Namco Museum Vol. 3

Namco Museum Vol. 3
Namco Museum Vol. 3

The third edition of the Namco Museum series features 6 arcade games and like previous volumes includes a museum mode in addition to the arcade games.

The first game and main title on the volume is Ms. Pac-Man. It is the sequel to Pac-Man and features a girl Pac-Man along with different maze varieties. The rules are the same as Pac-Man; eat all the dots in the maze while avoiding the ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky , and Sue. The fruit in the game also bounces around the maze instead of it being in the middle. Mrs. Pac-Man was also featured in other Namco games such as Mrs. Pac-Man Maze Madness.

The second game is Galaxian.  This was actually the prequel to Galaga which was included in Namco Museum Vol. 1.  The rules are similar to Galaga but, the alien ship does not pick you up in the tractor beam so there is no way to earn a dual ship. The Galaxians come flying down at you but, they drift around the space unlike Galaga where they come at you.  Also, it is harder to earn points because your aliens in Galaxian aren’t worth as many points plus they are smaller and thus harder to shoot.

The third game, Dig Dug, is a shooting game but it does not take place in space. You dig down underground to battle the monsters.  There are two types of monsters: Pookas and Frygars. The Pookas are round like Pac-Man but wear yellow goggles.  The Frygars breathe fire, look like little green dragons, and are not as easy to shoot as the Pookas.  As the levels increase, so do the number of monsters.

The fourth game, Pole Position 2, is a racing game with more courses than the original but with the same basic controls.

Phozon, the fifth game, is a somewhat lesser known title that puts you in control of an atom looking device to collect colorful atoms and get points.

The last game, The Tower of Druaga, is a little more known than Phozon but still not as popular a... Read the rest of this Review

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Crash Bandicoot 2:  Cortex Strikes Back Review

Overall: 9
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back on PlayStation 1.  Crash Bandicoot is one of Sony’s most popular series along with Spyro the Dragon.  This game was an improvement in all areas over the first Crash game.  The warp room concept introduced in this game allows for easier game saves and better navigation between levels/worlds.

Graphics: 9
The graphics are better than the first Crash Bandicoot game.  The characters are sharper and look much better.  In fact, some critics noted that the graphics for this game were the best of any PlayStation game at the time it was released.

Sound: 8
The music and effects for Crash 2 are superb. Background comments by Doctor Neo Cortex intertwined throughout the game add a comical flair to the game experience and I think enhance the storyline.

Addictiveness: 8
I am a huge fan of this whole series and enjoy going back and replaying the older games like this one in addition to the newer ones.  After you have played several of these games all the way through, it is fun to go back and start a new game to refresh your memory on the different levels since they are all different.

Story: 8
In this sequel to Sony’s first Crash game, Cortex discovers crystals in a cave where he landed at the end of Game 1.  Crash’s sister Coco Bandicoot asks Crash to get her a new battery for her laptop but before he can complete the task, he is intercepted by Cortex.  Cortex has one master crystal but needs the remaining crystals in order to accomplish his evil plans.  He convinces Crash to help him find the remaining crystals that are spaced throughout the game.  Crash finds a teleporter to a warp room where you learn that there are 5 different worlds to explore with 5 levels each along with a boss battle in-between each world.

Pac-Man World

Pac-Man World
Pac-Man World        Pac-Man took on a whole new dimension in Pac-Man World 1 for PlayStation. The game was released for Pac-man’s 20th Anniversary, as you see in the title screen, and the original arcade game is included. Pac-Man’s family and friends have been kidnapped by Toc-Man, an evil robot version of Pac-Man created by a ghost named Orson.  Pac-Man must journey to Ghost Island to stop him. To get to Toc-Man however Pac-man must travel through 6 worlds to get there: Pirate, Ruins, Space, Fun House, Factory, and Graveyard. Each world brings Pac-Man face to face with a different boss at the end of the last stage in that world. In addition to eating dots, chomping ghosts with power pellets, and getting fruit, Pac-Man can also Rev-Roll, which is similar to Sonic’s speed; and Butt Bounce, which is similar to Mario’s ground pound.  As you go through the levels you try to collect fruit along the way:  Apples, Strawberries, Oranges, Bells, Peaches, and more.  Each level has a Galaxian which is a maze like classic Pac-Man. While looking for fruits you will come across letters that spell Pac-Man…. P A C M A N. If you spell Pac-Man you’ll unlock a surprise. You have 3 lives default in the arcade game with no settings to change it. Lives are also important in the main game as you have life pieces to collect throughout the game. Pac-Man has an additional power-up besides power pellets:  a steel suit, similar to Mario’s metal suit from Super Mario 64. It allows him to walk underwater, where he normally swims, and butt bounce underwater too. This game is a more modern and updated Pac-Man introducing the gaming franchise to new generations of players while providing glimpses of the original game to older generations familiar with the original arcade games. The Pac-Man World family of games includes this game as well as Pac-Man World 2 and... Namco Museum Vol. 1

Namco Museum Vol.1
Namco Museum Vol.1

The first in the series of Namco Museum games for PlayStation features 7 Namco games and a virtual Namco Museum with promo displays for each game.

The first game in this volume is the original Pac-Man, a simple easy dot munching Namco classic. The instructions are simple; Pac-Man must eat all the dots in the maze while dodging Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, the ghost monsters. If Pac-man touches a ghost he dies but, while Pac-man does get killed if he touches a ghost he can also gobble up a power pellet that allows him to munch the ghosts.

The second game in this collection is Rally-X. The instructions are simple like Pac-man. You drive a car through a maze while collecting flags and dodging other cars that make you crash. You do have a power though, a smoke cloud to slow the other cars down. Get all the flags in a stage to move to the next. Next, Rally-X’s sequel, New Rally-X. The play is the same as the original game; get all the flags while avoiding the other cars.

The third game in this retro set is Namco’s Galaga. This game is fairly easy but hard at times; you’re put in control of a spaceship to shoot the pesky galagas.  After they all fly in, they start flying down trying to bomb your ship. You can get a dual ship by letting the green alien catch your ship and by shooting it as he comes down. Beware; getting a dual ship takes a life. When you defeat two stages you get to a challenging stage where the galagas fly around in 4 different patterns of 10 each.  If you shoot all 40 you get a 10,000 point bonus.  The next challenging stage is in three levels and so on.

The fourth title in this set is Pole Position, a simple racing title. Race and try to get back to the finish line before time runs out.

The next game is Bosconian, a shooter similar to asteroids.  Your ship has to shoot green enemy ships to advance to the next level.

CrashBandicoot 3: Warped
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped   Review Overall: 9.5 Crash Bandicoot 3:  Warped for PlayStation 1. This is the next installment in the adventures of Crash Bandicoot. The Crash series is one of my favorites and this one is one of my most favorite games in the series. With new abilities, levels, and features, this Crash does not disappoint fans of the series or newcomers either. Since this is one of my favorites, I rate it a 9.5 overall because of the positive features as compared to other Crash games and other PlayStation 1 games.  Graphics: 8 This game has some new graphics due to the enhanced storyline. The quality improves over Crash 2 and is totally revamped versus the original Crash. New enemies create a positive change in the overall playing environment.  Sound: 9 If you are not careful, you will find yourself humming the catchy main theme song to this episode! The new animations and graphics offer new sounds and effects which enhance not only the sound, but overall quality of the game.  Addictiveness: 8 More fun and better than Crash 2, this game can become addictive. In order to collect all of the items in all the levels, you will have to play the levels multiple times. For example, the relics are collected by beating a preset time limit which is achieved from practicing the level to lower your time limit. As you play each level over and over and save your progress, you will want to come back and achieve the same items for each level. I personally go through and get all of my crystals, then work on gems, and then relics which are the hardest to collect. Sometimes I change up and work on relics before the gems if it is a level I have perfected and can get through quickly in order to beat the time limit.  Story: 8   At the end of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Cortex’s Space Station explodes and at the b...
