Centipede
06-02-13 08:47 PM
Coming to a Garden Near You!
What can I say about Centipede? Well, for starters, it is an arcade classic. But how does it stand up to the other arcade classics of its time? Let's take a look.

Graphics: 5/10

Nothing special here. This is about what I would expect from a game of this era. It mostly consists of neon-colored pixels that make up mushrooms and other various obstacles. As the levels advance, the centipede changes color, as well as most of the other features on the board. The tint of psychedelic atmosphere makes this game a bit more attention-grabbing as opposed to most.

Sound: 4/10

Just your basic shooting sound-effects; again, nothing you wouldn't expect from an arcade game. Some of the enemies make thumping and buzzing noises as they advance toward you, but that's about all there is to be expected.

Addictiveness: 6/10

Surprisingly addictive. I prefer games that are much more in depth, but the gameplay is surprisingly entrancing. The vibrant neon colors draw you in, but it's the nostalgia of trying to get that nothing short of legendary high-score which keeps you playing. The game keeps moving forward, forcing even the most talented of arcade gamers to be on their toes.

Story: 2/10

As most arcade games go, there isn't much here. You are a ship that has a destiny to clear out funky mushrooms from his garden, all the while destroying centipedes and avoiding spiders (and in some versions, other occasional insects). Who knows who he is, or why he feels the need to save the world from hippie arthropods, but one thing is for certain; he makes for a strange hero.

Depth: 3/10

The only thing that gives Centipede any real depth, is the game progression. The stages change from one to the other, and enemies tend to get faster. Often times, the mushrooms may change position or grow back in unwanted places. It beats repeating the same scenery over and over until you die.

Twisted Tales of Spike McFang, The

Real Vampires Drink Tomato Juice

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang is a quirky little Action-RPG filled with visual puns, and it's just down-right interesting in concept. I recall playing this as a small child, and I didn't quite understand the mechanics of an RPG at the time, but I loved it nonetheless. Being able to replay it as an adult, I was still enthralled by its fresh ideas and childish nature. Now that I am much older and have earned more experience with RPGs (yes, pun intended), I was able to enjoy the game far more than when I was a child- at least, for a little while. Although the game has many fun and unusual references to discover, it falls short of greatness. I love the combination of RPG elements and real-time strategy, as I find the intensity superior to the traditional turn-based tactics of most earlier games of the same genre. However, when I say the game falls short, I literally mean that it falls short; play it for a few hours, and you are bound to understand what I mean. As much as I love rambling on with introductions, I think that it's time we got down to the actual elements of the game itself. All aboard the review train!

Graphics: 7/10

The graphics in this game are slightly better than what one would expect from a normal SNES game. The colors are bright, the environments are vivid, and the characters have a hint of an anime-style nature. Despite the game's age, and being developed by an indie company, the 3-D and isometric visuals came together quite nicely. I was impressed by the choice of enemy and character sprites, as they seem to compliment each other nicely. Simply put, the graphics are more of what one would expect from a PSX game, so they were a good step ahead of their time.

Sound: 7/10

There are many SNES games well-known for their musical scores and sound effect compositions, and this one doesn't fail to deliver. Most of the music is orchestrated, and helps give the player an emotional connect... Read the rest of this Review
Gauntlet II

~Developer Needs Brain Badly!~

I know that Gauntlet has been a long-standing classic for arcade gamers and hack-and-slash fans alike, but there are not many aspects of this game worthy of such praise. You start the game in a room, then you see enemies, and then you kill them. Then, there are stairs and doors to other rooms. You enter that room to find pretty much the same thing. Normally, I review games that catch my interest, but every now and then I will throw a review out there to help everyone steer clear of rotten eggs; this is one such egg.

<><><><><>Graphics: 3/10<><><><><>

Alright, I realize that this game is outdated, but I have seen better graphics on an Intellivision. With the games out there that existed for the same system, I think the developers could have produced a much better product graphics-wise. Some sprites are repeatedly used for the same enemies or items, causing confusion and frustration. It doesn't help that everything is the same color, either; the wall and floor tiles can be hard to differentiate from, leaving you with eyestrain long after play. Honestly, the graphics alone make it almost impossible to play. Do you want to spend hours out of your day trying to traverse similar-looking pixel mazes as hoards of unforgiving enemies assail you? I know I don't.

<><><><><>Sound: 5/10<><><><><>

The sound-effects are about the only thing that I found mildly attractive. You have your classic Gauntlet voice-overs, announcing every five minutes that you are about to meet your ultimate end. The enemy attack sounds, cries of pain, and bleeping of items took me back to a simpler time when there was still a good use for quarters. A soundtrack is basically non-present, as the only time you will hear a jingle or two is when you progress forward a floor. This may have been a good idea, seeing as the early handheld systems had is... Read the rest of this Review
Secret of Mana

<>Secret of Mana<>

Secret of Mana is just one of those classic RPGs that breaks the mold on the genre with the introduction of fresh and new ideas. You begin as a young boy from a small village named Potos, and as you are having some mischievous fun with your friends one day, you end up falling from a ledge. You are able to find an efficient path back to your village, however you discover that it is blocked by tall grass. Nearby, you discover a seemingly useless sword that you decide would be sufficient enough to cut through the grass so that you can return to town. Little does the boy know that claiming the sword has triggered a series of events that would change his life; and alter the fate of the entire planet forever.

Gameplay: 8/10
<><><><><><><><><><>

One of the first RPGs ever to feature real-time combat, Secret of Mana has paved the way for countless other RPGs of its genre. The overall functionality of the game works great, and you are able to choose from a variety of magics and weapons to suit your playing style. You are also accompanied by two other characters in which you can customise their combat stances, but it is also possible to have a friend play along with you. This was another major breakthrough in the genre, as there had never been any notable RPGs for a console that were anything other than single player at the time. The storyline is fairly generic, and although there are a few surprises, it mostly sticks to a linear and predictable plot. Regardless of the storyline, the game offers a decent amount of personalization and delivers challenging tactic situations that require quick reflexes. Although the gameplay style fails to achieve its full potential, the open-ended playability is enough to keep you grinding until the end.

Earthbound

<>Earthbound Review<>
Earthbound... where do I begin. This game has put me at a loss for words every since I was a child, from its modern feel to its classic music. You begin the game as a young boy named Ness, whom lives in a seemingly peaceful town called Onett. Then suddenly, one fateful day, everything changes. A meteorite from an unknown origin crash lands in the outskirts of your neighborhood, and an unsettling truth begins to unfold, as Ness comes to realize his true potential. This game puts a modern-day spin on the old-school RPG mechanics, giving the player more attachment to the protagonists as they venture into situations and settings that relate to our generation. Although Earthbound never received much acknowledgement due to poor advertising in America, it has quickly become known all over the world as one of the most masterfully-created RPGs of all time.

Gameplay: 10/10
<><><><><><><><><><>

I will rarely ever give a perfect rating to a game, and it isn't just because Earthbound is my favorite; it is my favorite for a reason. From the sarcastic humor to the insanely creative and metaphorical enemies you will encounter, this game will keep you interested. Not only that, but the amazing storyline and playability add the icing to an already delicious cake. Call your parents when you get homesick, smash up some hippies with a baseball-bat, visit the dinosaur museum in the big city, or just enjoy riding your bike on the beach. Not to mention, the interactive ending was one of the first ever implemented into a game of its genre. Earthbound has something for everyone, and doesn't fail to deliver satisfaction- even over a decade later.
