Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter (Euro 970625)

MARVEL HEROES AGAINST STREET FIGHTER CHARACTERS
Let's get one thing straight. I love Marvel Comics. In fact this game went a long way in defining the Marvel characters for me in the 90's. When I'd go to an arcade, I always spent time and a lot of money playing this game. It was because of this game that I started reading the Marvel comic books. The game was released for the arcade in 1997, Sega Saturn in 1998 and Sony PlayStation in 1999. This game appears to be ported from the arcade version as it tells you to insert coins.

As far as the game itself goes it is a perfect 10. What's not to love? It features some of my favorite characters and represents them pretty accurately too. The graphics and sound are typical of 90's arcade (and part of what makes this game so appealing). The levels are amazing looking. The addictiveness is off the map. You won't be able to play this just once. I promise you this, especially if you love Marvel or Street Fighter. There is very little story here, though I suspect we are supposed to believe that the Marvel guys got into it with the Capcom guys and that is the reason why we have these great battles. You can play as Blackheart, Captain America, Cyclops (I play best with him), Hulk, Omega Red, Shuma Gorath, Spiderman (my favorite character), Wolverine, Akuma, Chun-Li, Dan, Dhalsim (my favorite character to play on the Street Fighter side), Ken, Ryu, M. Bison and Sakura.  Akuma and Apocalypse serves as the final boss. It's a shame Blanka and Guile are not seen in the game. There are also secret characters in the game as well, including U.S. Agent and Armored Spider-Man. The gameplay is great. The controls are great as well (on the keyboard the controls are: Left Control, Alt, Spacebar and Left Shift with arrows moving the character). As far as depth goes, this game is considered middle of the road. There are 8 levels to beat and as mentioned before, Apocalypse and Akuma being the final bosses. Where difficulty is concerned, this game can be difficult when playing th... Read the rest of this Review
Batman Returns

BATMAN RETURNS
Frigid winter winds swept over an already chilled Gotham City.
Random street crimes were running at an all-time high, despite the
holidays. Down below, in the city's frozen sewers, Oswald Cobblepot,
known as The Penguin, planned more mayhem and schemed the take over of
the frightened metropolis. His loyal army of missile-packing Penguin
Commandos and the bizarre Red Triangle Circus Gang are energized by the
evil genius of the web-footed orphan. A desperate call to Batman goes
up.
Or so says the description of this game... Batman Returns. To begin with, this is one of the best games that was ever put on the SNES. A perfect 10. As a fan of Batman I was presently surprised to see this on here. I have a lot of Batman comics and love the movie this is based on as well. As a Batman game it excels. As a movie adaptation it does pretty good too. Graphics are some of the best the SNES has ever seen. The sounds of the game are minimal with Batman themed music and standard beat em up sounds. It is highly addictive as you will find yourself wanting to play this game more and more. The story is great, ripped right out of the movie. A decent adaptation that sees Batman fighting thugs from the Red Triangle gang, Catwoman and Penguin. It takes a while to play as there are 7 stages. The game can also be difficult as shooting the bat-grapple is tricky and fighting the last 2 bosses can be frustrating.

Overall, this is a very good game. A very fun and addictive beat em up and is great for Batman fans. PLAY THIS NOW!
Superman 2 (prototype)

Superman 2 (prototype)
Superman 2 (prototype) was an arcade game that was never released but with the dawn of the home console was released for the NES. It is a basic flying and beat em up game that allows you to play as the pre eminent superhero of them all, Superman. The first level is where you fly above and near buildings dodging projectiles and at the end fighting a giant chopper. It is essentially the tutorial of the game. In the first level you can fly and punch and shoot little beams (your heat vision) at the chopper.

The game's graphics are standard when compared to graphics of the time that the NES reigned supreme among home consoles. The coloring is quite rich however for a game of its time. The graphics are 2D and this is a side scroller. The game's sound is very low in quality but does feature a MIDI version of the John Williams Superman theme and basic in game sound effects. As far as addictiveness goes, the game is not the easiest to play, but because of the flying levels, it has a decent replay value. If you get bored, you can still have fun controlling Superman's flying. As far as story goes, there is very little story here (although there is story). You are basically Superman flying and fighting your way through the game, fighting baddies and fighting the boss that shows up at the end of every level. Many of the levels feature you flying upwards, scaling the tallest of buildings while avoiding various projectiles that are shot at you. At the end you get to save Lois Lane. With respect to depth, the game actually has  long levels. It would probably take even the most seasoned and hurried player about 45 minutes to beat the game. As I mentioned before, the game is not the easiest to play and the player can get overwhelmed when trying to dodge projectiles or avoid various hits from the game's baddies. As a result, the difficulty is just above moderate. New players may quickly become frustrated.

Overall, Superman 2 is a fun game because of the flying... Read the rest of this Review
