the froggy was, head down to activate a switch and immediately hop onto the platform it activates, which will make you descend. Hop left and activate another switch, then hop to the moving platform it activated. Now, you have to activate all three switches down from that platform, and remember that hopping on an activated switch will turn it off. Try to line up the moving platforms (the second one is extremely complicated) and let the third one descend so you can retrieve the Purple froggy to the left.

Blue: Follow the Orange walkthrough, and this time activate the switch located at the other side. Rotate the camera with L2 for better timing, you’ll see a vertically moving platform on a much lower level. Make your way through the platforms at the right timing to hop onto that platform, then let it carry you as you rotate the camera to its original position. Hop up towards a set of platforms, then quickly hop your way through the spiral and activate a switch for the final platform below. Manage to hop onto it, and it will carry you to the Blue froggy.

Level 4-3 – Lava Crush
Time: 60 seconds

The final level of this zone features a slightly bigger environment, and the most complicated one. Lots of switches, several obstacles and a few rotations of the camera are needed to traverse this level. It can seem very complicated at first, but as you get the hang of how everything works and moves, you’ll slowly but steadily find your way out of this.

Purple: Go straight ahead, making your way through the molten rocks coming from the sides. Once you reach the junction, head right, then rotate the camera with L2 so you can see where the froggy is. Head left, and watch out for the first falling box. Hop onto it, let it carry you above and then jump right over the boxes to reach the Purple froggy.

Red: Follow the Purple walkthrough. Now, instead of jumping onto the first box, make your way towards the end of the path by avoiding all the boxes. Once here, rotate the camera twice with R2 so you can see the pattern of the falling squared platforms. Jump onto the first one ahead, then go up and right to retrieve the Red froggy.

Orange: When reaching the junction, this time go left and rotate the camera with R2 when reaching the leftmost spot. Traverse right avoiding the boxes, like you did in Red, but this time, before going to the falling platforms, go backwards once so you hop onto the final box, letting it carry you upwards like you did in Purple. Hop right to safety, then make your way towards the Orange froggy.

Blue: Follow the Orange walkthrough, and this time head to the end of the path and rotate the camera twice with L2 to repeat the process you followed in Red. Jump onto the first platform, then go down and left to retrieve the Blue froggy.

Green: Head to the junction and pay attention, because this one’s complicated as hell. Go left, rotate the camera with R2 and activate the first switch. Keep going right and activate the second switch. By now, the first platform you activated is passing right besides you, so hop onto it. Let it carry you back to the first switch, but hop to land earlier and deactivate the first switch, then return to the platform. The second platform you activated should be approaching, more easily seeable if you rotate the camera with L2. Once on the new platform, hop and activate the switch you pass by, making sure of eating the Time bugs just to stay safe. Hop onto the platform moving from side to side, and let it carry you right towards two platforms, again eating the Time bugs for safety. Rotate the camera with L2 once you hop to land, then head left to activate the switch, and come back to the platform standing still. Return the camera to the original position with R2, then wait for the newly activated platform to pass by you. Hop onto it, let it carry you up towards a safe spot and hop onto it. Wait for another platform to pass by, hop onto it and let it carry you left. You will eventually reach the spot with the Green froggy, so retrieve it to finish.

ZONE 5 – THE CAVES

Things will get creepy here, as this zone is darkened and with bats and tarantulas roaming around. This zone hosts three levels, each unique in its own way, but all share the common trait that, each time you restart the level, the visibility is lowered gradually. This is not a zone where you can try too many times or else it becomes increasingly harder, not to say nearly impossible, to know where you’re heading and what is ahead of you.

Something that will help you in this zone is the Power Croak. When using it, the level lights up for a second, giving you a glimpse of your surroundings. Another thing that will help you is the 9th bug I spoke about in the initial sections, the Bright bug and its more powerful counterpart, the Brightness bug. The former lights up a bit the stage, slightly countering the effects of a restart, while the latter dispels the darkness entirely. None of these bugs re-spawn, so be extremely careful to not eat too many of them at once because you might need them later on.

Level 5-1 – Dark Dark Cavern
Time: 60 seconds

The first dark level isn’t too complicated, if it wasn’t for the lack of brightness. Also, it is more shaped like a maze than the average Frogger level, giving more uniqueness to this zone. For that reason, each walkthrough will include which exact steps to take rather than the directions to follow, since there technically is just one ideal path towards the intended destination.

Green: Go 1 hop left, 5 hops up, 1 hop left, 4 hops up (careful with the tarantula moving sideways on the third hop), 3 hops left, 2 hops up (a slower tarantula moves sideways on the second hop, pay attention to it), 1 hop left, 4 hops up, 1 hop right, 2 hops up, 1 hop left, 1 hop up, 2 hops left and finally 2 hops up to retrieve the Green froggy.

Orange: Go 1 hop left, 5 hops up, 1 hop left, 4 hops up (careful with the tarantula moving sideways on the third hop), 3 hops left, 2 hops up (a slower tarantula moves sideways on the second hop, pay attention to it), 1 hop right, 2 hops up, 2 hops right, 3 hops up, 1 hop left, 2 hops up, 1 hop left and finally 2 hops up to retrieve the Orange froggy.

Blue: Follow the Orange walkthrough, when you reach the spot where the froggy was standing, go 4 hops right and you’ll find the Blue froggy.

Purple: Follow the Orange walkthrough again, and when you reach the spot where the froggy was, this time go 3 hops right and 2 hops down to retrieve the Purple froggy.

Red: Follow the Blue walkthrough (yes, Blue), when you reach the spot where the froggy was, go 4 hops right, 1 hop down and 4 hops right to retrieve the Red froggy.

Level 5-2 – Frogger Goes Skiing
Time: 52 seconds

Probably the most unique level in the whole game. In here, Frogger can’t hop or Superhop, he simply slides down through this level, and it’s also impossible to rotate the camera (not like it’s needed anyway). You can control Frogger’s direction with left and right to veer, increase his speed via the direction Frogger is facing (up in the first and third slides, down in the second) and decrease his speed via the opposite direction.

The allocation of the froggies is also unique. Due to the level being simply three big slides connected by two highly banked U-turns, each froggy is just a bit further away down the slide. It is for that reason that you must follow this walkthrough IN REVERSE ORDER, starting with Green and ending with Red. This is because I’ll be listing the froggies in the order you encounter them, but due to this zone’s decreasing brightness, you must travel the farthest distance when there’s more light.

Red: Slide down the level, making sure to avoid the couple tarantulas at the widened section. You will pass by a ramp, which is optional to take, then you’ll face three tarantulas going in circles. After them, another ramp is on the center, right after which awaits the Red froggy.

Orange: After passing the spot of the Red froggy, take the U-turn to the right and continue sliding. Stay to the left side, for the Orange froggy is not far away from the turn you just exited.

Blue: After passing the spot of the Orange froggy, stay to the right side to avoid a ramp. Ahead of it, there’ll be a tarantula going in circles and a bat moving in the same pattern. Keep going down and speed up through the ramp in the middle to make it to the next zone. The Blue froggy is slightly to the left after landing.

Purple: After passing the spot of the Blue froggy, continue down and take the U-turn to the right. Keep sliding and stay to the right to avoid a ramp, for the Purple froggy is just a bit farther.

Green: After passing the spot of the Purple froggy, slide past a bat moving in circles, and stay to the left to avoid a ramp. Further ahead there are three tarantulas moving in circles, much faster than the ones before. Slide past them, speed through the ramp in the middle and jump to the next zone, where the Green froggy awaits nearing the end of the road.

Level 5-3 – Webs Cavern
Time: 38 seconds

Another maze-like level, but this time much more complicated. Swarms of enemies, very different roads, and a Yellow frog awaiting on a separate path from nearly every other froggy. This one will need patience and several tries, and remember the decreasing brightness.

Blue: Go 1 hop right, then follow the bats 8 hops up and hop left once for a safe spot. When the bats clear the path, hop once to the left, then go 2 hops up and 2 hops left. The camera will rotate on its own here, so return it to its previous setting manually. Go 5 hops left, then face towards the slope and Superhop twice. Entering the maze, go 1 hop up, 5 hops left, 1 hop up, 1 hop right, 1 hop north (careful with the tarantula moving sideways here), 2 hops right, 1 hop up (another tarantula here, which goes to the left and then up), 2 hops left, 2 hops up (you cross the path of another tarantula, pay attention), 1 hop right, 1 hop up, 1 hop left and finally 2 hops up to retrieve the Blue froggy.

Purple: Go 1 hop right, then follow the bats 6 hops up. Here, you can hop right to stay safe, then continue heading up towards the wall and then hop twice to the right and Superhop three more times in the same direction. Entering the maze, go 1 hop up, 5 hops left, 1 hop up, 1 hop right, 2 hops up, 1 hop left, 2 hops up, 1 hop right, 1 hop down, 1 hop right, 2 hops up, 1 hop left, 1 hop up, 5 hops right and finally 2 hops up to retrieve the Purple froggy.

Red: Go 1 hop right, then follow the bats 22 hops up (there are safe spots along the way, but better to go as fast as you can), then 1 hop right and 1 hop up for a safe spot. When the bats clear the path, go 1 hop left, 2 hops up and 1 hop right to stay safe. Eat the Brightness bug just above you, then go 4 hops up (avoiding the tarantulas going left), 2 hops left, 1 hop up and 10 hops left (following a tarantula). The Red froggy will be just 1 hop up away from you.

Orange: Go 1 hop up, Superhop twice without changing directions, then go 1 hop up, 1 hop west and 1 hop north before entering the maze. From here, go 8 hops left, 1 hop down, 1 hop left, 1 hop down, 1 hop left, 4 hops down and finally 4 hops right to retrieve the Orange froggy.

Green: Go 2 hops right (mind the bats passing by), then go 3 hops up and Superhop twice without changing direction, before entering the maze. From here, go 2 hops right, 1 hop up, 1 hop right, 1 hop down, 5 hops right, 3 hops down, 3 hops right, 2 hops down, 4 hops left and finally 1 hop up towards the Green froggy.

Yellow: Go 1 hop right, then follow the bats 22 hops up like in Red. Then, go 10 hops right and 9 hops up. You’ll enter a closed zone with two tarantulas circling it, and also lots of bugs to eat. Manage to do all 9 hops up as mentioned without being touched by the tarantulas, then go 1 hop left and Superhop to retrieve the Yellow froggy (rotate the camera with R2 if you need help locating it).
