Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
07-01-15 09:24 AM
Better, Faster......Stronger.
Back in 2012, Dennaton's Hotline Miami made a surprise splash on the gaming stage. It was energetic. It was brutally difficult, but fun. It had an epic soundtrack. It was a hit with critics. Never was it meant to be a bestseller, but Dennaton proved that a triple-a budget wasn't necessary to produce a spectacular game. A sequel for such a title was a must. But not just any copy-paste formulaic trash- there had to be more this time around. More levels, more characters, an even better soundtrack, the whole deal. Three years after the first installment, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number was released to a crowd anxious to see if all Dennaton's promises held up. And did they ever....

A Rough Town Gets Rougher:

The year is 1991. It's been two years since Jacket's homicidal rampage through the city of Miami, and the town is as cold as ever. Murders are rampant, and there is a battle between killers for fame and control of the streets. You control a colourful cast as they strive for notoriety: The Fans are sociopaths who hail Jacket as a hero and pay tribute with blood. Plenty of it. There's Manny Pardo, a bent cop who almost flaunts his violent nature. Even a pacifist by name of Evan Wright, who is desperate to complete his book on Jacket's "career", often putting his life on the line for info.

And that's just the story set in 1991! In 1985 you play as Beard, a character returning from Hotline Miami....as a comrade fighting with Jacket against the Soviets in Hawaii. In 1989, the characters of Richter and Jake are introduced as normal people drafted by the mysterious ultranationalist organisation 50 Blessings to kill Russian mob members, revealing that Jacket's rampages had roots deeper than anyone could have known.

The architecture of the story is incredible. It's told in a Pulp Fiction-esque non-linear style, with consecutive levels (26 in total, divided into 6 chapters excluding the prologue and epilogue) often being set in different date... Read the rest of this Review
Max Payne 3

A final shot at redemption.......
In 2001, Rockstar launched the Max Payne series as something of a side-project from their main "product", Grand Theft Auto. The first installment was critically acclaimed, with its innovative mechanics and grittiness. A sequel was released in 2003 to equally warm reviews but commercial failure. Perhaps the latter is why the long-awaited wrap-up to the series, Max Payne 3, took so long to be released. After its release was postponed many times over a span of nine years and many changes announced each time, the final installment in the Max Payne trilogy was at least released in May-June 2012. Critical reception was largely positive, but fans were much more divisive. Some loved the new path the game took, while others utterly despised it for that reason, disowning it all together. Let's take a closer look.

An escape, or yet another re-run of past experiences?

It has been nine years since former NYPD cop Max Payne killed all of his enemies and avenged those who slayed his loved ones. Despite that, all he has to live for is brooding over past crimes in a bar and an apartment in the slums. During one night of drinking, Max is approached by Raul Passos, who he attended the police academy with. Passos offers Max a job as a bodyguard for a rich family, the Branco's in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Payne is hesitant at first, but accepts after he kills the son of a local mob boss and is faced with its entire army. During a party hosted by the Branco's several of those attending, including real-estate mogul Rodrigo and his wife Fabiana, are kidnapped by the Commando Sombra gang but are rescued by Max. However, the CS strikes several days later when they successfully kidnap Fabiana from a nightclub. A simple game of paying ransom for her return takes a turn when a local paramilitary group ambushes the meeting between Max and the CS, stealing the ransom. Payne's quest to rescue Fabiana soon becomes entangled between webs of deception and corruption as he soon ... Read the rest of this Review

A cop fallen from grace......nothing to lose.
Back in 2001, Rockstar Games had their first big success with Grand Theft Auto III. This installment added 3D graphics, a larger map, and more missions. The game made millions, and put Rockstar at the peak of attention in a time when heavy violence in video games was extremely controversial. Of course, the company couldn't rely solely on satirical third-person shooters for income - they had to branch out. And branch out they did. Max Payne was released in the same year as GTA III, but the two share little similarity besides both being shooters. Max Payne is much darker and grittier than the latter and, to boot, is much deeper. Let's dive right into the first "serious" game ever made by Rockstar!

A broken man alone on a snow covered concrete jungle......Max Payne is at his worst.

In 1998, NYPD officer Max Payne returns home to find that his baby daughter and wife, Rose, have been killed by junkies high on a new kind of drug. Following the deaths, Payne transforms into a sarcastic, bleak, poetically-minded shell of his past self and transfers to the DEA intent on stopping the flow of the drug, dubbed Valkyr. During a mission in the New York Subway three years later, Payne stumbles across a bank robbery being carried out by mobsters of the Punchinello crime family. Max kills the mobsters, who were stealing bonds of an enormously successful new company, and goes to meet with his colleague and close friend, Alex. Alex is killed by an unknown figure, and Payne is framed for the crime. Now without allies or friends, Max roams the blizzard-sieged streets of New York in a quest to knock down the Punchinellos, stop Valkyr, and evade his former comrades. Along the way, he begins to unravel an ever-increasing hidden web of secrets regarding the death of his loved ones and those who were involved.

There is a level of density and grittiness to this story that remains unrivalled even by most games today. The title never fears to go to f... Read the rest of this Review
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry's back to an even more deadly Hogwarts!
This here is a movie-game. Now before you go running off in horror, let me fill you in on this title. It's the third installment in a game series based off of the smash hit series of films, which in turn were based off even more popular novels by J.K. Rowling. Like the films and books, the games revolved around Harry Potters' adventures in attempting to stop the evil dark lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, all while dealing with the rest of his life, like his studies at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Like many movie-games, the Harry Potter games are mostly garbage, especially the new ones. This has led to the earlier installments largely being forgotten. While not so much a pity for the first two titles, the third game is more of a loss, since it has many decent qualities that made it pretty decent for a game of its time. Let's stroll right in!

There's a killer on the loose, and deadly measures run rampant.

Harry Potter is heading back to Hogwarts for his third year. He meets up with his friends Ron and Hermione and they hop on the train together. En route, the train is stopped and Potter is attacked by a dark being known as a Dementor. Dementors are normally only found at the top-secret wizard prison of Azkaban, but have been ordered by the Ministry of Magic to scour the land for an escapee, Sirius Black, who was imprisoned for several horrific crimes. Harry is saved only by the intervention of the peculiar new professor, Remus Lupin. Harry then develops a crippling fear of Dementors. Progressing through the school year, Harry is taught by Lupin a spell that can defeat Dementors (as well as training on how to combat them) after the former is attacked during a Quidditch match. Potter also learns that Black was the one who betrayed his family to Voldemort, and sets out to kill him. Along the way, Harry discovers the truth about many aspects of his life, including Lupins' true nature, and whether or not Black really com... Read the rest of this Review

Harry returns to the most dangerous school in the world!
A general rule Hollywood has is that if a book is popular enough, it warrants a film. Nowhere is that more clear than with the Harry Potter franchise. One of the most popular and successful novel series of all time generated an even more successful and popular film series. However, it was clear that there needed to be more HP merchandise and paraphernalia. That meant toys, theme parks, and of course, video games. Like many movie-based games, the Harry Potter video games were never meant to be award-winners. However, a couple of games proved pretty decent and actually kind of GOOD. This is one of those games. Let's look closer.

There's ANOTHER evil being roaming Hogwarts? Sheesh!

After an eventful first year at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry the young boy Harry Potter, who survived an attack as an infant by the dark lord Voldemort that killed his parents, has returned home for the summer. He lives with his dreadful Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and the spoiled Dudley. These relatives are non-magical folk, so called muggles, and do not approve of Harry attending Hogwarts. One night, Harry is visited by an elf named Dobby, who warns him of an evil force lurking at Hogwarts and orders him not to return. Harry disobeys and escapes his abusive caretakers with the help of his friend Ron, Ron's brothers Fred and George, and a flying Ford Anglia. After missing the train to Hogwarts, Ron and Harry travel there with the Anglia and crash upon arrival, still late, and meet up with their friend Hermione.

Barely escaping expulsion, Harry goes through the school year without any real worries, aiding his house Gryffindor and playing Quidditch like a champ along the way. There are some new faces at Hogwarts, like the pompous new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockheart, as well as usual characters like the distrusting and snide Professor Snape, the wise headmaster...
