Dragon Warrior IV

The Chapters of the Chosen
Intro:
Dragon Warrior IV, a classic for the NES. Released in 1992, the game did not fare well in the United States, as it was released during the 16 bit era. Though, those who found this gem, were greeted with a game with an interesting structure, wonderful music, and wacky characters.

Presentation:
Dragon Warrior IV presents itself very well. The music of the game is varied and is a joy to listen to, such as a frantic, calypso theme (Gypsy's Dance), a bouncy theme for an adventurous Princess (March of the Capricious Princess), and a lonely theme when the main hero is abandoned (Homeworld). The music is an amazing feat for an 8-bit game. The graphics on the other hand, could have been much better. Being such a late NES game, I would expect much more of the graphics. The colors of the character sprites do not match at all with their actual characters, and a lot of graphics are recycled in the overworld and towns. In battles though, the graphics are wonderful! The monsters are extremely detailed, and look exactly like their concept artwork. Overall, the presentation is very good, with amazing music and wonderful monster graphics.

Addictiveness:
The game suffers a bit in this section. Most of the game was very addicting, for their isn't much grinding at all, and the chapters of the game keep you engaged...except for chapter 3, "Taloon the Arms Merchant." In this chapter, the character Taloon has to raise money for various things, forcing you to grind (in a game where you don't need to grind that much, as stated before). For replayability, though, you may want to play this game again, as there are 7 characters in total that you can switch using, who have different skills and abilities to try out. Overall, this game is addictive, though chapter 3 is a chore to get through.

Story:
The story of the game is presented in a very interesting way, as each chapter you learn the back story of different characters you play as. I'll summar... Read the rest of this Review
Final Fantasy III (english translation)

The Forgotten Fantasy
Intro:

Final Fantasy III- the "unsung hero" of the fantasies. Final Fantasy III was released for the Famicom in Japan in 1990, but nowhere else until its decent DS remake. Being in the dark for so long, many fans tend to forget about this gem of the series. To their dismay, they are missing out on a whimsical yet challenging adventure awaiting inside!

Presentation:

The presentation of the game is excellent. The graphics are well-done, filled with very detailed enemy sprites and shading. The character designs are also detailed and varied, from a horned Summoner, to a cat-cape wearing Shaman. The music is remarkable, with grand 8-bit tunes that are ageless. My favorite is probably the final boss's theme- "This is the Final Battle". It starts off simple, but then develops into a calypso-like tune with an allegro tempo. Other highlights are "Battle 1"- a very catchy battle theme, "The Invincible"- an epic melody when you fly in the "Invincible" airship, and "The Crystal Tower"- a simple tune with unique accompaniment that plays in the final dungeon. Overall, the presentation is very impressive.

Addictiveness:

This game is pretty addictive! While in the game, you will go through different scenarios to keep you 'hooked', such as a Midget village, a grand castle town, a Chocobo forest, a manor full of cute Moogles, a job system, and three worlds: spoiler: floating continent, overworld, and underwater overworld (end of spoiler). The job system alone will guarantee many different play-throughs as there are 22 different jobs. The difficulty does have a factor in the addictiveness, as sometimes you may have to grind, which to some people, may be very boring. Overall, the game's features keep it addicting, while the difficulty does not.

Depth:

Final Fantasy III has an incredible amount of depth. As shown above, there... Read the rest of this Review
Dragon Quest V (English by DeJap)

A Heavenly Game!
Intro:
This is my favorite Dragon Quest game, and my second favorite game (my favorite game being MOTHER 3). This Dragon Quest game was not originally released here for the Super Nintendo, but eventually the world had the chance to experience this gem in the wonderful DS remake, but didn't sell very well (it did okay). This is such a shame, the reason for this (not releasing on the SNES, that is) was because Enix of America gave up on selling RPGs here. If they released it here at the time, people would probably see why this game is so amazing!

Presentation:
The presentation of the game overall is nice. The soundtrack is one of Sugiyama's greatest, with tunes that will never leave your head....EVER. A few rememberable compositions are the Over-world theme (fitting for when you are going to the next town), the Faerie world theme (It is so..bouncy and jolly, it makes me just wanna dance!), the Boat theme (it is very fitting for its nautical melody), and the Castle theme (really fitting as well, for it is fanfare-like tune). The graphics on the other hand, are...okay. They didn't really improve much compared to the NES games, besides colour, which is still "solid." In game like Chrono Trigger, for example, you could look at any character's face and see many shades of a colour. This game just uses a single block of colour (or two colours) for each area. (Look at screenshots for further analysis). Nevertheless, the graphics are still suitable. While the graphics are average, the soundtrack of the game makes up for it, resulting in (as stated) a nice presentation.

Addictiveness:
Once I started this game, I was determined to complete it from the start. The story engaged me in such a way that I felt a "bond" with the Hero. The game also has replay value, because during the game you choose your own bride. (Tenkuu no Hanayome means Hand of the Heavenly Bride). In the game you also get to recruit monsters, which leads to... Read the rest of this Review
