Mega Man made his debut 30 years ago and is one of most popular video game characters of all time. Mega Man is also one of the top icons of the video game era. The very first Mega Man game was Mega Man I. Mega Man has had several different series, video games and even fan made hacks made over the years. Mega Man 1 Showdown is a hack of Mega Man I. How does it compare to the original and other Mega Man games. Well, lets find out

Story: 7

The story was changed a little bit to fit the style of this game. Basically Dr. Wily takes and reprograms the robots he and Dr. Light made. He reprograms the robots to take over the world. He leaves behind Rock (Mega Man) and Roll. Dr. Light converts Rock into a fighting robot to stop Wily. Wily and the robot masters challenge Mega Man to a duel. Mega Man heads out to fight the robot masters in a duel.

Okay, The story was changed a little bit to fit this style of game. Even though the plot was changed a little bit. It is still the same idea as the original game. I have no problem changing the plot to fit this style of game. The plot is very simple.  However, it does feel like something is missing from the original plot though. The makers of the game left out a few details that the original game had. Such as why Wily turned bad, and in the original game Rock volunteered to become Mega Man. So I give it a 7 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The graphics have been altered from the original game. The backgrounds have been changed to fit the fighting style of this game. Also there are no stages in this game. It is just a boss room. What the makers did was take a theme from the original game and made it into the background of the room. Believe or not that was nicely done. The sprites are the same as the original game. In addition, the game uses the same colors as the original game.

The controls are actually a little bit better in this game than the original game. I wonder though if that is due to the lack of stages. Mega Man I had some so-so controls. A lot of the controls where glitchy in the first game. This game those issues have been fixed. On the other hand, the controls still had some of their problems. The main problem with the controls is Mega Man appears to be sluggish in this game. It seems like Mega Man moves slower than he is supposed too. I also found myself having to double tap the button to get Mega Man to do what I wanted. I give the graphics and controls an 8 out of 10. I liked how they altered the backgrounds, kept the same sprites and same colors. I also liked how the glitches in the controls where corrected. I do not like though that the controls are still sluggish.

Sound: 7

The sound in this game was left unchanged. This game uses the same sound as the original game. Mega Man I had okay sound its tunes where for the most part good. It just got overshadowed by future Mega Man games that are infamous for their sound quality. Still Mega Man I had decent sound. The music is good and was left unchanged. The sounds of the game were also left unchanged.  The main problem I had with Mega Man I sound was two of the tracks had tingles in them. I hate tingles in music. I was hoping that this being a hack that would have been corrected but oh well.  Still for the most part the sound was decent. I give it a 7 out of 10. Elec Man, Fire Man and Ice Man's themes are my favorite. I just hate the tingles in some of the other stages that is what brings the rating down.

Replay Value 6

I kind of like the idea of this being a fighting game. To me it offers something new and different. It makes one think they are playing a different game instead of a hack of Mega Man I. I liked the idea as it showed creativity. I had fun playing this game. However, it does feel like something is missing. I understand cutting the stages out, but the stages is what makes a Mega Man game good. Maybe they could have gave a little bit of a stage. Moreover, this game still has some of the same problems the original game had. The issues with the controls, the sound and lack of depth bring the replay value down some. So while this is a fun game it is one I will not replay as much as some of the other games or hacks. They are just so much better than this game and does not have the problems this game has. Therefore, I give it a 6 out of 10.

Depth: 1

The area Mega Man Showdown suffers is the lack of depth. Mega Man games are infamous for their high amount of depth to them. A lot of Mega Man games have long stages, secret paths, branching paths, items to find and secrets. The original game did not have a lot of that but the stages where long and they were a few secret items to find. This game there are no stages no branching paths, no secret items to find. Basically you start each stage outside of the boss gate and that is it.  To be honest I really hate that. Maybe I am old school when it comes to Mega Man. But in Mega Man games I like to see depth. I understand they where trying to make this a fighting game. Still they could have done a mini stage or something. Therefore, I give the depth a 1 out of 10 there is just no depth here.

Difficulty: 8

This game is difficult and probably a game you would not want to introduce someone to the franchise to. For starters you only have a short health bar. That means if you get hit twice your a goner. The game gives you little room for error. Also special weapons do not have a lot of ammo to them and they have been toned down. Basically they do not do the same amount of damage as they did in the original game. To make matters worse is the bosses have twice the health bar that Mega Man has in this game. Speaking of bosses their attacks are brutal. The boss attacks have been changed from the original game. Robot Masters are now quicker than the original game. Also their attacks have been upgraded. Some Robot Masters have gotten new attacks. Furthermore the sluggishness of the controls can get you hit in this game.

The reason I did not give the difficulty a 10 out of 10 is for a few reasons. While this game is brutal once I learned some of the Robot Masters patterns I was able to win some. You really have to pay attention to their patterns. You also have to learn how to dodge their attacks in a quick matter.  Also when I factor in difficulty I also factor in how difficult the stages where. Since they are no stages in this game. I feel like I cannot give it a 10 out of 10 like other Mega Man games. So yeah 8 out of 10 sounds right.

Overall: 7.9

Overall this was not a horrible game. In fact I had fun playing it, it just does not have the same charm as other games or even hacks have. Still this game does have some things going for it. While at the same time there were some negatives in this game. Before I start into the negatives I will start with the positives.

I like the idea of making this feel like a fighting game. It reminded me some of Power Battle. I also like how the backgrounds have been altered in the robot masters fight room. In addition the controls are no longer glitchy. In my Mega Man 1 review I talked about how the glitches plagued the very first Mega Man game. I also like how the robot masters attack patterns have been altered. These score high points in my opinion because it makes it feel like this game is offering something new. It feels like also that it is a different game from the original even though it is just a hack. To me that shows creativity. As I stated I believe the maker or makers where trying to add something new.

Now for the negatives. Why oh Why did they not fix the tingles in some of the stage themes. I have played other hacks were the sound was fixed. It makes me wonder if whoever made this was using older software and they could not fix it. Second, while the glitches in the controls have been fixed. The controls still had their issues. The main problem as I mentioned earlier is the sluggishness. I had to double tap the button to get Mega Man to do what I wanted. It also felt sluggish trying control Mega Man during fights. This can get you hit or killed. It can also be frustrating at times.  I also hate it that we did not get stages in this game. I like the idea of a fighting theme game. But they could have at least gave us mini stages. Mega Man games are known for their stages it was a shame to see the stages cut out. The lack of stages makes this game have no depth to it.

Overall I give the game a 7.9 rating. What I found to be negatives might not be negative to some players. I did have fun playing this game and it does have some things going for it. It just does not have a good charm like other hacks have. If you like fighting style games than you will enjoy this game. Would I recommend this game? Well, the answer is yes and no. If you like fighting games, have played fighting games and are good at Mega Man games then yes play this game I recommend it. However, if you are new to Mega Man games, fighting games, or get frustrated easily than this game is not for you. There is a good chance you will die in this game and lose a few fights until you get the hang of it. If your new to this type of game. I recommend playing Mega Man Power Battle. That game will get you used to this style of game. Anyway, 7.9 sounds about right.

Enjoy Blessings in Christ and happy gaming.
