Shoot Out 08-08-12 10:01 AM |
Shootout Shootout is an old western cowboy style game. The player must start by shooting jars off of cacti in a set time limit, if you can't shoot all the jars within the time limit, you go to the high score screen and its game over. Then the player squares off against various enemies that pop up around the town. You may also choose to be with or without lives. If you choose without, you can't lose in the second round (fighting enemies in the town). Graphics The graphics are nothing spectacular, but at least everything doesn't look the same. There are two settings, the desert filled with cacti, and the town, filled with goons. The graphics are passable, but nothing more than that, at least you can make out what the jars look like. Sound In game there is no sound, other than the firing of guns. Music does play during the high score screen, but it's nothing fancy. Addictiveness This game is like a game you would play at an arcade, it's not overly addictive but you can kill some time here. It's fun just to get the hang of, but after two or three rounds it gets very repetitive and starts to lose it's novelty. Depth It has more depth than some of the other games for the C64, though not by much. It has two different play areas. The first you must shoot down a number of jars within a set time limit. Each jar nets you some points, however, if you don't shoot every jar, it's game over. The second area is walking around the town. You are given a set number of people to kill and must notice them jumping up around in the houses and shoot at them. If you are not quick enough you'll be shot and lose a life. Difficulty Like most C64 games, it has a bit of a learning curve, you don't have much time to figure out how to aim and shoot and by the time you start to get the hang of it, you're already dead. However, the game does give you the option ... Read the rest of this Review |
Shoot the rapids 08-08-12 12:02 AM |
Shoot The Rapids Shoot the rapids is an arcade game. You're in a canoe and going up a river, apparently full of rapids. Your goal is to go from start to finish following a slalom. The game tracks your time and gives you a high score. Graphics The graphics are basic and simple, a stick man riding a canoe down a river. The shore is green and the river blue, basic C64 graphics. Sound I wasn't a big fan of the music for this game, at least it was consistent throughout the entire game, just your basic "techno" music playing in the background, nothing special. Addictiveness I personally found it had the addictiveness of a challenging online game. The type that frustrates you to no end, and yet you just want to beat it. But once you've beaten it, even with the high scores, there doesn't seem like much reason for a replay. It's addictive for all of 20 minutes. Depth Only one play mode, the time trial. The river is fairly short and doesn't take long to traverse. Difficulty In order to go through the slalom flags you must position your canoe perfectly through them, some are difficult, and some simple, as you start to get the hang of it, this becomes much simpler. However, the controls are a bit annoying (I could never get the backstroke to work). The game requires some practice for sure, but is not impossible. Overall If you feel like playing an online game, this one could probably grab your fancy for a while. It takes some getting used to, but all in all, its a decent time killer. |
Shuttle War 08-07-12 10:51 PM |
Shuttle War Shuttle War is a head-to-head multi-player game. Both players are spaceships, or "shuttles" and must shoot at each other in an attempt to destroy your opponent. If you need to kill 10 minutes and have a buddy around go ahead and fool around with this, I wouldn't put much more time into it than that. Graphics I haven't played the Commodore 64 before, so I am no expert on their graphics, however there is very little detail put into the game. It is nothing but two shuttles and a line through the middle. Compared to other games on the Commodore 64, this is quite a simple design. Sound Honestly, the start up screen has a nice tune going for it. I kind of like it. Unfortunately, that's all it has in the sound department. After the title screen a low, constant buzzing noise can be heard, almost annoying. Then once one of the shuttles fire at each other, the buzzing stops and is replacing by the sound of a laser shooting. No music is played, or background effects other than the firing of lasers. Addictiveness The game isn't overly addictive, like was mentioned earlier, a good ten minute killer with a buddy, but nothing more. Depth The game offers no depth, no extra game styles, no AI. One play mode, Player vs. Player. Overall I would pass this game right by. |
