9-Volt's Last 10 Game Comments (view last 100)
Adventures of Valecule, The I don't get it, what makes this different from the regular Valkyrie game? Is it the translation?
Tinkle Pit (Japan) I like how I basically livetweeted this whole game in screenshots
Rockman 3 - The Last of Mushroom Kingdom I love this hack! It's sort of like SMB Crossover, but better.
Phozon (Japan) I love this game, especially the music
Namco Museum Encore The game selection menu can't display all the games at once, so I'll list them here: King and Balloon, Sky Kid, Rolling Thunder, Wonder Momo, Rompers, and Dragon Saber.
Hyper Pacman How does this...exist?
Foton - The Ultimate Game on Planet Earth Apparently there used to be a lazertag chain with the exact same name
Pepper II Exidy games always have odd hardware to me
BB Car How on earth is this better
45-in-1 My copy of SMB got a glitch once that worked an awful lot like "Visionary Mario"

Elevator Action

ELEVATOR ACTION. More appropriate than it may sound to some
I think I've been going about reviewing games all the wrong way. I just go straight by the categories, without going into detail on much of the actual game. (I'm not going to go back and redo those, though, because I'm lazy. Deal with it.) Here I will try to reform this habit in a new review. And what a better
game than Elevator Action? It doesn't really signify something or anything, but it is a pretty cool game nonetheless. Watch(read: read) as I elaborate.
Ok, so first things first, let's start with the title screen. It starts with an animation of the ELEVATOR letters bouncing up and down as if hung by elastic and then the ACTION letters sliding in, which I think is the coolest thing ever(especially for an era where game logos usually just appearified on screen,
and maybe started flashing different colors after a second or two). On the N, we see some guy with a gun on the top corners. Look at that smug frick. He sure thinks he's some hot stuff. If you aren't on the game's page, imagine Elvis Presley with a tamer, browner 'do, and in his right hand carrying a funky
blue gun pointed UP as if to spite Mega Man. (Actually, can Mega Man shoot up in the newer games? I don't have them. Somebody tell me.) That guy thinks he knows what's up. And is he wielding...a squashed version of Ahab's Crosshairs*? Real guns don't look like that. Also, notice the stars in the O and C
in ACTION. I like that.
Starting the game, we are treated to a cutscene of a brown-haired, brown-shirted("it's more realistic!") guy, presumably your character, grapple onto a building and zipline down to the roof. Before entering an elevator, (the eponymous ACTION ELEVATOR™[nailed it] no doubt[and why does it go to the
roof?]) he ducks down and looks both ways. As if anyone can freaking see him up there. Once the elevator is in the building, you can control him. (Does anyone know this dude's name? Let's call him Mr. Spy for now) He walks in a funny ... Read the rest of this Review
Crackers Revenge V

Crackers Revenge V - Unexpected Mixed Feelings...
Hey, it's me! It has really been a while since I last did a review. Over 4 months, in fact! Here I am reviewing Crackers Revenge V, an amateur(?) game for the Commodore 64, apparently programmed by "Wrench" from a programming team called "The Rat Pack." [Note: I think "Crackers" may have been meant to say "Cracker's" in the game title, if the game's protagonist were to be someone named Cracker.] As usual I will be using the ratings scale found in my SMB(TG16/PCE pirate) review.
Graphics: 6. I've seen much better than this on other C64 games. At the title screen, the game's name is just rendered in plain large text in the middle of the screen, with credits text scrolling by on different rows on the screen. The font is nice at least. The only "decoration" is how it's split up into rows in different moderately attractive colors, and some small animated crudely animated sprites on the top and bottom of the screen. When you get to the game, it's still not that great; Aliens are rendered with 2 colors and the life counter and alien sprites (although recolored) appear to be taken from Namco's Galaxian, with the ship being a simplified 3-color recolor of the Fighter from Galaga. Not impressive so far. Tl;dr: Lackluster. Sprites are totally copied.
Sound: 9 nearing 10. MAN. This is a major step up from the graphics department. The title screen is a well-orchestrated ballad(correct word?) that sets the standard high for introducing an epic game. I could listen to that for while. In fact, I did for a very long time while writing this review(it can't be turned off, Vizzed's fake "pause" button doesn't work, and I kept the game window open for convenience), and I'm still not sick of it. But does it get better? Yes it does. Play the game for yourself. I don't care if other aspects of the game turn you off, you NEED to play this if only for the in-game music. Everyone does. I could get this stuck in my head. It's the kind of jam... Read the rest of this Review
Domino Man

Domino Man - A Classic I Really Should've Reviewed Sooner
Hi, this is 9-Volt reviewing Domino Man. For a long time, I always wanted to review Domino Man. In fact, it was the first game I started reviewing. Unfortunately, I never got around to finishing it. I'd only done the intro (what you're reading right now) and the 'Graphics' section. Well, one day I started to start over with the review and this time, finish it. So here we go, this is 9-Volt reviewing Domino Man! See my review of Super Mario Bros. (TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine pirate) for my ratings scale.

Graphics: 10
Like I've said before, I don't like to rate things a 10 (it looks like an exaggeration every time), but here, what else can I do? An 11? The ingenious Bally Midway MCR II hardware allows for detailed, colorful, big sprites. For whatever reason, the backgrounds and sprites are drawn on a 4:1 scale, making the background look pixelly when played in an emulator. I don't count that as a flaw, however; not only does it look cool, but on the CRT monitors this game was built for, you probably can't tell. Anyway, this game takes full advantage of the MCR II and draws cartoony, recognizable, wacky characters and objects that are easily distinguished. They even have the time for black outlines! The backgrounds also look nice and detailed.

Conclusion: Graphics are colorful and recognizable and take full advantage of the game's advanced hardware.

Sound: 10
Again, I hate giving things a 10 (especially for more than one thing), but also again, it's too good for a 9. Gameplay features a delightful 8-bit rendition of 'Maple Leaf Rag' (slightly off-topic trivia: the Maple Leaf Rag is now one of my favorite songs of all time, but I never would have known it if not for playing Domino Man). Sound effects are fitting and remind me of cartoons a bit, like the graphics. The bully steps with a THUD, the bee is whacked with a whoosh (which is because you attack it by swinging a domino at it), and dominoes are set up with this noise that you c... Namco Gallery Vol.1

Namco Gallery Vol. 1 - A Good GB Import
Hi, it's 9-Volt. Just reviewing another cool game I like that isn't reviewed - Namco Gallery, Volume 1. If you've noticed, I have a passion for anything Namco Bandai (Namco makes cool games, Bandai makes Gunpla, Sunrise [a subsidiary of Bandai] animated my favorite anime, Sgt. Frog). Also, this game needs more plays, in my opinion.

I'll sum up the game for those unfamiliar: It's one volume in a collection of 12 old games by the company Namco. They're most famous for Pac-Man, which, for whatever reason, isn't included. This volume, #1, includes Battle City, Galaga, Mappy, and Namco Classic. (To those not in the know: Namco Classic is a golfing game. The title does absolutely nothing to indicate that.) All 4 of those games are available on Vizzed, although Mappy won't play because of some missing .bin files.

Graphics: 10
There are 3 ways I've played this game on Vizzed: GB emulation, Super Game Boy emulation, and SGB emulation (with border). (The Super Game Boy, if you don't know, was a lock-on cartridge for the SNES and Super Famicom that would let people play Game Boy games on their SNES/SFC. In games that supported it, it added a border around the game screen and added colorization to the graphics. Basically, kinda like the Game Boy Player.) I'll be judging each by what they add.

GB: Great graphics. Everything is scaled down perfectly for the Game Boy from the arcade (or Family Computer in the case of Namco Classic) original. They could have made it 1:1, but then that would have required excessive scrolling. That doesn't mean there's no scrolling already though - Every game requires scrolling, although in the game's defense,  Mappy, Namco Classic, and maybe even Battle City already scrolled anyway.

SGB: The added color is well-distributed and very few objects are discolored. One thing I don't like, though, is how the Mappy logo is purple-bordered, like in the Famicom version.

SGB + Border: Each part of the... Read the rest of this Review
Metro-Cross (set 1)

Metro Cross - Probably a COMPLETELY forgotten part of 80s Namco
Hey people. This is 9-Volt, reviewer of few games. I only review games I like, so expect positive stuff. I'm reviewing this game, Metro Cross, because 1) it's a Namco game 2) there are no reviews for it 3) it's unique, and 4) I seriously love this game. Also, I realized, this is the first review I've written all in one sitting - does that say anything?

Graphics: 8
These are some great graphics. Everything is recognizable, nothing is short of colors, and sprites are well-sized. They aren't the best, but I think they're really good for 1985.

Sound: 9
I LOVE THIS SOUND. Metro Cross takes music reminiscent of Mappy and sound effects that stand out all on their own and combines them into a luxurious package only deliverable by Namco. Sound effects fit with what they're assigned to - a jump is a little jumpy sound, the ready-set-go sound is a whistle, the credit noise is a happy little sound, the get-ready-for-a-stage fanfare is excited, the get-rolled-over noise is like WRAT, the get-blown-upward sound is a "whoosh" thing, the pick-up-a-thing noise is one that is nice and you won't get sick of it, the beat-a-level thing is a nice fanfare. It all fits.

Addictiveness: 10
I'm not exaggerating here, the only reason I'm playing a whole lotta other games is to see all the Pac-Man clones and all the Namco games. When I go on Vizzed I think: Metro Cross. Or Robotron: 2084. This game is addicting, inside- and outside-of-game. (Meaning, not only will I immediately nominate it as a choice when looking on Vizzed for a game to play, but I'll also start another game or two after a game over.)

Story: 4
There actually is no story, but given the guy's outfit and the backgrounds and obstacles one can easily be imagined.

Depth: 7
Various backgrounds and obstacles. Surprises at every turn. I haven't gotten far enough in the game to see all of it, but it's pretty big so far.

Difficulty: YMMV, but for me it's a 5.... Read the rest of this Review
