Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Master System)
Previously, I decided to review Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis, a game full of speed, color, and overall awesomeness, and it truly deserves to be labeled one of the best titles out there for the Genesis. But I had discovered a year ago that there was actually a different version of the game released around the same time as the Genesis title for the Sega Master System and the Game Gear version. And with only a few exceptions, the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog is completely different from the 16-bit version. Most people don't even know about or tend not to really care about the 8-bit version, and while I think the Genesis version is superior to the SMS and Game Gear version, I still enjoyed the game a lot. So today, I will be reviewing this under-appreciated game, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Master System. Just a quick note, the Game Gear version is pretty much the same, except for a slightly different final boss, which I'll discuss when we get there.

Sonic controls exactly how he did on the Genesis version, although it might take bit getting used to. All the items from the Genesis title are back here, but with the introduction of another. Instead of the traditional checkpoint goal posts we have had since the beginning, they are represented by boxes with down arrows on them, which you break to mark your checkpoint if you die. You can also get continues in boxes, but those are only in the special stages. Speaking of special stages, let's get into that. In this game, there are 6 Chaos Emeralds to collect for a slightly different ending (find out what it is for yourself :P). However, they are not in special stages. They are actually hidden in certain acts of every zone. We'll get to that soon, but let's actually take a look at the special stages. To access them, have 50 rings with you at the end of Act 1 or 2 of a zone. There is no giant ring to jump it, just passing the goal sign will make it show an exclamation point, sending you. Special stages a... Read the rest of this Review
Legend of Zelda, The

The Legend of Zelda
Today, gamers alike at least know about the Legend of Zelda series. Spawning numerous games that have mostly received positive reception (glares at the Cd-i), these games have always brought gamers all the fun it could give. But today, I"m gonna review the game that started the entire series, The Legend of Zelda.

Released on the NES in 1986, this game was pretty ground-breaking at the time, from what I've heard. Top-down perspective gameplay with plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of exploration to it, this game is a great game to buy. Now, I should get into the story, which is actually decent for an NES game, and the game at least goes out and explains the plot in game if you do nothing on the title screen. Ganon, the prince of darkness, has stolen the Triforce of Power for himself. Before being captured and held prisoner by Ganon, Princess of Zelda of the Hyrule kingdom breaks her part of the Triforce, the Triforce of Courage, into eight pieces. Now it is up to you, Link, to retrieve the pieces, resting in 8 dungeons, and defeat Ganon and save Zelda. Pretty simple, right?

Control-wise, the game does handle well for its time, but if you play a game like Link to the Past, the combat controls completely beat out the original game's control. Once you get the sword, you hit A to attack with it, sticking it out right in front of you. If you're at full health, you shoot a projectile out of it. B is for all of the items you'll be using, which I'll get to in a minute. Start brings up the item list, and select pauses the game without bringing up the items. Basic controls are basic, although the sword might take a little bit getting used to.

There are plenty of items that you'll be collecting. First is a heart, which restores one heart on your life bar. Then there is the Heart Container, which adds an entire new heart to your life bar. You'll always get one after defeating a dungeon's boss, but there are hidden ones in the main world. Then there is the Fai... Read the rest of this Review
Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Previously I made a review for the original Sonic the Hedgehog. I figure I might as well do all of the Sonic Genesis games (even the spin-offs, but that will take some time). So here it is, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Genesis. Released in 1992, this eventually became the best-selling game on the Genesis, and for good reason too. While not my favorite Sonic game, or even favorite Sonic game on the Genesis, there is plenty of things about this game that any gamer out there can enjoy. With still great graphics for its time, especially with how colorful everything looks compared to the first game, great soundtrack, and plenty of speed to go around, this definitely earns the title of best-selling game on the Genesis.

Plot-wise, it's pretty much the same as the previous title. Dr. Robotnik is once again kidnapping animals to turn into robots, and it's your job to save them all. Just like in the first game, the  controls are pretty much the same. Except for one thing. This is the first Sonic game to introduce the iconic Spin Dash, where you hold down and the jump button to start spinning on the ground. Release to launch yourself at high speed to plow through everything. Basically, this is a quick way to get speed to defeat a row of enemies, speed through loops, and get up slopes. All the items from the last game are back here as well. Ring boxes, speed sneakers, all that jazz. The new thing in this game is a new character, Miles "Tails" Prower, a two-tailed genius fox, all though that is really shown until the 3D Sonic games. Did you know his name is a pun on the phrase "miles per hour"? :P He doesn't really do anything in the main game, he just follows you and mimics your movements. HE can hit enemies if you make him jump into them, though. Oh, and he can't die. He'll just fly down from the top of the screen and return. And he makes the special stages harder since he follows you loosely and will constantly run into bombs and drop rings needed to win. While ... Read the rest of this Review

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog. A platformer released in 1991 on the Genesis, it soon became one of the most popular games on the system. Sonic was also a core element in how Sega briefly began to outdo Nintendo in the markets (but that wouldn't last very long, now would it? :P) Anyway, let's get into some features of the game.

There really is no story to speak of, unless you read the manual of course. Dr. Ivo Robotnik has begun kidnapping animals and turning them into robots for his evil plans to rule the world, and it's up to you, Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue hedgehog with spiky hair, epic shoes, and attitude, to rescue all of the animals. Now that that's out of the way, on to what Sonic can do and what he can get.

Sonic can do what pretty much everyone platform character can do, walk/run and jump. But you see, Sonic is all about speed as well. HE can run pretty fast, mainly when running down slopes. TO defeat enemies , you can simply jump on them (except for spike enemies, of course) or you can roll into them by hitting the down button as you run towards them (too bad the Spin Dash isn't here). If you use this rolling technique on a downward slope, you can achieve some massive speed and possibly make it to a few new areas. You can also reach certain platforms and bounce pretty high by using yellow springs, which launch you a good distance, red springs that launch you a great distance, and bouncing on multiple enemies, which earn you points. That doesn't really matter, since the score serves no real use at all in this game.

Along his travels, Sonic will run into some television set-like boxes that contain items in them. First is the Ring Box, which gives you 10 Rings. Rings are essentially your health in this game, because if you run into enemies without rings, you die, so you'll want to hold onto at least one ring. Thankfully, if you're hit while holding rings, you still have a shot at getting them back before they vanish. However, even if you have r... Read the rest of this Review

Goldeneye 007
SPOILER ALERT:

IF you want to read what happens in the game, read on. IF you want to see my actual scores, skip to the bottom. Warning you right now :P

Goldeneye 007. Easily one of the best game on the N64 and one of the best games ever made. To start off, I might as well share everything in the game.

Goldeneye was one of the first games I've ever played, and I can sure thank my brothers for introducing me to it as a kid. I remember starting up the Dam mission, and from the moment the epic switch to FPS after a brief glimpse of the Dam happened, I was hooked instantly. Killing bad guys with the sniper rifle was one of the highlights of the level.

Moving on to the Facility, one of the most well known levels from the game for various reasons, the start from the air conditioning vents and the guard standing up over the toilet. You just got to rescue a certain scientist, blow up some gas tanks, and gtfo. Overall, a great level to play.

After apparently witnessing 006's death at the hands of Ouromov, you escape the gunfire into the Runway, probably the shortest level in the game with a random tank for no reason. It's well known mainly just for the tank, and the crunch sound it makes when you run over a bad guy. Short, simple, and easy to handle this level is.

Surface I is our first snow level in the game with some great music. We’re introduced to the pathetic Klobb (I still use it the most though….) and the Grenade Launcher (damn near pointless to use by the time you get it XD) Overall a great level.

Now we infiltrate the base and end up in the Bunker, with one of the best tracks in the game. It really did creep me out (ya know, till the drum kicked in :P). This isn’t a very long level, you can beat it pretty quickly once you know what the heck you’re doing, but this is another great level. Hey, you can also enslave and/or kill ...
