Mario Kart 64

Mario + Kart = Great Game
Mario Kart 64, Let's do this.

I have always loved the Mario series, whether it be the damsel in distress story line, or the fast paced run-n-jump mechanics. This although, is no ordinary Mario game. Mario Kart combines a racing game, with the Mario universe. Mario Kart introduces an item system in which you can throw hysterical items at your opponents to keep them off your tail. The higher place you are in the race, the less invigorating items you will receive. But if you fall behind, you can acquire a super powerful item that helps you take back your rightful place in 1st!

The graphics on this game are phenomenal. Along side with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, this is one of the few N64 games with a take on 3 dimensional worlds. The kart sounds and visuals feel realistic, to the point of tires screeching on hot asphalt and black smoke rising from beneath your wheels. The stages are pulled straight from other Mario games, with their own twist, along with enemies that serve as obstacles. I praise this game for the extreme fun that comes out of these tracks. Rainbow Road, Bowser's Castle, all give an ambient feel that makes the player feel excitement and a rush of adrenaline when trying to pass 1st place.

I could LITERALLY play this game all day, and sometimes I do. Out of all the Mario Kart games, this one is my 3rd favorite, right there next to Mario Kart 7 for 3DS and Mario Kart Wii. This may be an older and outdated game, but it holds up next to other great titles. I highly suggest firing up the ol' emulator and giving this game a run. The future Mario Kart games are improvements upon this one, (better graphics, more powerful tracks, more character options) but this game is fun nonetheless.

While this game doesn't have much story (as it is a racing game), the depth is amazing. While that may not make a ton of sense, allow me to explain. The story is practically non-existent, but the stages and tracks are immersive and a... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario Bros 3

A Super Tre-quel
So I have been way to harsh on this game since i first played it 2 years ago. I could never beat it then, so I considered it a bad game. Getting into it though, this game is great. Just really... really... hard.

Super Mario 3 is yet another game with the same mechanics as the first. The thing that makes this game different though, is the wooden and staged look to the levels, and the new areas.

So starting off, graphics are about a 7. They aren't bad at all for their time. This is an NES game mind you, still the first console Nintendo ever released. They made some major improvements over the years. Same as it may be, this game features a map mechanic where you can choose your next location (kinda). You have your basic paths, but by doing secret things on levels such as discover hidden pipes, you can access optional skips or worlds on the map. This also includes events in which you are forced to fight an enemy traversing the map for you to progress. It gets a little irritating at times, especially when you can't beat them to save your life. I'm referring to you, hammer bros.

This game introduces the Tanooki suit. A powerup that turns Mario into a raccoon with heightened flying abilities. Ships, new stages that move up and down, with cannons firing at your feet. The difficulty spikes at the stages because you have to make it through the stage in one piece and kill a boss at the end of almost every world. It gets irritating as well, due to the repetitive nature of the ships along with increasing difficulty. The ability to store items is the only thing that saves it for me. Otherwise, the ships are nearly impossible going in blind. They only get longer each world.

Off of the complaining aspect, the normal game stages are pretty creative and enjoyable. This game is practically what Super Mario 3D Land was based off of. I wouldn't recommend this game to an average gamer looking for a fun time, as you will tear your hair out a... Read the rest of this Review
Super Smash Bros.

It's "Smasher" Time!
Super Smash Brothers. If you haven't heard this title before, you've been missing out. This is my totally biased review on (in my opinion) one of the greatest games to ever hit a home console. Back in the days of the N64, Nintendo was booming with games. The Legend of Zelda, Mario, but nobody ever expected this Street Fighter meets Mortal Combat game, featuring all the iconic Nintendo characters.

Super Smash Bros. is a fast paced 2D fighting game with decent Mario 64 style graphics (Rough yet clean), and catchy soundtracks. I preferably choose Samus, as she is my favorite, yet there are many options. Each character comes packed with their own unique and special abilities. Your play style depends on the character you choose. Some are highly defensive and take a beating, while others are mostly offensive. Some are quick and some are slow. The object of the game is to deal damage to your opponents. The more damage a character takes, the higher their 'damage counter' rises. Once their counter hits above 100%, that character can then be launched off the stage, the launcher receiving a point. The more launches a person gets, the fewer they take, decides the winner of each match.

While this game lacks story, it also isn't the type of game to carry a story. Being a fighting game, the replay value is in the rematches. Trying out all the characters and finding your match.

There are 4 Smash games in all, and although the first isn't my favorite, it is sure up there with my favorite Nintendo games of all time. I give this game a 9.7 for its full replay value. The only reason I wouldn't return to this game is if I was delving into its improved sequels. This game is classic, and any Nintendo fan should definitely pick up the controller and give this game a try. I'm sure you'll find something likable within it.
Metroid II - Return of Samus

A Good Sequel
Metroid II: The Return of Samus is the sequel to the first Metroid game, simply titled, "Metroid".
While this game may not be the cream of the crop in the Metroid franchise, it surely added on to the first game. In this sequel, Samus can (along with her old abilities) aim downward, as well as up, left, and right.

The graphics on this game are nowhere near the most beautiful, and indeed may cause confusion when traversing the map since all the areas are the same looking. Otherwise, the game is very addictive and enjoyable. The graphics are in black and white because this is the first Metroid game released on gameboy, yet there are rom hacks that allow the game to be played in color (found elsewhere on the site, for example Metroid 2, Metroid II DX, etc.).

The sounds are decent for a game of its time. while some of the soundtracks and noises are piercingly high frequency, they only add to the atmosphere. The beginning of the game opens up with a pretty melodic theme song. I honestly don't understand why it wasn't praised along with the other Metroid soundtracks.

The game is very addictive in terms of not wanting to put the thing down. As you run through the caverns of a metroid infested planet, committing mass genocide on an alien race has never been so much fun. On the down side, after a few hours of gameplay, you might get lost. This causes a ton of stress in finding your way around. Otherwise, this game has a lot of fun to be had.

The story begins directly after the events of the first game chronologically, while it actually follows the prime games in the cannon story line. Samus is sent to planet SR388, home of the metroid species, to eradicate them permanently. As it turns out, the metroids have now evolved. Your mission is to destroy the constantly evolving metroids as they grow bigger and more powerful. This game is actually the first metroid game to end with a setup to the next game, along with a fully developed st... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 is the perfect portrayal of Mario in 3D. This game has all the feeling and elements that a Mario game should have. The story is a great remix of the generic "Bowser captures Princess Peach". The game takes place within paintings. You jump into a painting and you can explore the world within them. Earn stars by completing specific missions in each painted world and unlock new rooms and paintings. There are many secrets to be had in this epic installment. The Nintendo DS released a higher quality version of this already amazing game, adding depth to the playability. Furthermore, speed runners will love this game do to its time based star collecting system. Super Mario 64  is a game for all ages, offering many things that almost all gamers will find fun.
