Donkey Kong 64

"Donkey Kong Is Here"-Donkey Kong 64 Review
Donkey Kong 64 is a 3D collect-a-thon platforming game made by the company Rareware. A collect-a-thon game is the type of game in which there are many different objects you have to collect in the course of your adventure. Is it a game that can deliver on what was intended? Well more on that in the review.

Anyway, Donkey Kong was a game that I played in my childhood. I found the Rareware logo on it appealing since I was a Banjo-Kazooie fan and I wanted to play more games of that nature. Did I like it as a child, well yes since it was everything I wanted, another game similar to Banjo. Revisiting it years later does it hold up? And can others enjoy it as well? Well that will be answered in the review as it explores one of Rare’s last masterpieces on a Nintendo console.

The graphics are amazing for an N64 game. Sure the graphics of games on the system don’t look bad, however by today’s standards you can tell that they have aged. Donkey Kong 64 however doesn’t have the same feeling. The graphics are more cartoonish, which to me can hold up better as time goes on than games with more realistic looking graphics. So what makes these graphics so great? Well for a variety of reasons. The models of each characters are smooth, the environments are bright and colorful, and fitting of what the game is trying to convey. They put a lot of detail into each object.

Another aspect of the graphics that I like to touch on are the animations. They are well done and fun to look at. The idle animations especially, if you don’t do anything the character you are playing as do random things. Lanky for instance juggles a bunch of oranges.

So overall the graphics are pleasant to look at, are smooth and highly detailed. Quite possible the best looking N64 game I have seen.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

A Cute And Charming 2D Platfomer
Shantae was once an obscure game found on the Gameboy, it’s a series that I myself haven’t heard of until quite recently. It’s hard to imagine how this one obscure game and character has now become as popular as it currently is. And oh boy is the series popular, during the Smash Ballot Shantae was one of the characters that people wanted the most in the game. Seeing the reception this character has received from fans, I decided to play a game in which she is featured in. That game is the current one I am reviewing, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. I wasn’t sure what to expect when starting up the game as it is a 2D platformer, a genre which I am generally not too fond of, however the game managed to charm its way into my heart. The review below will go into more detail about just my feelings on the game as well as what I experienced the first time I’ve played through it. Also this review can pretty much apply to all versions of the game as they are essentially the same.

Graphics 10/10
The graphics are simply put amazing. The game is a sprite-based 2D platformer. However even though the game is made with sprites the graphics are very detailed, well as detailed as one can get with a game that is made with sprites, as you can see with the cracks on buildings.

Another reason why this section is so high is due to the portraits. When a character speaks, a nicely drawn portrait of the character appears showing there’s more to the graphics then the sprites. These portraits also show expression every once and a while changing to show what the character speaking is feeling.

Sound 10/10
From the title screen you’re greeted with an epic tune that gives you the idea of just what you’re in for in terms of the music. For the most part, the music is upbeat fitting with the more happy tone of the game and the character herself. The music sounds like it is heavily influenced by Arabian music, which fits in with... Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright

"In The White Light" Fire Emblem Fates Birthright Review
Fire Emblem, the once obscure tactical series, is a now mainstream Japanese RPG game. Fire Emblem Fates is the newest installment of the series. It consists of three different games, Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation. This review will cover Birthright, the game that is recommended to start off with, since it is the easier of the three and is designed for beginners in mind.

Graphics-10/10
The graphics are simply put, beautiful. Most cutscenes in the game play off as visual novel type of game with text that you read with a character portrait. The background either consists of beautifully drawn images that fit the scenery or of the sprites of the characters currently talking. The character portraits are beautifully drawn and change depending on the characters emotions. The CG videos that play are wonderful to watch, with nice character models and detailed scenery. There aren’t many aspects of the graphics that can be complained about in this game.

Sound-8/10
The soundtrack for this game is pleasing to listen to. Birthright has a very Japanese sounding soundtrack, which is a given due to the fact that Birthright follows the Hoshido path which is based on Japan. Each track is wonderful to listen to and no track can be considered bad by any means. What’s nice is that while you’re on a map the music changes when you enter a battle. What was once a pleasant and calming tune is now one that sounds more intense and filled with action. Once the battle is over it transitions back to the normal map tune.

Even though the sound is memorable and pleasing to listen to, this section doesn’t get a perfect ten. What brings down the score is the voice acting. It can be a hit or a miss to most that play the game. However for the most part the voice acting is nice. However there are some characters that fall short such as Effie. Even characters with for the most part nice voice acting, like Felicia, have that one line tha... Read the rest of this Review
Undertale

"Stay Determined" Undertale Review
Undertale, one of the biggest games to have come out within the past year. It is created by Toby Fox and was funded through the site Kickstarter. Since it’s released it has won the hearts of many players and has become one of the most popular games online. The question is, does the game deserve the hype and praise that it gets? This review will explore just what makes this game so beloved by the majority.

Graphics-7/10
Undertale was heavily inspired by games of the NES era, specifically Earthbound, and that is apparent in the graphical style of the game, which is 8-bit. The graphics can be described as simple. For the most part they don’t stray from their simplicity, there are exceptions which won't be mentioned due to spoilers. The graphics unfortunately are weak because of the simplicity, compared to other games of the style, like say Shovel Knight for instance, it somewhat falls short. The graphics are decent to look at however, there aren’t any graphical errors and you can clearly see each character and the scenery. They're also pleasing to look at and not filled with blinding colors

Sounds 10/10
The music of the game is phenomenal. The music does a good job of raising the atmosphere of each place or situation. The first boss battle the song “Heartache” plays which both serves to pump up the player for the fight as well as to make the player feel emotional considering just who they are fighting. Snowdin Town has a sweet song that serves to calm the player and fits the charm and Christmas feel of the town.

One aspect that is quite nice is depending on the route you choose, the overworld music changes. Pacifist/Neutral have the normal soundtrack, however the music played in Genocide route plays different music. The music played is the normal music slowed down and in a place with happier music, such as Snowdin Town, it is very disconcerting to listen to. It really gives a haunting feeling since the...
