Battle Unit Zeoth
07-27-23 10:09 PM
A surprising enjoyable game
This game is another one of the gameboy cartridges that came with the gameboy back in the late 2000s. This one was a weird one for me as I didn’t even touch it until cartridges started disappearing from the bag. Though playing it as a kid had some fun, how does it do to these days with a different perspective? This is Battle Unit Zeoth for the Gameboy (emulation)

Story : 8

42 years have passed since the Earth was invaded by aliens. It’s at peace until the Grein, a metallic species, resurface from an underground base and ready to attack the earth again.

Basically, using a robot suit, you go out and shoot aliens and save the earth from an alien attack. It’s a neat idea for the gameboy and a nice distraction from the whole Mario land and Tetris games.

It’s an 8 out of 10. Story is unoriginal but it is fairly simple on a gameboy.

Graphics : 8

The graphics look pretty good for the game. I think it was released in 1990 or 1991, and how it has improve from graphics of Mario land or Alleyway (examples) you start to see the potential of the handheld with the power it can bring to hands. Bosses are rather large and as detailed as they can get in the game. Stages, albeit a little sparse in the background due to limitations, the activity is always active when shooting enemies or obstacles. Not much to say in this.

It’s an 8 out of 10. With the limitations of the handheld they did a pretty good job in 1990.

Sound : 9

The sound of the game is surprisingly good. Yes the gameboy beeps and audio is subpar but they made good use of the sound. The shooting does have a screeching noise, enemies make a weird exploding sound when destroyed. The music changes every stage and that’s pretty cool, and I know they loop but it takes like a minute or so, haven’t really paid attention since it wasn’t as noticeable. The boss music will always be the same though.

The sound is a 9 o... Read the rest of this Review
Super Super Mario Land

A good launch title for the Gameboy
A small review for today as I’m at work right now and using emulation to play this game. It’s one of those games I played when my younger sibling has gotten a gameboy and it can with a bunch of gameboy games like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Battle unite Zeoth, and game and watch gallery 3. Out of those games, there were two games that came with it, one was a pack in game back then and the other is a sequel. I mean granted it can be Tetris and Tetris 2 but that’s not what I’m talking about. This is for a review for the mascot himself in a handheld game, Super Mario Land for Gameboy (used by emulation).

Story : 7

From the manual, there is a place away from the  mushroom kingdom called Sarasaland, which an alien creature named Tatanga came from a dark cloud to conquer the land. Kidnapping the princess to marry her while controlling the citizens of this fine city, Mario heard of the events and traveled to Sarasaland to save the princess and restore peace or will he fail as the space creature marries Princess Daisy and take over the land?

It’s the same old Mario saves the Princess trope but instead of being Princess peach and Bowser it’s now about Princess Daisy and an alien from outer space. Weird but credit it due.

It’s a 7 out of 10. Same old story but with different characters. Doesn’t get old at this moment.

Graphics : 7

The graphics were okay for a Gameboy launch title and a pack in game. Nothing too spectacular as it’s just the beginning of the system’s life cycle. You can definitely tell that it is Mario and the enemy sprites aren’t bad. Level designs are not that awful either, developers tried their best to make it feel like Mario but in their own variation. You’ve got green, dark green, light green, soft green and a dark dark green for color palettes which aren’t bad. (Yes it’s a joke)

Graphics is a 7 out of 10. It’s a decent try for a launch title for the system. ... Read the rest of this Review
Capcom vs SNK 2

“Dream event of the 21st century”
This game I was exposed as a kid back in 2006. I saw it on the Xbox and was instantly hooked due to knowing what the characters were and seen it somewhere in tv before. I haven’t been able to play it until I’ve gotten a PS2 physical copy in 2014 but since it’s cracked, I can only play through emulation. This game is a sequel to the first one I’ve recently reviewed a while back and this one is more so the same but with new features. Is it worthy of a sequel or did it falter? This is Capcom vs Snk 2 : Mark of the Millennium 2001 for PlayStation 2 by use of emulation.

Story : 8

The game starts with another tournament hosted by both the Masters Foundation and the Garcia Financial Clique. With this fighters from the previous tournament re-enter once more with new fighters coming in from all over the world to challenge each other and win the coveted prize of cash and being named the best fighter in the world.

The series is basically the same as the last game before with evil hidden within the tournament, except with different bosses this time as the game focuses more on an expanded roster of fighters and such.

It’s an 8 out of 10. The game is still interesting but it’s reusing the same plot as last year’s game which dulls a bit.

Graphics : 8

The intro starts off pretty good to attract people to play the game with thunderstorms and volcanic eruptions and Ryu and Kyo in the area ready to fight.

Again, let’s draw the negatives. Character designs are lazy for half and good for the rest. Capcom again reusing assets for most of the characters while the more popular characters get a redesign to fit the game. Some don’t even look good at all and using the same model as the 90s (Morrigan) and they just don’t fit the game’s aesthetics. Snk are completely redrawn and look stunning. The character models are one of the best I’ve seen yet for an Snk game and it shows the quality that they d... Read the rest of this Review
Capcom vs. SNK

A first in the console. A crossover you’ve never thought.
This game is pretty recent on my game time, I think since 2020 I been playing this game. Another crossover which I enjoyed for a while and such. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I’ve played the neo geo pocket game and I am just saying, is this game any good for a console or should it just stay in the console? This is Capcom vs Snk : Millennium Match 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast (emulation).

Story : 8

The story is about a tournament, financed by the Masters Foundation and the Garcia Financial, where the greatest fighters in the world sign up for a chance of glory as two of the biggest franchises of the time come together to see who’s the strongest in the world. What they don’t know is the evil that’s hidden behind the scenes.

The intro of the game catches the viewers eyes with “Everybody rumored, no one believed” with the background audio repeating “Capcom vs Snk” and it was a crossover long awaited (the first being on the NeoGeo pocket if I recall).

Story is an 8 out of 10. A tournament bringing two franchises together is a great idea but the whole evil thing, still overused.

Graphics : 8

The intro presents outer space with the Milky Way and it starts traveling past planets and stars until its arrival to earth when the logo appears with 3D skyscrapers. It’s an eye popper and the planets and such look pretty good. Waiting for a bit does show the high scores and character models.

Character models are a mixed bag. The SNK models look pretty good and consistent to one another where they work well with the gameplay. Capcom characters… they’re a mixed bag. Players like Ryu and Ken have models similar to the snk side but when you go after some like Sakura, Zangief or Vega, they have a more Alpha 3 look to it and it doesn’t fit the whole aesthetic. I mean if they could make new models for M. Bison, Ken and such characters, why not all? The animation is pretty smooth and ... Read the rest of this Review
Twisted Metal III

One of the worst in the series
(How many times will I say edgy?) This is the last game I’ve played for the series before getting my hands on the PS2 installment in the series. Not much to say about it other than it’s a quick fix back in the day (2009) when the fourth title broke and there was no way to play the game other than a demo version of the second game. Though was this game really as bad as people thought or were we too critical? This is Twisted Metal III for the PlayStation (through emulation).

Story : 6

The game sets you in the year 2008 I think? I’m assuming because the first level you hear Calypso stating “the great earthquake of 2007 months ago” so there’s that. Anyways basically the story is mostly about car destruction all around the world and the winner is granted a wish of any choice. It’s the same old trope that hasn’t changed much at all with the series. The only difference is really the location. Twisted metal had a warehouse, Twisted Metal II was in top of a tower. Twisted Metal III, in a blimp. Each character has a wish of their own they want fulfilled and they do have endings so there’s that.

It’s a 6 out of 10. Game is dull with the same plot as the previous titles but the game is still fun.

Graphics : 6

The graphics are atrocious for 1998. The CGI animation, one of the worst intros I’ve seen. I know they were going for an edgy animation with heavy metal music but the models look so stiff, the facial expressions look blank, the artwork… I’m not sure if it’s some cel shading or what but it’s just horrible to look at. Pffft even the characters themselves are just kind of terrible. I’ve seen better graphics from lower budget games and this is supposed to be one of the staples for Sony?

The stages are pretty lackluster and void of personality. Some are just an open area with one or two higher levels and the creativity just isn’t there. Some stages just feel too claustrophobic to man... Read the rest of this Review
