Here's a review on Pokken Tournament DX that was released on the Nintendo Switch on September 22nd, 2017. This was a remaster/port of the original Pokken Tournament game that was released 1 1/2 years ago on the Wii-U. When the Wii-U flopped, Nintendo wanted to bring their popular Pokemon fight game onto the Switch and let people duke it out with their favorite Pokemon against other trainers, either by single player, or by battling online.

Onto the review of Pokken Tournament DX

Graphics...

Although majority of the graphics hasn't really much changed than we seen with the Wii-U version, unless you're one of those "detailed" type of people, and you'll notice that the screen resolution has updated slightly, although when you switch to either tabletop mode or handheld mode, you'll basically have the same resolution from the Wii-U version, which is a big improvement from the Wii-U version.

Moving on from the whole difference between the Wii-U version and the Switch version, the Graphics from the game itself, it has a semi-realistic look towards all of the Pokemon that are used in the game, like for an example, with me being a Lucario main on Pokken Tournament DX, you can really make out all the details that were put into the Pokemon, such as all the detailed fur, the sharp looking spikes, and the bright aura it uses, I just really love the complete details that Nintendo has put into this game and I love it.

Also, for the setting of the Ferrum region, it also looks quite detailed as well, anything between the snowy Old Ferrum Town (Winter), to the Colorful looks of Tellur Town (Autumn), To the lively looks of Neos City in both the day time and the night time. It's a fantastic look.


As for the Graphics, I give it a perfect 10 out of 10, I just love the semi-realistic look that they give these Pokemon, and the crisp looks of the battlefields

Sound/Music...

For the Sound Effects, I really like the sound effects in the game, it has brought most of the sound effects from the Core Pokemon games with a few new additional sounds added in as well, the fighting sounds when you punch, kick, grab, or any other moves, it comes out quite clearly. 

As for the Music, I think the music in the game is quite amazing as well, like all the stages you pick for your battles, it really fits the stages quite well like the spooky themes for the Haunted House and the Mystery Carnival to the Amusement Park theme of Diggersby Land, to the city themes of Neos City. And it's not just the stages I like when it comes to music, but I really enjoy the menu music as well.

I give the Sound & Music an 8 out of 10, I love the music that is provided, and the sound effects were quite alright as well.

Addiction Level...

Well, I have to say, the Addiction level is up there, although not as high as a typical Pokemon game, but it is quite addicting though. Like they have been times where I want to pop in Pokken Tournament DX in my Nintendo Switch and do a few Pokken Battles, either as single player or hop online and challenge others to battle, and no matter if you win or lose, and no matter if you clime up the ranks or drop down in the ranks, you can't stay away from Pokken Tournament DX, even if you rage quit on the game, trust me, I have done this a few times where I drop my Joy-Cons and don't want to play this game ever again, and then later that day, I pick up the Joy-Cons again and turn Pokken Tournament DX back on again and keep on going.

For the Addiction Level, I got to give it a 9 out of 10, not as addicting as a core Pokemon game, but still highly addictive though.

The Storyline...

Probably As for the Storyline of Pokken Tournament, there isn't really a whole lot of a storyline towards the game, if you start the Ferrum League, you start up going up the ranks, and in like typical fight games, you start out at "Rank D", and you got to go up to "Rank C", then "Rank B", then "Rank A", and finally, get to "Rank S", and you do your absolute best to clime up the ranks. But where the whole storyline starts taking place is a corrupted MewTwo called "Shadow MewTwo" keeps on interfering the entire Ferrum League battles which soon, it starts getting way out of control at a point that the league has to stop battles until you to get the whole Shadow MewTwo situation under control, and once you get it all taken care of, you resume your Ferrum League battles until you become the Ferrum League Champion.

So, for the storyline of the game, I do have to give it a 4 out of 10, the reason behind the low-middle score is because of the little storyline they tell, but not much, if they made a little bit of a bigger story, then it would of ranked a little higher

Depth...

With the Depth of Pokken Tournament, you have a selection of 23 different character which 21 of them are starting characters and 2 DLC characters to choose from, and with 21 stages to choose from, although a few of the stages, you have to unlock throughout the Ferrum League. You also have 18 different pair of support Pokemon you can also choose from (16 starting Pokemon pairs and 2 DLC Pokemon pairs), which can help you out by recovering some lost HP, to giving you positive status effects, or hurt your opponents such as attacking them, giving them negative status effects, to disabling their Support or Synergy.

Also, you have different modes to choose from like the Ferrum League (like I mentioned), Patrice, Single Battle (where you battle against the CPU), Local Battle (where you battle with your real life friends and family), Online Battle (where you connect to the internet and battle with anyone across the world, to My Town where you can customize your avatar, change your Pokemon, and other settings.

For the Depth, I give it a 8 out of 10, it does provide a fair amount of content to choose from.

Difficulty/Gameplay...

The Difficulty of Pokken Tournament, it isn't really that bad, it's what you would expect with a typical fighting game, it starts out quite east, and then it challenges you over time, like when you battle in the Ferrum league, you might end up finding yourself winning 5 of those matches you get at a time, and when you battle in that Rank's tournament, they are quite east where you have no problem, but then over time, you will start losing a match or two, which once you get to this point, that is where you really got to start getting to the Pokemon battling.

As for the Gameplay, it's what you would of also expect in a fighting game, you start out with the character you selected, and you battle your opponent, and you plan out your gameplan for you opponent. Also, What makes Pokken Tournament different than other fighting games is the Phases, which goes between the 3D fighting style in Field Phase, and 2D fighting in Duel Phase, and to change the phases, you have to perform a special move to do a switch, also another feature introduced in the game is something called "Synergy" which once you fill it up, you can perform a "Burst Attack" which is a special move that can do huge damage towards your opponent which even 50% of the time, you can knock your opponent out with these moves, but use it wisely because you can only use it once per fill up 


As for the Difficulty and the Gameplay, I give this game a 6 out of 10, because it can be quite difficult at times, especially at the end, but most of the time, you won't have any problems with the difficulty.

Overall...

Overall, I do got to say, Pokken Tournament is an interesting game to try out if you're both into Fighting games and Pokemon, it provides the game specs of the Fighting genre combining all of the characters from the Pokemon franchise, this would be a perfect game if you're into both. It provides a lot of gun that will be quite entertaining.

Overall, I give this game a final score of 8.8 out of 10, it is a great game, and one of the top side games in the Pokemon franchise, and personally, you will enjoy this game a whole lot if you give it a try.

Pokken Tournament is one of my favorite fighting games. And I don't even own it. I borrow it from the library from time to time, and wow, is it a rush! I'm not someone who does a lot of competitive stuff, and I would love to put in the work to become one of the top players.

But I also have other priorities. Priorities that are more important. So I'm pleased enough to just get better at the game.
