Sorry for the late reply, I'm still interested in this. Before I spend my points, for what are BP used?

m0ssb3rg935 : The BP are for badges, much like in Paper Mario (or in the first Paper Mario anyway -- I've never played the others). I haven't made any officially yet, but some examples would be things like "+500 HP", "+1 Attack", or "+1 Speed". Later badges will obviously be more powerful and some will have effects that help the entire team or debuff enemy stats.

To clarify how you'll get them: you'll have chances to buy some, but most will either be found or obtained as a drop from an enemy.

You'll be able to equip as many badges as you want, so long as you have enough BP to cover their costs (The more powerful the badge, the higher the BP cost), which is why high BP would be a good thing. It all comes down to your play style though.

supernerd117 : Sorry, I was sick and kind of lost track of everything until a day or two ago.

So far only three have said anything (counting you). I'll go ahead and get the opening set up tonight or tomorrow morning and get the game started then. If anyone wants to join in later they can.

Alright now let's start this test. We'll use a smaller version of the full game (All rules will be in play, but the board and adventure will be much smaller), and adjust enemies and rules as needed. Please feel free to offer suggestions as we go, and let me know what you like or dislike about the new setup.

______________________________

Times are dark in the Arei kingdom. An evil force from worlds unknown has descended upon Earth, and while most are fighting it, with typically futile efforts, a few kingdoms have embraced the opportunity their invasion provided. Offering them peaceful surrender in exchange for their lives and integration into the new world they intend to make. The corrupt rulers of these lands, power hungry men, intend also to increase in glory by being sub-rulers in the newly formed kingdom, sitting under the monsters that will run the world upon domination.

Amidst all of the turmoil and chaos, the kingdom of Arei has stood firm in it's resolve to defend it's people and their home, but of late the number of kingdoms surrendering their power has increased, and with their own fellow men siding with the invaders, the Arei kingdom has finally begun succumbing to the assaults. The king has been slain, and the castle claimed. The only hope left for the kingdom is the forces that remain from the king's armies, and a few scattered brave who seek to defend their people against this cruel new threat.

Among those scattered brave emerge some rather surprising combinations of heroes and heroines. Ragtag groups with little to no official training, and even less in common with one another, save their common desire to see the land, and eventually the world, rid of this new threat and restored to it's former glory.

This is the story of one such group.

Akira, a scholar of various studies. His primary battleground has always been that of the mind, using knowledge to overcome the obstacles in his way, and defeat his opposition. His intelligence proves vital to his companions and their journey. And while using physical force isn't his preferred solution to trouble, he isn't at all adverse to the idea when it proves the only option.

Bob, a food tester turned court mage. His powers and knowledge of the so called magics are invaluable in the battle against these fiends that seem to exist by different rules than humanity. He can see through their erroneously labeled "magic" abilities, and meet them on their own level. He wields the power of the elements more aptly than most others of his kind, and uses it in every way imaginable to destroy the new threat before them. He also makes delicious corn based snacks to boost morale.

Alicia, a warrior like no other. Her natural battle prowess combined with her unofficial training under a retired military captain of legendary status, Gathron, and her recent battle experience gained from her campaign against a captured guard tower which she and a handful of others had successfully liberated, make her the driving force of sheer strength and battle skill that the team needs when threatened with physical opposition. She champions the way, leading the charge on the frontlines while her allies provide the cover and support needed to help her attacks be their most effective.

They're not the refined bunch of warriors one would expect to appear in desperate times such as these, but they're the kind of heroes the land needs to appear. Together they will topple the forces of evil that threaten the land, and liberate it once more. Or die trying.

(end of cheesy intro)

As they begin their journey to the castle, our heroes soon meet opposition, with the first enemy forces they encounter taking the form of three of the beings from the invading darkness. Their skin black as night, contrasts starkly with their bright, almost glowing, green eyes. They wear crude armor and wield the most basic of blades. They shouldn't present much of a challenge, but they aren't to be ignored either.

[initiate battle]

Info: this battle will serve as a bit of a tutorial. The only time I will bog the game down with explanations is when something happens for the first time, so be sure to pay attention when the explanations appear.

Turn order:

Akira (Palen)
Alicia (Eniitan)
Bob (supernerd117)
Dark soldier 1
Dark soldier 2
Dark soldier 3

Dark soldier 1, 2, & 3 stats:
Attack: 2
Defense: 2
Charm: 1
Intelligence: 1
Speed: 1

HP: 3,000
Ki: 1,000
BP: 10

Info: How to take your turn.
Each player plays each turn. To do so, simply say what you wish to do in your post. I will then calculate the results and post them the next day if at all possible.

Actions you can perform are as follows:
Attack: This is your character's basic attack, and the damage it deals is determined by your equpiment, equipped badges, and attack stat, as well as the enemy's defense, equipment, and actions.

Defend: This lets you reduce the amount of damage you receive from any and all attacks performed on you between the time you use it and your next turn. Ideally you won't use this often, but it can be helpful when the enemy is building up a strong attack, or when you need to stall.

Skill: This lets you use special attacks or other abilities (such as healing or buffing) in exchange for Ki.

Ki attack: This lets you infuse your basic attack with Ki, increasing the damage you deal. Like skills, this depletes your Ki levels by a set amount. The exact amount of Ki consumption is determined by the level of attack you wish to use (more on this later), and your Ki efficiency (more on this later).

That's a lot to take in, so feel free to ask if you have any questions, or simply try things out and learn from the experience.

EX Palen :
All of Akira's current action choices use only one turn's worth of wait time, and his speed is four times higher than the enemy's, so you can choose two actions (1 speed to match the enemy's, and 1 to perform an action, so 2 speed equals one chance to act before them). Note that your actions will be performed in the order you list them.

•Attack:
•Defend: [1] Level one: decreases all damage received this turn by %10.
•Skill: [1] Study: observe the enemy and predict their attack pattern and abilities. Boosts defense against the target by 10% for the duration of the battle. Cost: 500 Ki.
•Ki attack: [1] Level one: increases damage by 20%. Uses 400 Ki.

Eniitan :
Alicia has three times the enemy's speed. She will be able to perform one action this round, and two next (if the battle lasts two or more turns).

•Attack:
•Defend: [1] Level one: decreases all damage received this turn by %10.
•Skill: [1] Heated blade. Infuses your weapon with an intense heat, adding additional fire damage to the attack. Cost: 500 Ki.
•Ki attack: [1] Level one: increases damage by 20%. Uses 400 Ki.

supernerd117 :
Bob has the same speed as the enemies, which means he can act before they do each turn.

•Attack:
•Defend: [1] Level one: decreases all damage received this turn by %10.
•Skill: [1] Gust. Harnesses the power of the air to generate a strong gust of wind that staggers the enemy, reducing their attack and defense by 10% each for one turn. Cost: 500 Ki.
•Ki attack: [1] Level one: increases damage by 20%. Uses 400 Ki.
Alright now let's start this test. We'll use a smaller version of the full game (All rules will be in play, but the board and adventure will be much smaller), and adjust enemies and rules as needed. Hmmm, this test will surely be complicated, too many variables to consider and so many possible scenarios...

If I got everything right, I can choose two actions to perform before my enemies have their shot. I'm matched with my enemies in terms of attack and defense, but I have the highest charm and speed of my team. I could probably rely in those stats to evade battles and/or attacks, if we have a pre-set table of values which could indicate how much more speed/charm you must have over your opponent to succeed, but I'm guessing that no matter the value it all depends on dice rolls.

Since we're just starting, I guess I'll start with Ki Attack performed on Dark Soldier 1 and Defend. I have more than enough Ki, so better to test out how it works at the start so I can make a dent on the opponent's defenses and then exploit that advantage to my favor. I was tempted to use my skill, but my partners will do good on their own this first turn due to their heightened defense.

I'm glad the game went live at this timing. Life was getting very busy, and this will help me cool down a bit. Also, this reminded me I'd do good if I passed by Discord a bit more often xD

Info: which player the enemy attacks is random until they have been attacked. Their rage toward a player increases every time they're attacked by them, thus increasing their likelihood of attacking them.

EX Palen :
I'll place an explanation of the system at the end of this post. For what it's worth though, the majority of the effectiveness of an attack is stat based rather than dice based this time.

Akira uses Ki attack on Dark Soldier 1: deals 1,676 damage.

Akira defends.

Stat changes this turn:
Ki -400 (5,400)

Damage breakdown: 1,000 base damage, 500 from attack stat, 300 from added Ki, -72 from roll, -52 from enemy's defense.

Let me know if you want these sorts of breakdowns on your turns or not.

Eniitan :
Alicia attacks Dark Soldier 1: deals 2,667 damage.

Dark Soldier 1 is defeated!

Damage breakdown: 1,000 base damage, 1,750 from attack stat, -83 from enemy's defense.

Let me know if you want these sorts of breakdowns on your turns or not.

Dark Soldier 2 attacks Bob: deals 1,605 damage.

Stat changes: Bob - 1,605 HP (1,309/3,000).

Dark Soldier 3 attacks Alicia: deals 1,297 damage.

Stat changes: Alicia -1,297 HP (2,703/4,000).

supernerd117 : You missed your turn this round. You might want to be careful next round, as your HP dropped pretty low.

System breakdown:

Attacks have base damage.
Damage is multiplied by attack level (×0.25 per point), equipment, and badges.
Dice also affect damage. First a "fate" die is rolled to determine if damage power is increased or decreased (a fate die has two + sides, two - sides, and one blank side). If a + is rolled, the attack strength is increased, if a - is rolled, attack strength is decreased, and if a blank is rolled, no change is made to the damage dealt.
Next a ten sided die is rolled, and one percent of the damage is added (if the fate die landed on a +) or taken away (if the fate die landed on a -) for each point shown on the roll result of the ten sided die. This damage change is applied after the other attack strength modifiers, rather than the base value.

Example:
Player's attack starts off at 1,000 damage, but their stats and equipment boost it to 3,000. They then roll a +10. Their 3,000 damage is now 3,300 damage.

Defense:
Defense negates damage received from attacks. Defense is calculated based on defense stats, equipment, and badges. Die rolls affect defense as well, in a similar manner to attack rolls.
Each defense stat point adds a value of 0.25% to each point on the die. The most damage that can be negated from any given attack is 50%. Exceptions to the negation cap are: special event rules, and buff/debuff bonuses.

Note that a ten sided die is used for defense rolls as well.

Evasion:
Each speed stat point adds 1% to the odds of evading an attack. However, for every speed point an attacker has, the likelihood of the defender evading the attack drops by one point.

Example:
Player has 5 speed. This would equate to a 5% chance of evasion.
Enemy has 1 speed, which increases his/her likelihood of landing their attack. This is done by subtracting their speed total from the player's speed total (5% - 1% = 4%).

Note that a character's evasion chance can never be less than 1% unless the attack description guarantees a successful hit, nor can it ever be greater than 33%.

An RNG is used to determine the success of evasion, with possible values from 1-100. With one speed point, the RNG test must result in a 1 to evade, with two points it must result in either a 1 or 2, with three it must result in a 1, 2, or 3, and so on.

Glancing blows:
While a character's RNG test must land on an exact number to evade an attack, if the number yielded by the RNG is within two of the necessary number for evasion, the attack is rendered a "glancing blow", reducing the damage by an additional 25%.

Example:
Player's speed stat is 3, so a 1, 2, or 3 is needed to evade an attack. Their RNG test results in a 4 (or 5), so while they do not evade successfully, they do receive 25% less damage than they would have otherwise.

Charm:
Charm is used mostly outside of battle. Charming an enemy will be possible when certain conditions are met, however the conditions vary from enemy to enemy. Much like how people in real life don't often come out and tell you what they find most persuasive when trying to win them over, most enemies' charm conditions will be hidden from the players. The conditions will vary by area, gender, type, and race (human, dark, animal, etc). The more conditions you meet, the less charm you will need to win them over.

Charming is not affected by die rolls, as it is not a chance based feature, but a skill based one. While players might not be privy to the required conditions for charming someone, the conditions will be rooted in logic, not random generation.

Note that NPCs can be charmed for various purposes as well.

This game has become so complicated for me, so here's one rule specially for me: "wind me up and place me in the correct direction".

I should have probably used another attack since one soldier was to go down with a combined effort, but seeing the damage I'd have received if wide open nothing was really lost. That's my role, after all: allow my mates to finish off an enemy while making sure I stay alive for another round.

Please save me the breakdowns, they're too confusing. Unless they are extremely needed for the game in later stages, I have no reason to know the details. At most, I'd like to keep track of the base damage of my attacks, so I can more or less make rough calculations of how my attack can go through and build up my strategy from there.

It would be nice to have a Discord chat up so we can all discuss what to do. If I post here, Eni uses PM or off-site ways and supernerd is MIA then we can do no good.

I'm okay to proceed to the next round. It could be the last one with the adequate strategy, so hopefully we'll have the chat up by then (or either I shall throw in recommendations for the characters going behind me, but the former seems the more reasonable).

Um, I totally overlooked that we all "go at once." I was waiting for EX Palen and Eniitan! I suppose I've learned my lesson.

I would like to use a basic attack this go round.

EX Palen : I don't intend to be MIA. I just totally overlooked that we all go at once.

Okay, so let's see if we can finish this battle now and face a new challenge. Not sure of what my partners have decided, but I'll go ahead with the winning strategy I've devised and hope I create the opening I intend to give my teammates the chance to finish things off.

I'll be using two basic attacks. The first one goes to Dark Soldier 2, and the other one goes to Dark Soldier 3.

I'll try to reply faster next time. I don't know what I was waiting for, because the week was to get very busy and I almost lost the turn, so I'll pay closer attention to this thread and respond as soon as I can.

Um, I guess my attack goes to Dark Soldier 1? I haven't been myself lately. As the saying goes, "you're not you when you're...not you." But I'm more me now. So I'll be able to better keep up with this, I hope.

supernerd117 :
Ah, I should have been more careful to communicate that one. Sorry about that, man.

Also since Dark Soldier 1 has been defeated, your attack will be directed at the next one in the battle order.

Bob attacks Dark Soldier 2: deals 2,547 damage.
Results breakdown : base damage 1,000, attack stat +1,500, roll +125, enemy's defense -26, defense roll -52.

Let me know if you want to have these attack breakdowns on your turns or not.

Stat changes:
Dark Soldier 2 -2,547 HP (453/3,000)

Eniitan :
Alicia attacks Dark Soldier 2: deals 2,715 damage.
Dark Soldier 2 is defeated!

Alicia attacks Dark Soldier 3: deals 2,857 damage.

Stat changes: Dark Soldier 3 -2857 HP (143/3,000)

EX Palen :
Dark Soldier 2 has been defeated (ordinarily you would have attacked first, but I was about to post the results when I found your post, and went ahead and just added yours to the end, since the battle was won anyway) so both attacks will be directed at Dark Soldier 3.
Akira attacks Dark Soldier 3: deals 1,570 damage.

Dark Soldier 3 is defeated!

The party is victorious!
•All players gain 125 exp.
•All players level up, gaining 1 stat point, and 1 skill point. HP and Ki are replenished.
•Enemies drop 100 gold pieces

Journey Phase
Info: During journey phases you will be presented with options that will greatly affect your game. You will choose how you will spend energy, where you will go, what you will do, and who you will talk to.

Having defeated the three fiends you've encountered, you may now...
Choices:
•Loot their bodies. You may take anything they had equipped visibly, and you might find other items as well.
Cost: 1 energy*.

•Move on.
Cost: 0 energy.

Each player votes on which action(s) to perform, if any.

*Energy: the party has 10 energy. This will only replenish through use of items or by resting in a town.

Movement:
The castle (goal) lies three spaces to the North.
You can only move one apace.

To the North there's a stream.
To the East there are steep, grassy hills.
To the South, a meadow.
To the West, a meadow.

Which way will you go?

Skill Pallette.
The skill pallette works like a skill tree, only with more intertwined paths. An illustration, for better or worse, will be made available shortly (if all goes according to plan... And it never does, right?), but for now visualization will have to suffice. lol

With one skill point, you can unlock any of the following:

Focus lv 1 — Ki abilities become 25% more powerful.

Learning this unlocks:
Focus lv 2.
Scouting lv 1 — increase your chances of seeing enemies before moving, or finding hidden items.
Battle sense lv 1 — deal 10% more damage, and take 10% less.

Ki aptitude lv 1 — use Ki more efficiently (lower cost of Ki abilities by 25%)

Learning this unlocks:
Ki aptitude lv 2.
Healer lv 1 — unlock the ability to learn healing Ki abilities.
Battle sense lv 1 — deal 10% more damage, and take 10% less.

MarioLucarioFan64 : Yeah, you can jump in. If you haven't seen what you need to do to join, just DM me on Discord and I'll let you know how to join in.

Yay for the accidental summon of an old user none of us knew about! xD

I should have known it'd be pretty clear that the battle would be over this turn, knowing the two big hitters our team has. I hope the game won't change that much with a new player joining in, and if anything just make our journey a bit easier by adding more power and more everything to the team.

If HP and Ki are replenished after every victory (for now, at least), then I can take a few more risks if it can help shave off a round in a battle. Wouldn't have been much of a change this time around, but it's a good note to take for future brawls.

I say we should loot the corpses, if anything to test what can we find out. As for movement, my choice goes to North. The steep hills could make a good place for an enemy ambush and the meadows can be a good battle spot, so I say we should head to the stream because it may lead to a town (though the enemy castle is further ahead, so maybe that's the only place it can lead to, but the castle will surely overlook some conquered land we'll have to free).

If it's mandatory to use skill points, then I'll use it for Focus lv1. If not mandatory, then I'll rather not use it yet, depending on how the new recruit fares could affect my choice of focus over ki aptitude.

Finally, just to make sure, will you post our new stats when presenting the next battle? Keeping track by ourselves of all the changes via pen & paper can be quite tiring, so if you could save us the work, that'd be great

EX Palen : lol! I was hoping to edit that out before anyone saw it. xD

HP and Ki don't normally replenish after a battle: that only happened this time because you leveled up. They will regenerate slowly over time, but nowhere near as quickly as they did this time.

As for skill points, you can use them whenever you choose. As you go, costs for skills increase, so there will be times when you may do well to let them accumulate to get a better, more expensive skill. Though obviously you'll have to unlock weaker skills first, but you get the idea.

And yeah, I'll always try to remember to include stats at the start of each battle for reference.

Oh and the map is pretty small for the test, as you can see. If you guys like the end result game then I'll make a few more minor adjustments and launch a full scale version of it afterward.

Alright, that was a lively vote. It was close, but North won by a margin of one.

"Might as well take this." Bob declares happily as he pries the sharp stone blade out of one of the fallen fiend's hands. "You'll not be needing it anymore old boy."

While Akira can't say that he sees the humor in Bob's comment, he also cannot deny the logic: they won this fight with their current crude weaponry, but such accommodations in battle won't get them far. And while the sharpened rocks-turned-weapons that their fallen enemies cling to are far from appropriate weaponry for such a task as they've undertaken, they're better than what the heroes currently find themselves armed with.

Acquiescing, Akira follows suit and raids the stone swords and leather shields of the fallen. They'll need more substantial arms than they have now if they're to succeed.

Meanwhile Alicia, not too keen on the idea of taking part in such morbid activities, hesitates. Surely they could hold out on new equipment until they reach a town, right? Still, she supposes that if she is to be a warrior worthy of delivering the kingdom, then she'll have to face situations such as this many times in the near future, and she might as well get used to it now.

Looted – 3 stone swords, 3 leather shields, one basic health potion (recover 20% health). Weapons and shields have been distributed evenly and automatically equipped, boosting everyone's attack by 1 and defense by 2. Potion was placed in inventory.

Choosing to continue their journey, undeterred by their previous encounter, the heroes happen across a stream.

Their last battle might not have been terribly difficult, but easy or not, when one approaches a battle with due diligence, they work up a bit of a sweat. This stream then seems like a good place to refresh with a quick splash and drink.

As Akira carefully kneels down to splash his face with some cool stream water, he hears a low rumbling sound that he can't quite accredit to Bob's stomach demanding his mid morning snack early. And so, dropping the water that he had scooped up, Akira rises to his feet and turns to see a small group of wolves staring unhappily at them. It seems these beasts don't take too kindly to someone else using their watering hole. It also seems that they've somehow been adversely affected by the presence of the alien beings that have taken over the kingdom.

Supposing that hypothesising and deducing the causes of this predicament is a leisure that he has no time for at current, Akira slowly readies his weapon for battle.

Battle begins.

EX Palen :
You can perform one action per turn against these enemies.

supernerd117 :
You can perform on action per turn. Your turn will come after the enemy's turn.

Eniitan :
You can perform on action per turn. Your turn will come after the enemy's turn.

NOTE: All members still have one unused skill point, one unused stat point, and one unused K stat point. Since I failed to mention the K stat point last time, feel free to use it now if you wish. The rest will have to be saved for after the battle.

Also, the numbers in square brackets indicate how much of your current stat totals are granted by your equipment, not that you are receiving an additional boost to the current numbers. ie. Attack: 5 [+1] indicates that your attack is 5 due to your stat being 4 and your equipment adding 1 to the total, not that your attack is 5 and your weapon boosts it to 6.

Kind of a tough move here. I'm going crazy trying to find out how I can NOT die in this battle

We have an unused stat point and K point, does that mean we can increase one of our stats and K stats by one point? I really need to know this before proceeding with a move, even though I don't have that many choices it could still change the outcome.
