X-Men 2 - Clone Wars 02-12-14 07:35 PM |
THE X-Men game of the 90s. If I had to pick just one X-Men game to be stuck with for all eternity, this would have to be it. Containing three of my favorite characters, offering plenty of variety and delivering on atmosphere and a generally good experience, there is little more I could ask for. But that bit of gushing aside, let us get down to business. Graphics: 9 Everything here is very distinct, and loyal to the subject matter in most every respect. This is very much in tune graphically with what you could expect from the comics at the time; little details are in full display, and everything is clear and concise. Dark, perhaps, but it works in context and aids the mood. Everyone looks as they're supposed to, and no area is lacking for personality. Sound: 9 Atmospheric, a bit subdued, but mostly, we are once again giving credit to mood. If you don't care for a dark experience, this game will leave you a bit cold. Some things are slightly reminiscent of the cartoon playing at this time, though nothing directly from there; it is largely comprised of pieces you would associate with the precise moment the game thrusts you into. Sound effects are solid, and give a certain amount of weight to your actions. Explosions are perhaps a bit too "poppy" at times, but this is a small (albeit frequent) blemish on an otherwise great setup. Addictiveness: 9 There is a lot of reason to keep playing. You have six (or seven) characters to play with, relatively long stages to experiment with and search through, and it's only a little routine. There is some repetition, as with most any game of this era, but X-Men 2 goes a long way toward delivering new sights and a sense of accomplishment, for your buck (or Viz, as the case may be). Story: 10 I am fudging this number a bit, but allow me to explain why. The story in-game is largely delivered through cryptic logs in real-time, as far as the world is concerned, It delivers on a certain atmospheric quality that com... Read the rest of this Review |
Hook 02-09-14 02:44 PM |
A decent experience. As a child, I loved to play this game, though looking back, the flaws are more apparent. Nonetheless, it remains a solid game. Easily one of the better licensed games of the era, but far from great. Graphics: 8 The graphical quality holds up well, and the environments rich, with outstanding color. Variety is in no short supply here, for either enemy or stage design. Things are similar to the movie, and you'll be able to identify iconic locales at a glance. Characters too are well-presented, perhaps needing a few more frames of animation, but those present are unambiguous and lively. I will say, Peter probably should have appeared in green, as most people know him, though that may have blended into some backgrounds too much. Sound: 9 Easily the best part of the game. Though the voice acting is very stock, and the writing forced, this is the only low point. Sound effects are never obnoxious and decently balanced, though perhaps a little subdued. I suspect this was a conscious choice, to make way for the gem of the whole experience: the music. Hook uses the original John Williams score from the movie it was based on, and to glorious effect. This one factor was enough to keep me coming back again and again. This one factor makes up the majority of my score; perhaps a little biased, but there are people out there for whom music makes the experience. Addictiveness: 6 Things fall apart a little at this point. It's by no means an unpleasant play through, but you might have a problem staying motivated. Hook is slow, but deliberate, not entirely unlike a Castlevania title, albeit nowhere near as well-crafted. Perhaps a bit too slow, however, as getting from one side of the screen to the other can take a bit too long. Story: 4 Hook is a very divisive movie, though it's one I thoroughly enjoy. That said, story here is painfully straightforward, in context of playing the game, and any possible depth can only come from the movie... Read the rest of this Review |
