Super Mario World - The Lost Adventure - Episode 1

Mario's Lost Adventure, for better or worse
I was a huge fan of Super Mario World when I was younger. Even today it's one of my most nostalgic games to come back to. In fact, one of the surprises when I played this game was some of its differences. The Cape is only seen in one level and meant to be lost so you can't abuse it through the rest of the game. The Fire Flower is gone and replaced by a Bullet Bill power. Another difference is the length. When I saw that this hack was an entire series, I assumed each game would be a miniature adventure that would take a short while at most. I was definitely wrong, the first game already taking me a few hours to reach the end of. The first question you might ask is if I enjoyed my playthrough. That answer is a complicated one. I definitely see where the game shines, but it's not without its flaws.

Graphics
My review will start with one of the first thing you'll ever notice about a game, the graphics. Now I'm sure the screenshots show well enough that this doesn't always look like a normal Mario game. Plenty of environments were copy pasted from Super Mario World. Many others come from different series though, including a Sonic the Hedgehog level at one point. Nostalgia fans will be in for a real treat later in, with some levels being remakes of Mario's classic games, including stages based off the classic Mario games. There's even a homage to the original Mario Bros arcade game, complete with black background and classic enemies. While I'd love to say all positive things about the graphics, they lose points due to the glitched Bullet Bill item. In most stages, it works just fine. In stages where you're underground or in a fortress though, the sprite glitches and fires an item that depends on the stage. It's a small gripe, but one I feel is very obvious due to how often you'll likely have the Bullet Bill item. The graphics are still nice though, so I rate them a 7/10

Sound
As you'd expect from a Mario hack, the sound here is all very well... Read the rest of this Review
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy\'s Kong Quest

My favorite game of the DKC series
Well, I'm finally writing a review again. It's been forever since I actually wrote a review for a game, so I decided to get back into things with one of my favorite games from the Donkey Kong Country series. DKC 2 was a marked improvement over the original in many ways, including stage design, level music, and of course boss battles. Now, without any more hyping of the game before we even get into the review, let's start off with the one thing that maybe wasn't as good as it's predecessor, the graphics.

Graphics:While I loved DKC2, I have to admit the graphics really never were hugely impressive compared to many other games on the Super Nintendo. They're nice to look at with no glitches I've seen, but I find that the original game had equal if not better graphics for some locations. This might be partially due to the pirate theme that this game tends to use, along with the levels that seem to take place in a location that repeats. Some levels, such as the mine shaft ones, seem like the exact same place except with different platforms and layouts. So some areas tend to feel a bit of the same from a graphical standpoint. This is not a huge problem though, as the colors are still nice and I never ran into anything that I really had any problem with when I played through the game. I give the graphics an 8. They're very good for the Super Nintendo, but I feel a repeat in areas might have hurt it, along with the fact I do think some games on the system did look better.

Sound:While the graphics in this game never proved hugely impressive to me, the sound actually was something I found myself always loving. The music in this game really always managed to make me enjoy a level no matter how irritating it would normally be, and in some places either fit the scene, or manage to make it much better then normal. A prime example of this is the level Bramble Blast, generally thought of to be one of the hardest levels in the game, with many players dying repeatedl... Read the rest of this Review
Mega Man 3

Another Great Mega Man game.
Well, here we are with another Mega Man game. I recently beat Mega Man 2, and decided to go right to Mega Man 3 afterwards. I admit, I was surprised that I enjoyed it almost as much as I did the second game in the series. They're both great games, but there are different reasons for why I like each. Anyway, I suppose I should stop comparing this game to Mega Man 2 and get on to what the review is really about, judging this game based on it's own merit. So, without further ado, my review of Mega Man 3.

Graphics: It's hard to talk about graphics in this game, due to them being very similar to Mega Man 2. I will try to say what I can about them though. As you'd expect, the environments and enemies look very good, maybe even better then Mega Man 2 at some points. Though, the lack of real backgrounds for many stages gets a bit disappointing, such as the dull green that fills the back of Snake Man's level. This isn't a huge problem, due to the fact your attention is almost always on the foreground. The animations are just as good if not better then the last game, with nice movement and animations from enemies. It might be even better, seeing Mega Man's slide move he has gained, which he does pull off without a hitch normally. Really, the only large problem is the flickering, which doesn't get any better from Mega Man 2. It can be annoying, but it's easy to deal with it you ignore it. I give the graphics an 8 out of 10, for being more of the same from Mega Man 2, with some small differences in the characters and environments.

Sound: I'm sorry to say that I don't enjoy the music quite as much as I did in Mega Man 2. This is mostly due to the fact there aren't as many great songs in the game. Sure there are some amazing tracks, but most don't really make me remember them for long periods of time. In fact, I forget most of the game's music by this point. This isn't hugely awful though. While I don't remember the music, I know it was nice to li... Read the rest of this Review
Mega Man 2

Maybe the best Mega Man game out there.
Mega Man 2 is often considered one of the best Mega Man games out there. Though how does it really hold up when you play it again? It is an old game, and we all know that games that were great long ago might not have aged well. In good news, I think the game has aged very well. I enjoyed my entire playthrough was pretty enjoyable except for a few parts, and those small problems aren't enough to stop you from playing through it. So anyway, let's get on to the main bulk of this review.

Graphics: Mega Man 2's graphics are very good for a game on the NES. Each sprite is detailed enough for you to be able to easily tell what it is, and a lot of the enemy designs are actually pretty cool. Mega Man himself also looks very good for the time, having more colors then most NES sprites are normally able too. I've heard that this is because Mega Man is actually two sprites put together, and this is what gives him his multiple colors. I'm not sure if this is true, but I could believe it. The environments are also nice, having backgrounds to show you where each stage is set. The animations seem to be decent, each character moving well and not doing anything that'd ruin the feel of the game. The only problem with the graphics is the large amount of flashing they tend to do. Though, this can easily be ignored. Overall, the graphics get an eight. They're very good, but the flashing tends to be noticeable when it happens.

Sound: While the graphics had their small problems, the sound is a different matter. The sound in Mega Man 2 might actually be the closest thing to perfect we have on the NES. Each stage theme is very good and are well known among gamers as being fun and easy to listen to. Some of my favorites were Metal Man's and Bubble Man's themes. Though every track I listened to was very good in my opinion. Really, I had no problems with any of the stage music. Though, while all the music was good, I did have one complaint. This is the lack of a true ... Read the rest of this Review
Sonic Christmas 2011

Some cool levels, an easy boss battle, then.. It's over?
As you know if you read my review on the last Sonic hack I played, I liked the idea, but not the execution very much. This game seemed to change that at first. The graphics were very nice and I liked the stage designs. I really enjoyed my first time playing through this hack. That's the problem though. I did really enjoy my time playing through it, but it's far too short.

Graphics: I'll start with what I did really love about this hack. The graphics were very nice and fit the season well. The snow on the ground looks like actual snow, and the background is well added in and really brings the feeling of the season. It helps that this game doesn't merely switch colors. It redoes whole textures to make everything more like Christmas, even adding winter trees in among the stage. Another nice feature is that the rings are replaced with stars. Strangely though, Sonic glows most of the hack, like he's in Super or Hyper Sonic form. Overall, the graphics are very nice, even if the only background is a snowy mountain. I give the graphics a nine, for looking good and going with the Christmas theme. Though there is a lack of variety.

Sound: The sound isn't much to talk about in this hack. Mostly it's just one Christmas themed song, and the boss theme from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. All of Sonic's actions still make noise and you still get the normal in game sounds from Sonic the Hedgehog. Really, all I can say is that everything sounds the way it should. The fact they only play two songs is disappointing to me though. They could have used a different track for a different act. But instead it's just two tracks, and one is only used for an end of game boss encounter. Overall, the sound gets an eight. It's pretty nice to listen to, like the game it came from. But there's very little variety and not much else.

Addictiveness: You might be moderately addicted to this game for a playthrough or two. Mostly because there's ... Read the rest of this Review
